Wonderful day in Furnas! Nilton was an excellent guide - kind and knowledgeable. He navigated the tricky roads with ease in his very comfortable car. As a lifelong resident, he shared lots of interesting information about life on Sao Miguel. He brought us to places we would not have found on our own. He and his brother are a family business - they take pride in the business and their home and it shows! Highly recommend!

We did this tour as a shore excursion off our cruise ship. Since there were four of us and this was a private tour, we were expecting a small van or SUV. Instead, we were greeted with a small sedan. Three of us had to pile into the back seat, and one in the front. Despite the close quarters, it was very difficult to hear the guide and several times I asked him to speak louder, but then he would go back to a lower volume. It felt like he was only talking to the person in the front seat. One thing that was fun on the drive to Furnas was a spontaneous stop at a small ceramic factory. We were the only ones there and were able to meet and watch the artisans make Portuguese pottery. Along the way, we had another stop at Da Paz Chapel on a hilltop where there were amazing views. When we got to Furnas, he walked us around the hot springs in the town and took us for a coffee, then to the Terra Nostra Park. At this point we were on our own for about an hour to walk the botanical gardens and relax in the thermal pools. We recommend going to the lower pools which are smaller and hotter. Afterwards, we grabbed a quick lunch and had a scenic drive back to the ship, stopping at a couple more viewpoints.

Nilton was the perfect guide: funny, kind, knowledgeable, thoughtful and timely. Both he and his brother/business partner Thiago are life long residents of the island: there is no way we could have seen and learned as much on our own. Much better to leave the details to them and enjoy the experience instead. It was a great value as well, costing less than a car rental. We highly recommend 4Platanos Tours!

My mother and I booked this tour because we wanted to spend some time at the Dona Beija baths and it was too far for us to go ourselves. Our guide Nilton was very accommodating and took us to see 2 black sand beaches and the botanical gardens because we had asked. He also took us to a pineapple plantation where he explained the harvesting process to us. Nilton shared lots of interesting information with us and provided us with touristic suggestions. He was great! Thank you :-)

Our trip with Tiago to the thermal baths was a wonderful experience from start to finish. He drove us comfortably to Furnas, stopping along the way at points of interest. Tiago was full of information on the history of the Azores, nature, climate and more recent events. He allowed us time as we wanted and suggested a wonderful restaurant for lunch.

Wonderful tour of sao miguel with Nilton

We spent the day touring Sao Miguel with Nilton. He was absolutely wonderful. Very kind and thoughtful- a great companion for the day. He provided great insight on the island as well as good conversation( we speak English and had no trouble with understanding him) . He created an itinerary just for us based on interests and mobility( my father is older and walks with cane). Leaving from the cruise terminal, We started at a black sand beach with fort ruins, then beautiful city look out. Followed by tea plantation, the botanical gardens with thermal baths, a local deli for lunch, then caldera. We will be using this company again for repeat visits.

2023 October Perfect! Our driver was knowledgeable, patient, flexible and interested in our enjoyment. Our group of four included some less and some more able bodies. He made sure the things we experienced were within our capabilities but still interesting and meeting our needs. Surprise! 10 minutes at the gorgeous black sand beach was enough for some snaps and admiration. But we need more time to see that beautiful chapel? No problem! We had a fantastic time. Adventurous and pleasant for all of our varied needs. No contest compared to the preprogrammed tour bus Well worth the expense to have the expertise of the local guide. “You want hot springs? Well let’s not do THAT one and do this one instead since your companion is having walking difficulties today.” They sort of know how is priceless. .

The tour was perfectly tailored to our needs. Tiago went out of his way to ensute that we had a great time from pick up to drop off at our hotel. Upon pick up, Tiago asked us what the main things were that we wanted to see then gave us some history of each on the ride there. He also suggested some areas in between which was great. The thermal baths were my favourite - highly recommend!

An Amazing Day in the Azores!

What an amazing tour! . We were picked up on time at the port. Our guide was very knowledgeable of the Azores and educated us. He customized our tour and we asked him to pick top spots. We started at the beach, than reach factory, high point overlooking the lake, a stop for pastry and coffee, visited the hot springs in town and tasted the corn, thermal baths and park, then look at the lake and he dropped us off downtown by the port. His English was excellent and made our trip to the Azores very memorable. I would highly recommend this private tour. He was more than excellent and the experience was amazing.

I had such a fun and relaxing day with my private guide. He was really helpful, friendly and told all about the Furnas area. I did not only see the thermal baths but also everything else in the area. I chose to relax longer in one of them, but all of them are worth seeing even if you don’t want to get into the pools. We also had the best views from top of the mountains and even had time to eat that traditional food from the area + see the place where they cook it in the ground. We also stopped at the tea plantation. This experience deservers 5 stars for sure!
