Even though the day was rainy this tour was awesome
Our tour guide was excellent and provided humor along with his extensive knowledge
AnneGillian_M, Oct 2025
When we got the voucher from the agent the officials on the door refused us entry - telling us to go back and swap the voucher for tickets - saying it’s not difficult. Back we went and the agency employee took us passed them - they said nothing-and to the front. Only one cafe opened inside and ladies toilets had no water so no flush or ability to wash hands.. pretty grim

The collection of the tickets & audio guide was very easy. Do make sure that you have a form of ID to leave with the company. Access to the experience was straightforward although you still have to queue.
Did find the audio guide confusing. In the end just finding the place and listening to that particular description.

I booked a trip for the first Sunday of the month when I got there the person handing out the audio guides said the first Sunday of every month is free and all I really should have been charged for was 10 Euros for the audio guides. I contacted Viator and was told they had to contact the host for a refund but I have not heard back yet. Pompeii is fantastic, don’t book this trip wait till you get there and rent your own audio guide

If you’re going to Pompeii, I recommend you getting a tour guide. We signed up for the skip the line Pompeii on your own. It is a nightmare, having to go over to a different area to pick up what we thought were headset. It just turned out to be some type of old cell phones with a map. Then we tried to enter Pompeii where the person at the desk told us to enter and they said no we have to go to the first entrance. So that was down the hill we went down the hill and when we entered, we were at the end of it not the beginning of it Got very turned around and didn’t know which site was in what area. After being very confused for over an hour we saw very few things and left. Very disappointed. Do yourself a favor and pay more and get a guide.

Skip the Line was a joke! It did not happen. Arrived to find we had to walk 1km to get our ticket from a wholesaler, then line up again to have that ticket exchanged for the entry ticket, then line up again to get through the gate. Not impressed!
Jackie_C, Sep 2025
The tour was wonderful, we upgraded to have a guide instead of just audio. The problem was the instruction on where to meet was vague and caused a lot of difficulty for not only us but others that were in the tour.
Nan_M, Sep 2025
We paid about $80 on Viator for Skip
The line 10am tour with audio for 2. Upon arrival, the lines were short and turns out we could have gained entrance directly at gate for under $30 for both of us including audio. They wouldn’t take my bar code at entry gate for us to get in and “skip the line”. No workers at entry gates knew what our Viator tix were or where we should go. Zero help. I feel having the bar code should BE YOUR ENTRY TICKET. Called Viator customer service who connected me with tour operator and after identifying myself by my clothing and location, came and met me outside a train station where I then followed her up three flights of treacherous steps to get my entry tickets and be upsold by another $20 for an actual guide. Why this needs to be done voids us buying our tix in advance to skip the line. Spent about 20 minutes just trying to get this figured out. This in turn had us waiting another 30 minutes before our tour began as we had to wait for others to arrive by train. Our “English” guide was friendly but not that easy to understand. Getting started late added to more crowds and the heat. It was mid Sept but it’s very warm in Pompeii and little shade. There’s a spot to buy cold water but it’s just about at end of tour. We had to cut away early from our group as we had hired a private driver who was picking us up at noon. All in all, I think Pompeii is something you kinda have to go see out of curiosity and the historical aspect but it was a little disappointing. Let’s just say it’s not like going to the Colesium. With so much to do in this area of Italy, I’d be sure to do better planning and maybe skip this tour.

You are putting too many things together, weather, tickets, drivers, the fact that u opted for an upgrade not forced by anyone. You bought a package (ticket + audio) and we pay commission to Viator, you are not purchasing single tickets, that's why you have paid that amount. Please before booking something it is important to read what you are actually booking rather than damaging our reputation
Dee_P, Sep 2025
Ok except the ticket you buy is a voucher which you change for entry ticket at online office at Pompeii station. Didn't realise this and got turned back at entrance gate and told to go to station office. Otherwise all good
paul_k, Sep 2025
we booked the Pompei online experience with audio you cancelled it. You then offered a discount if we rebooked it, but you never deliver with the discount. You need to tell people to have their passports and their driving license. with them otherwise they have to leave it as security for the audio and there is a chance you would not be let into the exhibition. Also, you don’t skip the queue you then pick up a ticket from your office and then go into the queue anyway. A ridiculous waste of time and terribly signposted.
Response from Host, Sep 2025
1. You enjoyed a full service audio + ticket
2. It is clearly written on the voucher and on the site to bring an ID document
3. No discount was proposed, only an upgrade to a guided tour with a certified guide
4. To enter the Park it is sufficient a digital copy or pic of your ID, no need of an hard copy
5. What even is a cancellation for this tour? no sense.
Please be sure of what you are talking about before commenting and damaging our reputation

This was advertised as a skip the line experience. Nobody tells you were to go when you get there. I still had to wait in some lines. The phone they give you to follow along with was terrible. Would have preferred a head set
Susan_T, Aug 2025
We were at Pompeii as a cruise ship excursion so our time was limited, and because of that we didn’t check out the audio guide. If you have enough time, I would definitely get the audio guide.
Pompeii in August is blistering hot and crowded. Can’t say I recommend going that time of year. Thankfully we had been before.
So the upshot of this review has less to do with the vendor and more to do with visiting with limited time, horrible temps and large crowds. It’s an amazing place… just tough to visit under less than ideal circumstances.
Lisa_L, Aug 2025
Not a lot of shade, so wear a hat and bring water. Good tour, the history is pretty phenomenal, still uncovering parts of the city. I was very surprised at how big the city really was.
Jennifer_P, Aug 2025
This is an experience not to miss!! We have had a tour guide in the past. This time we opted for the audio guide which was just as good. We moved at our own pace which was definitely faster than groups. We enjoyed it more & wasn’t as exhausting as this could be. I definitely recommend the audio tour!!

A bit of a hassle — consider other options
This was my second visit to Pompeii. The first time, I bought tickets at the counter the same day with no issue. This time, anticipating large crowds during high season and the Jubilee, I opted for advance booking through a third-party provider—but it ended up being more trouble than it was worth.
You’re required to first stop at the tour office to pick up a voucher and audio guide, then walk downhill to a separate entrance to exchange your voucher for actual tickets. It’s inconvenient and time-consuming, especially in the heat, and you still end up waiting in line.
The one upside: the audio guide provided was easy to use and actually nicer than the official ones offered onsite. Still, I’d recommend either booking a guided tour or taking your chances with same-day tickets at the main entrance.

We had umbrellas and had to handle the phones work not straps or handles. I was worried the whole time the kids would drop the phone. They should really do Bluetooth headsets and straps on the phone to keep both your hands free. My gps was working but kids weren’t the maps. Handed to me were in Italian not English.

While our visit in Pompeii was great, the ticketing experience leading up to getting into the archeological park was terrible. We paid for a “skip-the-line” ticket and instead were given a voucher by the tour operator (even though the Viator voucher said that we’d be given a ticket by the tour operator), which resulted in us having to then wait in line for over 30 minutes to get our ticket to enter the park. This severely impacted our time in the park since we had only a finite amount of time to get back to our prepaid transportation.
Response from Host, Jul 2025
Dear Katherine,
we are deeply sorry to read your words.
Just to be clear, we always provide our clients physical tickets and we explain them in which entrance they must go in order to value them. Most of the time, they go to another entrance and for this reason they have to wait in the line.
we are sorry about your visit and we hope to see you again
Warm regards

Wonderful tour. So interesting and worthwhile. The guide was excited and charismatic and súper knowledgable.
Steve_b, Jul 2025
The Viator voucher has to be exchanged near the rail station for what turned out to be not a ticket but another voucher. We then had to queue a long time at a gate some way away for an actual ticket. There was no ‘skip the line’ queue. So overall not a good way to get tickets. The audioguide was on a phone which meant it had to be held to the ear unless you had your own headphones, but the GPS/map on the phone was useful. The site was superb. But I would not book this way again.
Response from Host, Jul 2025
We are deeply sorry for what happened. We always strive to do our best, and customer satisfaction is our main goal. As communicated to all customers by our colleagues at the audioguide desk, the priority entrance is located at "Porta Marina Inferiore," Pompeii's entrance at Piazza Esedra. No other entrance to Pompeii allows for any kind of priority entry.

Not complete
Train strike stopped us getting there
No refund offered
Very poor customer service given
Response from Host, Jul 2025
Dear Susan,
we are deeply sorry to read this.
Unfortunately train strike is something above our control and also the refund was not possible for the reason below:
the service you booked "Pompeii entrance tickets and audioguides" includes:
- Entrance tickets for the archaeological park which is daily and not refundable also for us. On top of that Pompei has named tickets, for this reason we cannot re-sell to other people.
- audioguides are devices that we rent from our provider, and we pay for this service.
We are sorry that we consider our customer service as poor just because we deny a refund with all the reason indicated.
Best regards
Carol_E, Jun 2025
While the park was amazing, this is not skip the line. You get a voucher at train station and still have to wait in same line as people buying tickets to get an “actual” ticket for entry. Lost over an hour of time just dealing with where to wait in line. Several others experienced the same frustration.
Karen_S, Jun 2025
In this instance , skip the line wasn’t necessary as there was no wait . Suggest a better map ( some other groups had them ) as quite difficult for us to understand . Self Audio was easy to use but maybe bring some earphone if you have them . Office to collect tickets was easy to find
Angela_E, Jun 2025
There are no signs telling you where skip the line began. I was just told to go to metal detectors and go right! The “skip the line” line was long and included tours and people with regular tickets. We were told to push our way to the front which we did and we got right in however they need better signs directions instructions and a true line dedicated to skip the line.
Annie_D, Jun 2025
100% worth it. The skip the line tickets were necessary to needed to avoid all the lines.
The tour guide really helps navigate the highlights as it’s rather a large area. I found the guide also helpful in understanding more of the history and customs that took place before the eruption.
They are still uncovering areas to this day.
ChiaHsum_H, May 2025
Skip the line service did not buy us too much time because we were in the line to get entrance tickets for 30 minutes
bctsnjwnwh, May 2025
Why you can’t do electronic tickets?!
It’s horribly uncomfortable to go to get tickets and then back to the entrance, when you’re not arriving to Pompei Scavi train station.
For people who will buy these tickets- come around 08:45, because later it will be very hot and very crowded! Tickets aren’t full!!! It’s express
Pay attention that their tickets belong to Artecard, maybe it’s cheaper and easier to use just Artecard.
Terry_H, May 2025
There is no skipping the line. One gets a voucher to stand in line to exchange for a ticket. It is very unorganized and frustrating system.
Louise_v, Apr 2025
get there earlier than your ticket time. we got there at 9 for 9.30 entry. very smooth voucher exchange. circumvesuviana train is great. audio guide good as it's on a phone
Anthony_M, Apr 2025
Terrible! Unbelievably difficult to get tickets and wait for tour which was 20 minutes late and then they decided that two of the group didn’t have proper tickets so we had to wait another 10 minutes while they straightened that out!
Rita_B, Nov 2024
Never realized that Pompeii was such a Mecca for phallic symbols. Go figure! The tour was fascinating and helped limit the distance my 94 year old mom had to walk to still take it all in. Our guide was great!!
