We had an absolute wonderful experience! Highly recommend. Every moment was filled with meaningful, interesting and fun narratives. We are so grateful to Carolina and the driver.

Overview

Go beyond Milan to discover a world of Swiss-Italian mountains and meadows from the seat of the Bernina Red Train. Known as one of the world’s most scenic train journeys, complete with ice fields and waterfalls, the Bernina Red Train is a bucket list trip, but the logistics can be tricky. This day trip makes it easy, packaging round-trip coach transport from Milan with a Bernina Red Train ticket from Tirano to glitzy St. Moritz. You even get a stop to visit the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Tirano.
  • Leave Milan early by air-conditioned coach to pack more into your day
  • Tour the pretty border town of Tirano before you board the Bernina Red Train
  • Upgrade to take a cruise on famous Lake Como before returning to Milan
  • Have free time in St. Moritz to stroll by the lake or visit the chic shops

What's Included

  • Luxury air-conditioned coach trip
  • One Way 2nd class train ticket St. Moritz - Tirano (or vv) or St. Moritz - Thusis
  • Professional Bilingual Tourist Guide (English and Spanish)
  • Headphones for the tour
  • Walking tour and free time in St. Moritz

Itinerary

Your early morning starts with pickup at the meeting point in Piazza IV Novembre, next to the entrance of the Gallia Hotel. Hop aboard your air-conditioned coach and head out for St. Moritz, a luxury alpine resort town in Switzerland’s Engadin Valley.

Along the way, stop at the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Tirano, a 16th-century basilica standing at the border between Italy and Switzerland.

Then, board the Bernina Red Train with a second-class ticket from St. Moritz to Tirano (or vice versa) or St. Moritz to Thusis. Relax while the train “climbs” up to 7,390 feet (2,253 meters)—the highest point reached by trains in Europe—through the Alps to St. Moritz on a route with UNESCO World Heritage status.

After free time in St. Moritz to stroll by the lake or visit shops, return to Piazza IV Novembre in Milan via coach bus.

If you book the Lake Como option, cruise on the famous lake before returning to Milan.

Fantastic day trip! Great photos and beautiful views of Lake Como and the Alps

Thomas_S, Feb 2026
This is a long day, but one of our Milan Olympic trip highlights. It is awesome. Very well organized. The sites and views are incredible. Probably the only time I'll ever be in the Swiss Alps so it was once in a lifetime tour. Our tour was: bus to Lake Como, boat ride on the lake, bus to St Moritz, 2.5 hours to eat and walk around, Bernina train to Tirano, bus back to Milan. Everything was beautiful. Here's a few tips to make your day the most enjoyable. 1) Try to book a restaurant reservation (or research restaurant choices) in St Moritz so you know exactly where you're going to eat. I think we got off the bus at around 1215pm. So a 1230pm or 1245pm reservation would be perfect. 2) Buy some snacks and drinks in St Moritz prior to boarding the train. We were slightly delayed on the train so we went straight from the train to the bus without an opportunity to buy anything (after the train and prior to the final bus ride). 3) Bring an external battery charger. I brought my power cord but didn't see anywhere to charge on the bus or train. You'll be taking lots of photos so you don't want to run out of battery. 4) Sit on the left side of the train, window seat if possible. You can lower the windows for great photos and the train curves over a beautiful bridge after a tunnel and the left side gets a much better view. 5) The last leg of the trip is the worst. You end the day with a 2.5 hour bus ride on mostly highways. Eat those snacks from earlier, take a nap, take off your jacket and get settled in. Have an audiobook, album, movie, etc downloaded to your phone so you can go airplane mode and save battery. Our day was 715am to 825pm. It was an awesome experience that I would highly recommend.

Choose wisely.

Breathtaking views and wonderful guide. The Bernina train was very cramped, nothing luxurious as we had expected. Barely enough time at each stop to grab a bite to eat and not really time to explore. But hey, nothing compares to the Alps!!

RAY_C, Feb 2026
It was fantastic although we had to go to the cathedral and we have skipped it and had little time in st Moritz.

Response from Host, Feb 2026

Thank you very much for sharing your feedback. We are pleased to know that you found the experience fantastic overall. At the same time, we are sorry to hear that the schedule required a visit to the cathedral and that this resulted in less time available in St. Moritz than you had hoped. We understand how important it is to fully enjoy each stop, and we truly appreciate your comments, which help us continue improving our organization and timing. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you again in the future and provide an experience that is even more aligned with your expectations. Kind regards. Letizia

Rushed, crowded and disappointing

Joanna_M, Jan 2026
I was so looking forward to this trip but it was very disappointing. My initial booking was changed due to operational issues! But really it was to cram as many people into the coach and the carriage as possible, making it crowded, hectic and uncomfortable. I had thought this was the Bernina Express with the lovely overhead windows but it was the local train where the windows can be opened meaning that the train trip was spent with people vying for more photographs than anyone really needs. No food opportunity on the train or toilets which was outlined several times on the coach to Tiriano but as I knew already I had taken a packed lunch and drink. The view of Lake Como was whizzing past on the motorway and the tour round St Moritz was speedy and not easy to herd 50 people by one guide. The guide, Sabrina, herself was personable and professional and the coach and drivers very safe and competent. It was a greedy tour because next month tours will only be allowed 25 in a group I was told. It would have been possible to do this myself by booking a train to Tirano from Milan and taking a trip on the Bernina Express to Chur but St Moritz is quite charming and then it is a 2-3 hour coach back to Milan in the dark. Also on the train our group of 50 were confined to one carriage, or upgrade for another 24 euros to FirstClass and then find out that in fact one could have been in other carriages but our tour guide said we should stay in the crowded one - so that was annoying to find out in hindsight as the rest of the train was almost empty. The scenery was lovely though and worth seeing. Nothing much in Tirano, Lake Como not great in winter even speeding by and hearing about the lovely gardens! St Moritz is classy and charming.

Response from Host, Jan 2026

Thank you for taking the time to share such detailed feedback that help us continue improving our services. We’re sorry and understand your disappointment but we’re glad, however, that you enjoyed the stunning scenery, the charm of St. Moritz, and the professionalism of your guide as well as the safety and competence of our drivers. As a guided group tour, this experience uses standard regional Red train carriages, allowing guests to open windows for photography, as stated in the tour description. Even during peak periods, we always do our best to manage the group to ensure all main highlights are included. The full-day itinerary is designed to combine Lake Como, St. Moritz, and the Bernina route safely within one day.

Horrible

Bharath_R, Jan 2026
very bad they literally stuff you into a bus and train and it's not panoramic window and families get departed because they don't assign seats. Most of the tour is sitting in a bus and stopping for bathroom! the train was only an hour

Response from Host, Jan 2026

Thank you for having shared your feedback. We’re sorry to hear that the tour did not meet your expectations. The tour acted as in the description: transportation was provided by luxury coach and comfortable standard Red train carriages. While we always do our best to keep families seated together—and this is normally achieved—assigned seating cannot be guaranteed in particular during periods of high demand. This experience is a shared group tour. The itinerary includes transfers and scheduled stops to ensure safety and comfort for all participants during a full-day experience. We understand that expectations can vary and will be taken into consideration your comments as we continue to improve overall guest experience.

The bus ride down to lake...

Kelly_A, Jan 2026
The bus ride down to lake Como is very long. Also although one of the main reasons we booked this tour was being able to open windows on the train which seemed to cause a complete panic among other people in the group although it’s stated clearly in the description of the tour. There was a bit of an argument amongst people on the train and it kinda ruined the moment a little bc I wanted to open my window but I wasn’t up to getting involved in confrontation with anyone.

Response from Host, Jan 2026

Thank you for sharing your experience, We’re sorry that some aspects of the tour affected your enjoyment. The journey to Lake Como and Bernina lasts about 13 hours, as mentioned in the description, and it is part of the scenic experience. Regarding the train's windows, we confirm that participants are allowed to open them, as clearly stated before booking. We’re sorry that you didn’t feel comfortable opening them as you wished. Unfortunately, in group tours, personal preferences can sometimes differ, but our staff is always available to help manage such situations on the spot. We truly appreciate your feedback, which helps us improve communication and group management, and we hope to welcome you again in the future.

Fantastic day trip from Milan. Scenery is spectacular. Our guide today Franco was friendly, helpful and very knowledgeable. Ten out of ten 👍🏻

Breathtaking - Must do!

Mary_M, Jan 2026
Honestly, the train ride was beyond words absolutely breathtaking and a must-do experience. It was a bit disappointing not being able to spend more time in Switzerland, as it’s truly stunning. The only minor downside was not being allowed to eat or drink on the bus during the 1.5-hour journey each way. Aside from that, this day trip is an absolute must!

Liars in descriptions and thieves for refunds

LorenzoFatto_O, Jan 2026
Boked a trip Lake Como & Bernina Train, got downgraded at less than 48hrs from the trip to a roundtrip on the train and no cruise, and that trip was not even respected. When contacted by the tour operator, I got offered a partial refund of 80€ (only 79,53€ arrived…) and a change to this other trip. It would have been impossible to change the dates or accept any other option, since our schedule was tight and it was a present. So, reluctantly, we accepted, and in the end paid more than average for a trip that, just with a one way ticket on the train, costs way less, without even talking about the upsetness that it created… the day of the trip, we shared our concerns with the tour operator, that just stopped answering. After the trip, we contacted viator, that after a few days simply reported to us the unwillingness for a refund, partial, of the trip by the tour operator. Quite useless. First and last time on this website, where the tour operators can write in description whatever they want, do not maintain it, and keep money for a service that was not given.

Response from Host, Jan 2026

Thank you for your comments. We are truly sorry for what happened and we renew our apologies, as already expressed in our previous messages to you. We would, however, like to clarify a few important points. We proposed an alternative option to you, which was clearly explained and accepted. You chose to proceed with the tour without the cruise, with a partial refund, which was duly processed and issued. Therefore, we acted in accordance with what was communicated and agreed upon. We also acted in accordance with the tour description published on the website. The itinerary does not include a round-trip train journey, but a one-way train journey, as specified in the tour details. The day went as planned, and we received positive feedback from other participants. We regret that you remain dissatisfied with the outcome. We were, and still are, available for a phone call to clarify any further doubts or concerns. Kind regards, Serena

Happy but not satisfied

James_Z, Oct 2025
First off let me say, the day spent in Lake Como, The Red Bernina train ride through the Italian and Swiss Alps and St Moritz was absolutely spectacular and deserves 5 stars. However with that being said, The first part of the coach ride was the confusion amongst the travelers because they’re were not enough seats and couples traveling together had to sit in separate seats. (That also happened on the Bernina Express were couple had to sit without they’re partners, I was one of them). The air conditioned luxury coach ride to lake Cuomo and Triani was anything but air conditioned, multiple times passengers had to keep asking the driver and tour guide to turn on the air conditioning because it was hot and stuffy and last but not least, The Tour guide Makela was horrific, she did not speak English very well (I don’t fault her for that) and I had to ask her multiple times to repeat herself and then she would get loud and obnoxious and that included the Bernina Express when I was unhappy that I had to sit without my wife. I would not use Viator for this excursion, but there are plenty of other tour guides to use if going to Lake Cuomo and Red Bernina express. It’s worth the trip to both places.

Response from Host, Nov 2025

Thank you very much for sharing your detailed feedback. We’re truly glad to hear that you enjoyed the beauty of Lake Como, the Bernina Express, and St. Moritz — these experiences are indeed spectacular. We’re very sorry, however, for the inconveniences you encountered during the tour. Seating issues, insufficient air conditioning, and communication difficulties with the guide are not the standards we aim to provide. Your comments are extremely valuable, and we have addressed each point with our team. We appreciate the time you took to help us improve. Thank you again, and we hope that despite these issues, you carry wonderful memories of the destinations themselves.

Worth the money

Whilst it was a long day it was co-ordinated very well and moving from one place to another was smooth and effortless.

Red train review

Brad_M, Sep 2025
Great picturesque views. St Moritz is lovely. 10 hours on a bus and train pure torture Zero stops on return trip

Best train ride ever amazing views

Jeff_D, Sep 2025
Bus ride was long but fairly comfortable, the boat tour was fun but the train ride was amazing! The scenery was the most exquisite I've ever had the joy of seeing. Lina was a great tour guide and our bus drivers were great, they got us through some very sketchy spots where the roads are narrow and the turns were very sharp! Twisty roads were super cool and how they are able to get the buses through is surprising.

The Big Red Train of The Swiss Alps

Marisa_G, Sep 2025
Its a great tour. Hajo was awesome. We had a wonder time with sun, rain, snow and sun im St Moritz. The church in Tirano was beautiful. However the return can make you motion sick with the hairpin curves. I would prefer the return on train up to Tirano then the bus.

Great Day Trip

Tanya_O, Aug 2025
Lina was wonderful, the bus was very comfy, we enjoyed the boat ride on lake como and the private coach on the Bernina Express. I cannot recommend this trip enough. Made travel from Milan so easy.

Great trip

Great trip. Ticked multiple boxes in one day. Some may say rushed, but I would say efficient. Well done team. No food or drink allowed to be consumed on the bus. Better to know in advance. Many frantically drank their cups before boarding.

Truly a wonderful experience exploring the beauty of Switzerland. The scenery during the Bernina Train ride was absolutely breathtaking—like stepping into a postcard. We traveled as a family with two young children and felt completely at ease throughout the trip. Everything was well-organized and smooth. Special thanks to our amazing tour guide, Lina, and our skilled driver, Giuseppe, for making the journey even more memorable!
