He was very safety conscious, made sure the group stayed together, and that we watched out for low hanging branches, and slippery steps. We took three different hikes with Dinarte during our week in Madeira. On each hike Dinarte provided exceptional guide services. He is extremely knowledgeable about the ecosystems and plant and bird life of the area. He was very safety conscious, made sure the group stayed together, and that we watched out for low hanging branches, and slippery steps. We wanted to do a Levada walk or two, but knew it would be better to do them with a guide due to the new rules which requires you to pay all costs should you have an accident.
So having the chance to do one with a local was perfect for us as we knew we would be in safe hands. Plus of course you don't have to do the driving!
There was only one other person on our trip, the 25 fountains hike, it made it nicer as we were truly a small group (just us four) so it kept it personal.
Dino was clever in the route he took us. For the first hour or so we hardly met another person. Of course the 25 fountains area itself was always going to be busy, but Dino tries to pick the least busy day.
Dino clearly loves the island of his birth, it shines through during the day as you progress.
What is so good is that Dino looks after the slowest in the group (which was me in this case!) but could go a lot faster with the right group as he competes in trail running the world over. Whatever your needs, Dino is your man.
Things you will need to take:
A jacket, in case it rains.
Good Goretex hiking shoes or boots. (You could do with trainers but the 25 fountains hike includes a tunnel that can have some puddles several inches deep and hard to avoid.)
Water
A snack (bananas are a good idea, or perhaps a protein bar or two).
A camera!

Dino was an exceptional guide! I did two hikes with him— the 25 Fountains and Caldeirão Verde — and on both, we started the walks along quieter paths instead of the usual crowded routes. This made the experience so much more peaceful, with the sounds of birds and the feeling of being fully immersed in nature.
Dino is kind, passionate, and deeply knowledgeable about the island’s fauna, flora, and history. You can truly feel how much he loves his island, and that enthusiasm is contagious.
I thoroughly enjoyed my hikes with him. If you’re planning to explore Madeira, book a hike with Dino — you won’t regret it!

We are both 71 and the slope down to the largest tree was quite slippy due to the dew overnight. My husband wore trainers - would have been better with proper walking boots. The guide provided a walking stick which helped a lot.

We went on two walks with Dino and had an amazing time . The walks were varied and Dino is very knowledgeable and friendly and imparts lots of interesting facts around the history and Madeira’s natural world , with a calm lovely manner .

I went on 2 walks with Dino, as a solo female traveller.
The first was Caldeirao Verde where it ended up being a private tour. Dino picked me up from the hotel (and kept me informed when he was running a bit late due to traffic) and was very easy to talk to. As it was just me on the tour he gave me the option of a harder but quieter route walking up to the levada from further down rather than the flatter route along the entire levada. This was perfect for me and I really enjoyed the walk but probably wouldn't suit those without a reasonable level of fitness. Dino shared a lot of interesting information about the island and various plants and birds we encountered.
The second walk was the Larano coastal path which I did as a shared tour with three other people. Dino was great at ensuring that we all stayed together and that we walked at a pace which was comfortable for everyone.
Both walks were stunning and although you could probably do them without a guide, you wouldn't get the information and knowledge that Dino shared and being picked up from the hotel also takes the hassle out of having to travel to the starting point of the walk. Dino also keeps up to date with which trails are safe and passable which is particularly reassuring as a solo traveller.
I will hopefully be returning to Madeira next year and I will absolutely be attending more walks with Dino. Thank you!

Dino is a fantastic guide. He is very informative and he pointed out rare plants and birds that I found interesting. The Ponta de Sao Laurenco is a great hike when you are levada'd out. Book Dino, you will be very pleased

This was one of my favorite days in Madeira! Our guide, Dino picked us up at our hotel and we went immediately to the starting point for our walk to the 25 Fonts. Dino was very knowledgeable and personable. He brought flashlights for the tunnel, which I wouldn't have thought of. It was a beautiful hike and mostly level to the first waterfall. There were a few long sets of steps going to the second waterfall, but I went slow and took a break or two. Dino followed our lead and stopped whenever we needed to. It was great fun! Start out pretty early, because it does get busy. I was a little worried that I wouldn't be able to make it all the way to the second waterfall, but I did. We are both middle 60's with no issues, but we were both tired at the end. If you have any mobility or knee issues, I'm not sure this would be a good hike.

Had a wonderful time walking with Dino up to the Fanal forest and then back down following the path of a Levada. Dino was very knowledgeable about the flora and fauna in the area and took time to talk with all of the people in the small group. I would highly recommend this walk and Dino as a guide

Second time in Madeira. Second time that we have booked Dino. As usual - both of them are divine.
He is only working with small groups, or you can have him for yourself if you pay an extra fee (recommended) We went as a private group and walked up to Fanal and back along the Levada do Cedros and it was truly a remarkable journey.
Dino is well educated and very friendly (without being too much). He is always taking very good care of us, asking if we need a small break when we look a bit tired.
We SO recommend him! GO! GO! GO!
(He also have running groups, if you are a big fan of trail running)

The hiking and scenery in Madeira is spectacular. Dino shared some wonderful locations. He has so much depth of knowledge and interest in his home of Madeira and it is obvious that he brings it all to being a great guide. He showed excellent driving skills, as each hike we took was about 45 mins from Funchal. Most importantly, Dino wants to be sure that those he is hosting are having a wonderful experience.

We had a wonderful hiking experience through a tunnel into the ancient Laurassilva forest. We were introduced to the unique trees and flowers and enjoyed the Mountain views on the way to the 25 fountains and waterfalls. The guide paced us perfectly and away from the larger tourist groups giving us a truly private hike. We did not feel rushed and he stopped to conclude our experience for coffee and a sandwich at the end of our day. We highly recommend for a Madeira hiking experience!

This is a challenging walk. You need to be sure footed as well as reasonably fit. Dino was very patient with us. He had tried to warn us that it was steep in places but it’s difficult to describe the terrain to understand that the descent in particular is difficult. A lovely day out though.

Great hike to the levada do Rei, our guide Dinarte gave many explanations about the local flora and fauna. The walk along the levada was very pleasant, without difficulty, and without too many people. We arrive at a river in the middle of abundant vegetation it is very beautiful 👍
