Awesome experience from pickup at our hotel until our drop off at the same. Renee David (our guide) was friendly, cheerful and especially knowledgeable. He took good care of the entire group (only 8 people were in our tour, which is much smaller than many of the other groups we saw that day). The walk-through the bridges was a wonderful mystical experience. Renée spotted so many animals that we would absolutely have missed if we had chosen to do this unguided. I can’t stress that enough. Unless you are familiar with where to look in these rainforests, you will not see much. Give up the idea of just entering the park and winging it. I highly recommend this tour and company but regardless, go with a guide.
The waterfall was also a wonderful experience, but be aware it’s 500 steps down and 500 steps up. We are in our 60s and it wasn’t a problem, but you should be aware of it.
Lunch was plentiful and tasty.
The people with us were also great, but I suppose that’s just due a chance. We were very lucky to get a great group.

It’s a full day. You see all the best stuff near La Fortuna. You could do the same stuff without a guide. But you WILL be missing out. The guide (on all the tours I’ve done in Costa Rica) are absolutely worth their weight in gold in finding animals. It’s actually incredible. The same goes for the tour guides at this company.

Wow, our tour was absolutely wonderful! Probably the best tour I’ve ever done! We did the full day between the bridges, volcano, waterfall and springs and our tour guide David, his partner and bus driver (sorry I don’t have their names) were exceptional! They helped get tons of photos, and there is no way that we could have gotten to do all of these things on our own. This tour was definitely a great value and a great way to see La Fortuna. Awesome!! Highly recommend!!

Absolutely loved every minute. Our tour guide Carlos was amazing and patient with us all and passionate about making sure got to see wildlife! 10 out of 10 would recommend!

Highly recommend the hanging bridges, waterfall, Arenal volcano, and hot springs all day tour! We had a large group of 18 people traveling together, ages 40s to 10. Guides Rasta and Melanie and driver Baldomore were awesome! Very knowledgeable of the history and animals! We saw a sloth, monkeys, frogs, snakes, and so many birds! Jam packed day but we never felt rushed. If you are wanting to see the key sites in La Fortuna, this is a great tour to take!!

All the experience is 100% recommend, the guides were super fun and knowledgeable of the wildlife around the waterfalls, bridges and Volcano, it’s a most to do

This tour was great! Our guide was amazing and very knowledgeable about the plants and wildlife. It was a full day with lots of stops which was perfect for us. We had sufficient time at each stop and loved that we were able to experience so much in one day! The hanging bridges were our favorite!
Rory_C, Jul 2024
Our guide (Jacob) has a passion for what he does. He got so excited for each of us to see the wildlife he spotted.
You don’t need a guide to do the hanging bridges- but we felt this was the best way to go for sure after our experience. We would have missed spotting ALL the wildlife.
Jacob said it doesn’t always happen this way- but he spotted a sloth, an eyelash pit viper (which is TINY), many monkeys, a tree frog, some red poison frogs, spiders, birds GREAT guide.
He was mindful of the needs of all participants.
This is the perfect excursion for people who want to explore many spots in one day.
It is not for hardcore adventure junkies. But for most of us- it is awesome and the perfect amount of adventure.
I would say my children (11 and under) would not have lasted the day. It is exhausting. But not too strenuous. Some of the hiking is very steep but not dangerous. Just exhausting.
Hot springs were meh. I could have done without them. Basically a waterpark. But lunch was so good- authentic.
I would do this all over again!

We had a great time on this full day excursion! After a short mix up with pick ups and timings the travel company went above and beyond to make sure we caught up with the group at the first location. Chino our guide was great he pointed out lots of wildlife whilst walking the Hanging Bridges and around the Arenal Volcano. Swimming under the waterfall was fun although the fast currents made it a little challenging. The drink in the spa at the end was the perfect way to rest tired legs after a lot of walking.

This was so fun! It was a full day of exploring La Fortuna. Our guide Christian was so nice and knowledgeable. I would 100% do this tour again. I highly recommend.
We were able to enjoy the day without worrying about a single detail. They had a great team.

Do not book this tour if you are looking to be active and ACTUALLY hike. This excursion was a huge disappointment. My boyfriend and I ended up leaving early because we were so disappointed. I also preface this with, I have done a lot of traveling and a lot of excursions in many countries. The description stated that we would spend our day on a "private hiking adventure" and would experience an "extreme hike through Arenal Volcano National Park." Both were a lie. First, despite the description also stating that round-trip hotel transportation was included, it was not. Our hotel, despite being one that was available in the drop-down selection, was not one that the company would pick up from. We were forced to provide our own transportation to the Red Lava Office. So I would recommend calling before booking. Next, we were told to arrive at 7. Despite arriving at 7, the bus to pick up other passengers did not even leave the Red Lava Office until nearly 7:30. The bus did not return to pick us up and go to the hanging bridges until nearly 8. That brings me to the second issue: this was not a private tour. We were sardined in the bus with nearly 30 other passengers. One girl on the bus did not have a seat and had to use a folding aisle seat that she had to struggle to fold up and remove at each stop. Once we got to the hanging bridges, we were separated into two groups of about 15. Many of the individuals in our group were elderly and moved extremely slow. My boyfriend and I were forced to constantly wait on other members of our group. This was the entire reason that we wanted to book a private tour. We are both extremely active and were looking forward to exploring the Arenal forest at our own pace. The path was paved the entire time....so much for extreme hike. Next, we stopped at the Arenal forest. We had a pineapple snack while our guide took a break to watch the soccer game. All of the group was a little annoyed that our guide was wasting our time. Next, we went on a very short "hike" in the lava fields. It was less than 900 meters and the 70-year-old couple was able to make the "climb." There was nothing "extreme" about this hike, after that, the bus was who knows where so we walked around on ROAD looking for wildlife. At this point, my boyfriend and I were so annoyed at the blatant false description of this excursion. After having lunch, we headed to the waterfall. This was the best part of the trip, but we left early and ended up not doing the hot springs because everything took twice as long as it was supposed to and it was such a disappointment. The most physically demanding part of the whole excursion was the stairs down to the waterfall. I would not recommend it if you actually want to hike. The excursion is completely overpriced for it not being an actual private tour. I would recommend just buying these passes to the parks yourself and then going at your own pace. I will not be booking through Red Lava Tours ever again.

Your hotel is outside of the pick up zone. We explained to you why it appears on the drop down menu and why this is incorrect (viator uses maps for this and the hotel owner put the hotel on maps where it isn't to make it appear closer).
The group was 20 people with two guides. The bus is a 30 seater so it wasn't full. The girl sitting in the drop down seat had long legs and wanted more space.
We do not promote this tour as an extreme hike. There is quite a bit of hiking involved but it isn't extreme. Difficulty degrees are very relative, what is easy for one person is hard for the next.
This isn't offered as a private tour. We offer group tours.
The rest appeared slow because you went on your own super fast pace (our guide reported this to us during the tour). The waiting was caused by this.
You felt like you had to wait on the guide because you didn't want to eat pineapple and wanted to leave asap while others where still eating. We don't rush people. Gearing down a bit may help for your enjoyment of a nature activity. The guides may have watched footbal during this brake.
You did the whole tour and then asked for a full refund. Like eating 90% of a plate leaving some greens and than sending it back and saying you don't want to pay for it.
I am sorry that you didn't like it but I do think you should pay more attention to descriptions before buying something. Yo can avoid unpleasent surprises for yourself and for the people doing their job by being better informed.

This was an amazing family experience. The highlight of our trip. This is a very well run trip and at every stop we felt like we got to spend enough time to really enjoy it. Our guide Chris was amazing!! We saw tons of wildlife including monkey, sloths, pit viper and all kids of birds. If we come back we will be sure to find a way to have him be our guide again. I would come back to CR just to do this exact trip again. Our kids loved it despite it being a full day with lots of activity. It's great that the hiking is in the am and then you get to relax later in the day.

Guides were very passionate about their work, helpful and professional. Everything went smoothly, lunch wait was longer than needed (but that could have been on the restaurant). The volcano hike was a bit underwhelming as you just walk up some lava rock to a picture spot and then walk back down. The waterfall and hot springs part of the day were amazing and worth every penny!

Every part of this tour was amazing, highly recommend it. It makes a very busy day, but it was so worth it. We did the hanging bridges first, then the Arenal Volcano, by then we were starving and the lunch was delicious. We also purchased a tasty cake for desert to share. The second part of the day was the waterfalls, walk down a long way, but the view and experience is once in a lifetime. Then we climbed all the way up that was some workout. The last part was the thermal natural pools that felt soooo good after the long day.
Our guide were Julian (Chino), Cathleen, and Christian (not sure of the spelling), all of them were extremely helpful and knowledgeable. We do birding and natural walks, but we never would have spotted the birds that the guides did because of their knowledge. One more important things is the care that these guys had for their nature - Chino picked up every little trash piece he saw while we walked in the parks. Thank you for the work you do guys!

Great time! It did rain the entire day but we made the best of it. Couldn’t see the volcano but had fun all day!
Trystan_H, Mar 2024
For those on a limited time frame this tour takes in all 4 major sights around La Fortuna in 1 day. We ended at the Termalitas Hot Springs which were nice with several different temperature pools. You feel you have enough time at each place to enjoy.
Sophia_M, Mar 2024
Full day's worth of adventure. There were multiple hanging bridges and we stopped to see animals here and there. We hiked up a bit to see a view of the Arenal Volcano. Fortuna waterfall is ~500 steps down. The water is cold and be warned, the water current is strong so this isn't recommended for weak swimmers. Rocks are slippery due to algae/moss, so water shoes may offer some grip. It was great to end the day at the hot springs. Didn't get to see any sloths but was a great value overall.
ANA_B, Feb 2024
The guides were knowledgeable and entertaining, always considerate of everyone’s needs and answered questions, the day was full of adventure and fun !

What an amazing experience! Carlos, Julian and Jose were great. Highly recommend! Great guides. Great tour. Can’t wait to do it again. Hanging bridges and waterfall were highlights. Hot springs nice way to end the day. Costa Rica Rum. Hot springs. Camaraderie with everyone on the trip. Memories I’ll never forget!

Coming to Costa Rica was an amazing experience but this excursion was outstanding! Th staff and customer service left me speechless. Im definitely coming back!

We had a great day with Chris. There were some fun short hikes, lots of swimming, good food, nice company and we saw several sloths and other beautiful animals. Would recommend it 100%.
Aaron_T, Jan 2024
The tour guides were very knowledgeable and friendly making the experience fun. A jam packed day so be ready.

Julian was such a great tour guide. The guide through the rainforest/hanging bridges was one of my favorite things - saw plenty of natural wildlife including an anteater which I’ve never seen. Very informative guide. The volcano hike was pretty easy and we were lucky to get a gorgeous view. The steps back up from La Fortuna were difficult which is why they recommend being active prior. It’s doable for your average person though! Also, it was gorgeous and the springs were super relaxing. Highly recommend.
Rachel_M, Dec 2023
Tour was perfect for me and my 9 year old son! Waterfall and hot springs were the highlights. Guides are informative and wonderful/. Recommend!
Meera_D, Dec 2023
Horrible experience! Driver purposely delayed and left no time at the end for waterfall or hot springs. We were told we would be back at 5 and it took all day and we’re not back until 7:30 and wasted time looking at ants before hanging bridges. False and misleading. Half of our group left the tour half way through and took taxi back to hotel
Response from Host, Dec 2023
Its was the busiest day the year. There were lines at the hanging bridges. Our guides tried their best to find something to occupying the group with while they had to wait. If you want to avoid this the Christmas holiday is not the time to come here. Its widely known to be busy. Most people realized and accepted this.
Mona_B, Dec 2023
Worse guide, very dissaponting experience with this trip! Disappointing 😞! I do not recommend spending the $$ on this trip with this company because of the guides we had. Good luck all the best to everyone!
Katie_L, Dec 2023
We had a wonderful day on this tour. When it says "full," it's telling the truth. We started out at Mistico for a lovely tour with Chino (his given name is Yulian but he goes by Chino), who spotted all kinds of animals and birds we would have never seen on our own. From there to the falls where we had time to swim, then a yummy lunch in a local soda, followed by amazing hot springs, which was the perfect way to round it all out. The rest of the group was great, as well as the crew: Jose, Olivia and Kaitlyn (I hope I am getting the names correct, it was difficult to hear on the bus sometimes). Would absolutely recommend.
Yolanda_C, Nov 2023
After hours of driving through unpaved mountain roads from Liberia to La Fortuna, we decide to give ourselves a break by taking a tour and letting someone else drive. In Costa Rica, everywhere you visit require an entrance fee. This tour covers entrance fees to bio reserve, water fall, volcano park and hot springs. Lunch is delicious. Our guide Julian is wonderful: he is knowledgable and patient. Our group consists of fellow Americans from different parts of the U.S. It is also nice to exchange travel experience while riding the shuttle and during lunch.
Camelia_M, Oct 2023
Amazing time! Our guide was super fun and was super knowledgeable about every single thing on the hikes. We saw monkeys, sloths, toucans and so much more! We did get stuck in a downpour, but it made the adventure even more fun. You should definitely do this! Lots of uphill hiking and stairs, get ready for a booty burn!
