Kayaking is a great way to explore, and this area has both islands, tidal beaches and mangroves. We have good sit-inside touring kayaks with rudders, which are rare in Costa Rica. We rent the kayaks for self-supported tours to experienced kayakers. This is quite unique in Costa Rica as most kayak adventures are group tours with guides. We rent the kayaks for a day or multiple days for those that would like to great adventure with camping along the way - or sleep in cabins along the coast. We have 15 years of experience kayaking these waters, and have a huge selection of routes, places to explore and recommendations for where to camp or cabins close to the water. The Gulf of Nicoya is an amazing place to kayak. Mostly it is sheltered from the wind, has near-shore islands within an easy paddle, and a varied bird, fish and animal life. There are only a few places in the world where bioluminescence can be seen year round. And luckily for travelers to the Nicoya Peninsula there is one such place here. Bioluminescence is a light created by living organisms through a chemical reaction, biological light. In the gulf it is the algae that create this magical effect. Upon being disturbed, the algae give off a burst of light. Since there are millions of them it looks like sparkles in the water. The wavelengths are in the blue to green area and depending on the amount of algae it will appear as bluish or greenish sparkles. One of the best ways to see this phenomenon is to get a look from above, and kayaking is a great way to see it well. The algae will stick to your paddle, your hand or floating debris glowing for many seconds if you encounter a strong patch. When you kayak over shallow areas, fish will be scared up and it looks like fireworks under water as they take off, leaving a trail of “fairy dust” in their wake.

Very kid friendly. You get to swim with the bioluminescence/phytoplankton so make sure you wear a swim suit and bring dry cool others/towel. The kids loved it! (We have a 4 y/o and 8 y/o) You get to tour the small islands as well and see the birds. We actually saved a bird from the water that couldn’t swim.

Eddy was awesome and the bioluminescence was amazing. We opted to switch to a boat ride instead of the kayaks (he had both). While the kayaks would have been quite, we had a better time on the boats because we could cover more distance. Eddy gave us a great time. He spoke great English and explain some of the science behind. Had a great time and highly recommend. Also, get there a few minutes early for a beautiful sunset.

Family friendly tour!

We had to reschedule our tour to the next day and they were very accommodating and understanding. It’s a family run business which is great, the family who greeted us was very friendly and inviting. The tour is about 6 hours, the first hour was a boat tour exploring monkey island and seeing spider monkey from the boat, also trying to spot turtles and other marine wildlife along with some history and fun facts on surrounding nature and rock formations. After we had up to an hour to snorkel by this big rock where we saw lots of beautiful fish. (it’s about a 20 min boat ride to where you snorkel close to the island) The last part was on tortuga island over two hours. (Free time) They provide a dedicated area with shade to eat provided lunch and plenty refreshments. We got to Choose between chicken/fish/ veggie option for lunch (day before). The island has a souvenir shop, banana boats and umbrella chairs, and also buy different kinds of drinks from Local vendors (for rent 4,000c each person on banana boat or umbrella chair from local vendor). Our tour with Bahia Rica also provided fruits, some brownies and cookies. I love that our tour had an area so you don’t need to worry about extra costs renting any seating. If you want to use the restroom on the island it’s $600 colones each time( pay for this at the gift shop). Overall I would recommend this tour. We were a family of 4 with two kids ages 9 and 14. Total passengers on boat including staff was 12. Bring plenty sunscreen and bug spray.

Pure Magic

This was nothing short of magical, and one of the highlights of our trip to Costa Rica. Our guide was very knowledgeable and personable. The spray of diamonds in the water anytime anything moved - it was like Disney animation come to life. And if that weren't enough, the billions of stars above in this rural area of CR was a show in and of itself. Our guide also pointed out many different stars and planets and constellations, too. Absolutely wonderful experience. 100% recommended. Do yourself a favor and make this part of your Costa Rican experience.

Pura Vida Snorkeling and Beach

Communication before the trip was excellent. We met on the beach by El Gecko’s meeting point. Directions were accurate. Then we took a very enjoyable, scenic boat ride to the snorkeling location. Snorkeling was very nice. plenty of fish to make the 45 minute experience worth it. There were only 7 of use and it was quite lovely to be in such a small group. Maybe 30 minutes after we had arrived a very large group of snorkelers (maybe 20 or 30) descended upon us and I was glad we at least had 30 minutes to ourselves. After, the guides took us to an isolated, quiet beach and served us delicious fruit. But wait - that wasn’t all. I totally did t expect the lunch that came 1 hour later. Which came with home-made salsa that was truly yummy! We had the beach to ourselves for about 3 hours and besides getting in another swim we saw reptiles, monkeys and deer. It was the perfect, Puta Vida day.

Bioluminescence sparkled like diamonds

This is a night tour and the darker the night, the better it is for seeing the bioluminescence. That means it will probably be hard to see your guide and the other kayaks if you don't pay attention and stick close to your guide. Our guide was fantastic about helping us see the bioluminescence and telling us about it. He made it a magical experience and it's the most fun my husband and I have had playing in water since we were little kids! The bioluminescence sparkled like diamonds or stars. Totally worth the price and would do it again and again! I used this tour as research for a potential Fitness Retreat as the owner of my own private personal training studio in the U.S. We found it to be a good upper body workout while not feeling like exercise because you were so focused on experiencing the magic of the bioluminescence.
