Itinerary
After pickup in La Fortuna, you’ll head straight to La Fortuna Waterfall in the tour vehicle. Take advantage of the day’s relaxed pace to swim and enjoy the falls, or just enjoy views of the impressive cascade from the edge of the water.
Next, head to Arenal Volcano, a renowned destination for wildlife. Hiking alongside a guide knowledgeable about local plants and animals means you’re more likely to see wildlife like sloths, tropical birds, and frogs — it takes a trained eye to spot the well-camouflaged animals amid lush foliage.
The final stop of the day is Mirador el Silencio, where a hiking trail leads to spectacular views of Arenal Volcano; not only is it a gorgeous walk, but you’ll have time to snap classic photos including the mountain’s dramatic profile. End your tour where you started, either at the company office or your La Fortuna accommodations.

My family (two girls, aged 9 and 6) did this tour and we had A GREAT time! Our tour guide was Rasta and he was very attentive to our girls (we had a very young crowd and we would be last in the hike). Rasta and the crew were very knowledgeable and answered any and all questions we had. We we're completely soaked on the volcano hike, but the view and presentation were well with it. Plus, it added a big part to our kids memory bank. We ended the tour at one of the best hot springs in La Fortuna. From the beginning until the end it was simply amazing. Would do again hands down.

Where do I start! I didn’t see enough great things about this experience. Everything about it was amazing!!! Our guides Uriel and Melonie were attentive to everyone’s needs and very knowledgeable! Be prepared to climb lots and lots of stairs but the end game is worth every single step! One of the best trips, highly recommend wearing very comfortable clothes and hiking shoes (and bring a rain poncho). So glad we did this one with our 2 boys. A must!!!!

This was a long day but a great day. We loved the hiking portions. The tour team also threw in some unexpected experiences, like the butterfly sanctuary. It was nice to see, but could have done without to cut down on time. Overall, tour guides and bus/travel was amazing. If you’re looking for all day guided hikes then this is the right activity for you.

It was our first time ever going hiking & it was a great experience. I would definitely recommend it.

Our guides were incredible and it was great to have one experience in La Fortuna that showed us so much. The food we had in between tours was one of the best we had all trip. Our favorite part was the volcano hike... be aware of the steps going down to the waterfall : )

Genuinely amazing. No words. Emanuel was perfect. He knew what felt like everything. He could spot animals and plants that seemed so hidden. We saw, heard, touched, and experienced nature in a way none of us had before. Everytime we ended one portion, we were so surprised by the time. It just felt like we had forever to explore everything. We learned about the history of La Fortuna, ate delicious food and fruit. We ran through rain, hiked through heat, and would do it all over if we could. For SURE worth every penny! And please don't forget to tip!

It was a rainy day in La Fortuna but we had a great experience on this tour. We saw a lot of wildlife and the guides were great!

Such an amazing experience!! You really get your money’s worth. Our tour guide was named Emmanuel and he was incredible!!!

This is no fault of the company but we happened to go when there were horrible downpours and flooding. Half of the tour was cancelled. The water level rose quickly and was a bit scary. Unfortunately, we had to wait an hour on the bus to even get off of the road from the waterfall. After that, the hike around the volcano was cancelled. We were able to still go to the hot spring which was surprisingly nicer then I thought it would be. I am sure on a different day or time of the year it would be an amazing trip. Our day just wasn’t what we were expecting.

Unfortunately the weather did not cooperate, however our guide was excellent and went above and beyond the entire day

Excellent experience, our guide Charlie’s was great guide very knowledgeable and kind .he helped me by carry my heavy backpack while coming up from water falls .Worth every penny

The experience was amazing. I would recommend driving yourself to the meet up point which is the Hot Springs resort because at the end, you end up getting access to the hot springs and you can stay longer when the group leaves to drop everyone else off at their hotels. We started off going down to the La Fortuna waterfall then had some fresh pineapple, lunch, then hiked the highest view point to see the Arenal Volcano. Do note that if it’s super cloudy or foggy or rainy, you won’t be able to see the volcano. We had Diego and Erro (I believe that was his name) and they spoke both english and Spanish very well and were great tour guides!

Definitely one of the highlights of my trip to Costa Rica! Everything on this trip was stunning, with incredible scenery throughout the day. Our guides were very friendly, enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Everything was well organised from start to finish, and the whole day offered great value for money. I would highly recommend this tour!

Highly recommend. Bring a refillable water bottle. Medium to high activity level if you don’t regularly walk uphill.

This tour was absolutely amazing ! Be prepared to hit about 9k steps, be amazed by nature, enjoy company and, if you're lucky, Franklin will be your guide. I can't give this experience enough stars. Just do it. You won't be disappointed.

This day was jam packed w new adventures!! As a parent trying to pack in something for everyone & not have to make a ton of decisions this 3-in-1 deal was perfect!! Hosts Uriel & Errol was super communicative beforehand & knowledgeable, kind & relatable throughout the day. From morning through lunch & into the evening the pair were truly wonderful. They even made sure the stopped to pick up my son’s hat that bounced off his head from the truck & kept it safe till we finished our waterfall tour. We had 3 adults & kids (10-12) in our party & it was an ideal day… that said we’re were all a bit caught off guard on how strenuous the climbs were. We made it through & it was all TOTALLY worth it, but all the adults are nervous about how we’ll feel in the AM… and I definitely would not recommend for kids under 10… as a parent it’s a little scary trying to make sure the complete the climbs w/o slips/falls.

Great guides, everything was great. Waterfall swim followed by lunch, volcano hike, and relaxing hot springs!

This was the most physically challenging tour I've ever done in my life. The guides were very encouraging and knowledgeable of our stops, you can also tell they take great pride in their nature and agriculture. We did the waterfall hike first and fair warning, its 530 steps going down and you have to go up those same 530 steps to go back up. The volcano hike was next, wasn't as bad because the steps weren't as steep, but it rained on the way down so I still had to be careful. And then elevation changes also messes with your breathing a bit so be prepared. We also stopped at an indigenous spot and got a little lesson on cacao. The hot springs being at the end of the tour must have been strategic because my muscles were in desperate need of some relaxation from the hike by then. They gave us an option to just stay if we wanted to relax, and I def took them up on the offer. I would book this company again but I personally would not do 2 hikes in 1 tour.

We had a great time, very knowledgeable tour guides, learned a lot from them. Christian and Diego were both great the entire time.

This tour was absolutely amazing! The waterfall hike was excellent and you were not rushed to get pictures or explore a little on your own. Carlos and Axel were so knowledgeable of the area and were able to show us so much wildlife we would have missed if we hiked on our own. The hike to the Arenal volcano overlook was a great experience to get more information on the area and the history. Carlos was happy to answer any questions and tried really hard to find us monkeys. He did spot 4 sloths and made sure everyone got a chance to get a good look at them! You end your day by relaxing in the springs and you have to check out the slide!

Despite not being able to swim at the waterfall the day was worth it. Loverly food great guides and some amazing photos.

Went with two friends and had so much fun. Beautiful experience with amazing views. Make sure to bring maybe an extra set of clothes. 10/10 experience

Franklin was awesome!!! Very knowledgeable, funny, and you can tell he loves MOMMY NATURE! All three guides were wonderful, but Franklin stole the show. Unfortunately the weather was bad on our tour and we did not get to swim in the waterfall. But, we “can’t control the weather Jackie!” I would recommend this. We took our time and took as many breaks as needed. Thank you Red Lava tours!
P.S. What an Amazing lunch. Thank you cooks and staff!
Vishali_S, Jun 2026

Great experience. Diego and JC did an great job at making sure we were immersed into the experience. The hike is absolutely worth it for the views that we got to experience!!!!
The waterfall was amazing and so scenic, the volcano was so peaceful and beautiful. I'm so glad I was able to get this experience as a first time traveler to COSTA RICA!!!
Elizabeth_B, Jun 2026
Long day, but definitely worth it! La Fortuna was beautiful. The views at Arenal were amazing. And the hot springs were very relaxing! Rasta and Chris were great guides. Definitely recommend!
Jessie_W, Jun 2026
This experience was top notch! The tour guides were very knowledgeable of any history or animal facts as we went through different areas! We were able to see the white faced capuchin monkeys and a sloth. The lunch was absolutely delicious and fresh fruit was an added bonus. The hikes were strenuous so be prepared for that but ending the day at the hot springs make it all worth it!
Linda_C, Jun 2026
It's a wonderful fun days. Good value! Lunch and snack and alcohol and hot spring were included! The tourist guides were very knowledgeable and attentive. You won't be disappointed with this tour!

This was a beautiful tour with an amazing tour guide, but it is difficult and very physical. Let me preface this by saying that my husband is a stroke survivor and we are 60 and 62. We are both physically active but the terrain was a bit much for him and was not expected.
The tour involved traversing down 500 narrow stone (and often uneven) steps, then climbing over large wet rocks to get to the waterfall. Time at the waterfall was followed by climbing back up the steps. After lunch we had another hike up the base of the volcano.
Diego was an incredible help to my husband and we could not have enjoyed it without his assistance.
Melanee_T, Jun 2026
Honestly I didn’t like doing waterfall first followed by dry activity followed by hot springs, another wet activity. We had to carry all our stuff with us on and off the bus couldn’t leave anything between activities. Didn’t end up swimming in the waterfall cuz didn’t want to hike wet. All the experiences were great but wish we did hike followed by waterfall and then hot spring.
