Mrs. Emika was a wonderful hostess. Although a 10-15 minute walk from the Kasura station, she lives in a very nice neighborhood and we enjoyed walking, with the assistance of google map, through the winding streets of her neighborhood. Emika was warm and inviting. Although she hasn't ever spent any time in a English speaking country, her English is comprehensive and easy to understand (Eigo o Jōzuna desu). She was very good about teaching and explaining Japanese eating culture. She involved all members of our family with the cooking experience and shared the recipes with us so we could replicate them at home. We chose the sushi experience and Emika was well suited as she worked in a sushi restaurant during the pandemic. Ture to the typical Japanese meal, we also made the side dishes like sonomono, broccolini dish and miso. For the miso she used miso paste that her family makes and it had a wonderful nutty flavor as compared to other miso soups. She sourced high quality ingredients for the sashimi portion of the meal. She was also very accommodating for my wife being a vegetarian. The tour of the local supermarket was also interesting and I would highly recommend that you participate in this as well. Her supermarket has a bakery and we stocked up on some Japanese breads and fresh fruits for snacks later in the day. It was an experience that was well worth it and if we are in Kyoto again we would consider taking another class so we could try her okonomikayi or gyoza.

My husband and I...

Judy_M, Oct 2025
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed spending an afternoon with Emika learning more about Japanese culture and cuisine. She is a gracious host and excellent teacher. We chose to make Okonomiyaki. They were delicious and we look forward to making them when we get back home. In addition we prepared some side dishes to go along with the okonomiyaki which rounded out our lunch. The trip to the local market was also very informative and allowed us to buy a few items to bring back with us. I highly recommend booking this experience.

Response from Host, Oct 2025

Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful review. We’re delighted to hear that you and your husband had such a memorable afternoon with Emika. It sounds like a perfect blend of culture, hands-on cooking, and delicious food. We’re sure she’ll be so happy to know how much you enjoyed both the okonomiyaki and your visit to the local market. We truly appreciate your kind recommendation and hope we can welcome you on another Traveling Spoon experience in the future.

Excellent afternoon...

Excellent afternoon cooking with Emika! She is so knowledgeable about not only what you are making but all sorts of Japanese food-related culture. It’s so special to cook with vegetables from her organic garden and use her uncle’s miso for the soup. She is patient and understanding as she explains how to make things and the meaning behind the dishes, especially during the tea ceremony. Going to the supermarket afterward was such a treat too!

One of the highlights of our trip!

What an amazing opportunity to meet, talk with, and learn to cook from a local! Emika was a thoughtful and gracious hostess, and everything was pre-planned and organized to maximize our time there. The ingredients she purchased were of the highest quality, and she even picked fresh organic vegetables from her garden. She gave us insight into daily life, culture, and her experiences working in a sushi restaurant - all while she taught us how to make an incredible meal. And we finished it with a beautiful matcha tea ceremony that was both tasty and insightful. This was one of the highlights of our trip! Thank you Emika for such an exceptional experience!

A home cooking experience that shows real Japanese home life.

Great experience with Emika.

This was a very enjoyable and informative experience. Emika was very patient and kind. She explained Japanese customs as well as detailed instructions in making sushi, Miso soup, and two vegtable side dishes. After making and eating our dishes, she took us to a local market to point out several Japanese food products and spices. This was a wonderful experience and well worth the time and cost.

Unique and fun experience!

John_S, Mar 2025
We cooked okomiyaki with Emika and it was super yummy and fun! Afterwards we went shopping locally for spices so that we can try at home

Organic and fresh!

Margarita_F, Sep 2024
We used vegetables grown organically by Emika to make a side dish before jumping into making sushi, and miso soup. We chose nigori sake as our drink - we recommend it but other options were also available. Most importantly Emika’s teaching style was clear and helpful and she gave us tips on where to get supplies to make sushi at home.

I would absolutely...

Haley_H, Sep 2024
I would absolutely recommend this experience to anyone visiting Kyoto! My husband and I were looking into cooking classes to do in Kyoto and were interested in Emika's because it seemed more intimate and authentic than some of the other classes we were finding. We had a lot of fun getting to Emika's house and getting to walk through a neighborhood that was a little farther from the main touristy areas (that being said it was still a very easy train and walk to get there). Emika welcomed us into her home and started the cooking class. She provided everything we needed and much of the produce was actually grown in her own community garden. She also let us try some of her homemade Shiso juice and the miso that we used for the soup was made by her Uncle. We thought all of these aspects made the class really unique and special. We enjoyed learning about the foods we were making and also enjoyed chatting with Emika and learning more about her and her life. She was really helpful with giving us recommendations for places to go/try next. Ultimately, I think this was one of our most special experiences during our two week trip in Japan since it was so unique and authentic.

Best cooking class in Kyoto

Samantha_H, Sep 2024
Highly recommend! Emika was a wonderful host. Many of the ingredients we got to cook with were from her garden and made delicious food. Far exceeded expectations, definitely a highlight of our trip!

Wonderful unique activity!

Sophie_T, Jun 2024
Amazing experience! Emika welcomed us in her beautiful home for a private nigiri class. My husband is vegetarian and she was able to accommodate him wonderfully. We loved learning about japaneese culture and we still can’t stop talking about how great the meal was. Hopefully we will be able to do the same at our home. I recommend this class to anyone wishing to try a unique activity while visiting Kyoto!

Really enjoyable cooking session

Karen_C, May 2024
Emika was a wonderful host to our family. She answered our questions and showed us tips and tricks for the recipes we prepared together. She even answered our non-food related questions about Japanese culture and etiquette. Her communication prior the the session was also great. This was a fabulous addition to our itinerary and it was super useful doing this after a few days in Japan. I would highly recommend this to anyone interested in bringing Japanese cooking into your own kitchen. (Arigato gosaimasu Emika!)

Authentic Kyoto cooking experience

KENNY_T, Apr 2024
Emika was most welcoming and friendly. We had an awesome time making sushi, side dishes and tea matcha tea. Would highly recommend to anyone visiting Kyoto. This experience was one of the highlights of our trip.

We recommend!

Christine_L, Apr 2024
This was a brilliant occasion to learn about the Japanese culture concerning mostly the cooking with a local. Our group was composed of 2 middle-aged adults, 1 younger adult and 1 teen and we all enjoyed the activity equally. We prepared our food seated comfortably at the dinner table, equipped with the recipes and a pen if we wanted to take notes. As a professionally trained chef Emika had a lot of helpful advice for us when she guided us through the different stages of the preparation of the different dishes. We had good fun preparing our dinner, Emika was a good teacher and good company. Follow her on Instagram @emikakyoto and enjoy the experience!

Great experience

Ajit_P, Apr 2024
Omika was a great host. Her knowledge and teaching skills are exemplary. We learnt a number of things including sushi, soups and such. She also gives tidbits about food and culture that is not available on the web

A must do class! Teenager loved it - a major win!

Jennifer_R, Apr 2024
This experience was one of the highlights of our family trip to Kyoto. Emika was easy to communicate with and responsive to our questions leading up to the class. The sushi making class itself was relaxed, informative and fun! Emika shared a few tricks and special ingredients I can’t wait to try when we get home. I definitely recommend this class!

Very fun!

Amazing authentic sushi making class

Suneer_M, Mar 2023
It was a great experience to learn how to make some sushi and other related dishes. Emika was very kind and knew how to involve the kids. It was very cool to walk through her neighborhood and learn at her home for a more authentic experience in a private setting.

Must do in Kyoto

JoannaLyn_R, Sep 2019
Today I did a sushi making class with a lovely lady called Emika Inoa in her parents house. She showed me how to prepare the sushi rice, make the miso soup, and the seasonal veges. Then carefully roll the rice in your hands, and put raw fish on top. You can wrap seaweed around it too, there are no rules just go for it! And I have to say I think mine turned out awesome. Looks pretty but tasted even better. Good ingredients make all the difference 😍

Tolles Kocherlebnis in Kyoto

Leele_H, Apr 2024

Excellent moment de partage et de dégustation
