What To Expect

Be ready for pickup at your Puerto Plata hotel at 8:30am; be sure to bring a swimsuit and towel. Sit back and relax on the scenic drive to Sosua Bay, one of the area's best snorkeling and scuba diving spots.

Once you arrive, listen to a safety briefing and orientation from your instructors. Get set up with a mask, fins, and snorkel, then head out on the boat dive in for the first snorkeling stop, inside the bay. Spend 45 minutes exploring the bay, taking in views of the coral reefs, vibrant fish, and rock formations.

Return to the beach for some time to relax, swim, and sunbathe on the beach. There's a beach bar and restaurant where you can sidle up and order the catch of the day if you like (own expense) before heading to the second snorkel site. These three rocks, just below the surface of the water, are home to an abundance of marine life. After the end of this second snorkeling session, head back to Puerto Plata for drop-off.

A mixed bag

Let me start with the positive. The guide was very kind and patient with our grandson and the snorkeling was pretty good. As for the rest of it, I should have done more research. The location shown on the aviator app is on a few minutes from the cruise port, but the actual snorkeling is more than an hours drive away. Since we arrived later than the departure time, we took a taxi to the snorkel spot ($140 round trip) but that was actually better than the open air bus they provided since that would have required we wait on everyone else to finish. The “beach” where you meet is in a sketchy area with lots of dilapidated structures. Overall it was not what we expected, but folks still had a nice time.

Excellent snorkeling on a very organized tour. Our snorkeling guide helped beginners and gave all of us a chance to see lots of fish by guiding us to the best spots and feeding the fish to attract them.
