I went into this tour with low expectations, and we were still disappointed by a few things.
First off, it took me 3 times to get in contact with the tour company to confirm my pick up time, which ended up being 7:50. They informed me that we had to be ready 10 minutes before at our hotel lobby. We waited half an hour for someone to finally get us, but then the tour company employee made us walk to a meeting point. Why offer the hotel pick-up option if you just made us go to a meeting point on Fifth Avenue? From this moment on, I knew the tour was going downhill.
Our first stop ended up not being Chichén Itzá, but rather a quaint colonial town called Valladolid. I found the cathedral stunning; however, the stop was only 25 minutes long. They immediately brought us to a tequila shop for a tasting, and the workers there hounded my partner and I about buying tequila and silver. It tainted my experience, and it made me feel really uncomfortable.
Once we left Valladolid, we headed towards Cenote Xunaan. Our tour guide, Manuel—though enthusiastic, nice, and funny—gave us a whole blurb about his Mayan culture, and how we'd get these Mayan birth calendars and horoscopes like him. It ended up being 550MXN each, and the final product looked so inauthentic. Plus, they got my birthday wrong.
Once we got to Xunaan, the place was beautifully arranged. We got to see a shaman perform some ritual, which was interesting; but after we had 20 minutes to browse the gift shop. Right away, an employee tried to convince me to buy what was supposed to be a real obsidian bracelet for 1000MXN and, of course, more tequila. She was nice about it, but I just felt compelled to buy something overpriced. I got chocolate, earrings, and shot glasses... but again, it was too expensive.
All the fees we had to pay made going to the cenote less entertaining. It was beautiful, but the time to swim was limited and again, you had to rent life jackets for 90MXN. At least, the weather was perfect for swimming.
We then had the Mexican buffet we were promised in the itinerary, which was probably my least favourite part of this tour. I forgot drinks weren't included in the package, so after accidentally grabbing a water, one of the restaurant workers aggressively checked my bracelet and said it wasn't part of my package. After I left, he made sure that I paid (which I did in coins), and was so strict about it. I'm fine with paying, but at least be more polite about it. The food was also meh.... our resort had much BETTER Mexican food.
After the cenote, we finally made way to what we were the most excited about: Chichén Itzá. Our tour guide gave us some solid tips, but then promoted bug spray for the mosquitos, which they sold for 200MXN. On the bus, they charged us $80USD for my partner and I for the entrance fee, but when I looked at the ticket at the heritage site, the actual cost ended up being $45 Canadian Dollars. So, again, we were fooled into paying more.
I did enjoy Chichén Itzá the most. The tour guide was informative, but I honestly wanted more time there. We were only at the site for 2 hours, not 3 like the listing stated. Plus, entering the site was wild because all the vendors try to get your attention and sell, essentially, the same things. Maybe I would've purchased a souvenir there if I hadn't been hounded all morning and afternoon already by the tour guides and the cenote/Valladolid vendors. Anyway, my partner and I did enjoy this part of the tour the most despite everything.
Another good thing was that our driver, Jorge, was super fast! We got to Playa Del Carmen under two hours, but this was the cherry on top because guess what?! We had to get off the bus with our tour guide to wait for ANOTHER bus to bring us to Fifth Avenue.... we were dropped off at some random street across a gas station, and we waited for 15 minutes. This left me even more stressed because we weren't familiar with the area, and we had a dinner reservation to get to at 9pm. It was 8 something when the bus finally got us. This was all after tipping the tour company generously.
I'm honestly really upset by this experience because Chichen Itza was supposed to be a highlight from this trip. Although everyone was nice, I'm not happy with all the upselling and scams. I get everyone has to make a living in Mexico because I also come from a place facing the same conditions, but this was excessive. I definitely won't be doing this tour again, and if anything, book a private tour or maybe book an excursion with your resort.

What they do not share with you is how much extra money you need for this! They stop at expensive shops for you to use the bathroom, and the stores hound you to buy.! Then they do not tell you to bring bug replant, and you can buy from them to avoid malaria!!! Then they ask for feedback and look at response in front of you! They bring tip basket and stand by your seat until you make a deposit… very unprofessional in my opinion…

This tour was amazing!!! Our guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. It's a long day but so worth it. I recommend it
Matt, Oct 2024
The whole day was hectic and unmanaged. The Tour guide was responsible for 2 different language group which I am sympathetic to but it was handled poorly. Instead of going through all the instructions with one language and then going through the instructions in another language. She bounced back and forth every few sentences between Spanish and English. By the time I realized she was talking in English again, it was already halfway through her statements and back to Spanish. Phrases like "We meet back where we leave" are very vague. Leave the bus? Leave the group? Also when? My wife and I had no idea what time to meet back up with the tour guide or where to meet. At one point I was seriously worried about being left behind. Which wouldn't have been a problem if the tour group stuck together but the majority of the sites were "Ok we are here, go explore". The tour felt more like a bus drive than a guided tour. I think we had a total of 45m over the 8 hours we were in a guided tour guide group. There are lots of viator options to go to Chichen Itza, pick a different one.

What a great experience! Sergio was amazing and so knowledgeable. He also assisted when I got a little dehydrated and overheated. He took great care of us and I would highly recommend!

I was very excited about this tour. I texted and called the tour guide early on the day of to no avail. I then called viator customer support to try and check in with the tour operators. They were also unable to get in contact with the tour operator. In short, I ended up wasting a whole morning on my vacation waiting for them to simply no show and ignore all calls and messages. Horrible company. Do not recommend.

Great trip. Everything went well for us. First stop, Cenote was refreshing wish we could have stayed longer. The lunch was delicious. Second, Chichen Itza, it was very hot but worth it. Last the Mexican town, was do cute and we had Mexican Crepes. Marquesitas they were delicious. Its a ling day but all worth it!
Hitesh_S, Jun 2024
The travel company and the bus tour company were horrible. The AC at the back was not working, and the bus tour company did not try to help. The back of the bus smelt of urine from the toilet.
I will not recommend this company for any of the tour.
Delvon_R, May 2024
The tour was amazing and the tour guide was very informative. Highly recommend. Ashame we could not climb the stairs of the temple. And it was extremely hot, recommend a hat or umbrella.
Kate_O, Apr 2024
The tour was good and Angel was a great guide.
We only had 2 hours at chichen itza and not the 3 advertised, but as we went to the cenote first we arrived there at 1pm right at the hottest part of the day. It felt like it would have been better to go there first in the morning as it was so hot.
However, on approach to the cenotes began the selling of items. We were told that our bags would be searched and any non-biodegradable sun cream or mosquito repellent would be confiscated so that we should buy theirs. Most people bought the mosquito repellent off them for $250mxn. Obviously our bags were not checked for these items, and they had the same mosquito repellent on sale at chichen itza for $95mxn. This was the first time in our travels in Mexico we really felt as though we were ripped off and it tainted our day somewhat.

Tour guide Gaby was phenomenal. Great experience for a good price considering we went during spring break. Wasn’t over crowded. Food was delicious. Would absolutely recommend.
Pawel_W, Feb 2024
Meeting point offered me through your website wasn't available to trip company. They asked me to pay extra 30 USD for collection from my Hotel or go to other meeting point which was 10 km away from my place. In my opinion this was unfair and for this reason I don't recommend Viator to book any trips.
Secondly , guide from Sightseeing company Tony wasn't polite and kind to me. Other two Guys were brilliant and helpful.
Lastly, stop in Valladolid is a waste of time, Church is nice outside but you not alout to see onsite.
Apart from that above all the rest was amazing.
I am recommending to visit Chichen Itza but maybe with different tour provider.
Thanks
Ming_Z, Feb 2024
Chichen Itzá is amazing! Hubiku Cenote is cool. I just wish we spend more time at each place.
The tour guides were selling too much along the way:(
Vishwajit_B, Dec 2023
Tour guide tony was excellent and the entire tour was amazing. The tour company didn't give us any update about pick up time and we had to call and follow up multiple times with them on day of the tour.
XiangZhi_Z, Dec 2023
Actually no lunch was provided (the lunch is supposed to be included),and there was also a mistake for dropping off.
Adam_T, Jul 2023
They should update tour. First went to cenote Hubiku, at start of tour they ask if you want your Maya name created in silver (i think cost was like $23USD+$3/letter) or calendar. On bus small bug spray $13, Sunscreen? When you get to Hubiku you get a quick photo for Xilmbal drink later on bus, see the silver stand, then the Maya alcohol or tequila, then the tree limbs purification, then the store. Sounded like typical forced souvenirs but it wasn't bad at all. Unlike some other countries. Sure, everyone wants tips, but that is up to you.
At Cenote: Life jacket is NOT required ($2), locker was $1 and they give you necklace key. It was fairly large.. guessing bigger than 12"x12"x12". You must shower up top before going in the water and can walk over SMALL rocks like 15-20 steps (you will survive. they are not sharp!). Nice Cenote. there is jump off area. Shower after.
Lunch was good. No drinks included (not water), I'm not sure how much they were ~$2? I paid the $10 to have drinks included and got beer, water, margarita x2.
On the bus a guy joined and tapes the photo they took of you on bottle of Xilmbal Xtabentun. Get to try a tiny taste of the anise, honey, 30% alcoholic Mayan drink (tastes like some sort of mouthwash) Looks like nice souvenir but is Very costly 550peso ~$32 for 295ml!!
See Chichen Itza at the heat of the day and the busiest time. lol Which is why they should really change their explanation of order. The place is big, so it didn't feel over crowded when i was there July 4th weekend. I believe we were there 12:47 to 3:10. I chose this tour specifically because it was one of the few that said 3 hours. I managed to walk medium speed to see I think everything. I would have preferred 3 hours to take excessively more photos :) But I suppose 2h20m sufficed.
Luckily UNESCO told government to control the hawkers to stay at their stalls or loose designation. So they are no longer an issue other than saying everything is $1 to get your attention.. and several were tell same joke.. 'free'. I liked the guy who said $3. If I wanted to buy there I would have went to more honest up front seller.
The guys dressed up were at the exit at the side. They asked for $20 for photos. I gave $5.
Next was Valladolid. I thought that would be boring and expecting the worst for forced places like this. but it a good city to walk around the square for 30min. 45m is ok too. Yummy snacks.
It was a fun trip.
I have some time estimates.
Hotel pick up hotel zone 7:10 (I was one of first stops) Bus ended up FULL (~60?)
9:30-11:45 at Cenote
12:45-3:10 at Chichen Itza
16:08-16:48 at Valladolid
19:53 first hotel stop
20:25 my nearly last hotel stop. First on = Last off

We loved Chichen Itza and the Cenote! When we booked this tour, it said max 8. We thought we were paying more for a small group experience which wasn’t the case. This is a 60 person tour bus so choose the less expensive options available and have the same experience. The other thing that caught us by surprise is that we went to the Cenote first. We thought it was Chichen Itza (coolest part of the day) followed by Cenote and then stop in town. That meant that we went swimming in the coolest part of the day and were at the Temple in the intense sun at the hottest part of the day. I would have liked to have the itinerary reversed like it’s listed in the title.
Devon_G, Jun 2023
Ruins were amazing. Would have loved more time there. We were upset to learn the museum was closed however. Bring sunbrella, personal fan, and/or water sprayer because limited shade and very hot. Ceynote dip was worth it but it should have been on the way back when we were hot and sweaty. Karla was a wonderful tour guide. Lunch was awesome. Best cerdo (pork) lunch and dont forget to ask for tortillas at the table ( they aren't in the buffet). Also shopping prices at the ruins are cheaper than the town. Great tour!
Amina_A, Mar 2023
Guides/operator are dishonest! They claimed the access tax to chichen itza was 34USD and made sure we paid the amount to them in advance because it is actually 26USD!!! They basically take the difference and claim that’s all for the tax!!! In addition to that, they try to sell you products at an inflated price and pretty much force you to get into a souvenir shop at every stop where you’re pressured into buying more overpriced items - I did another tour in Tulum where the same products were sold at half the price!!!
Daphne_G, Jan 2023
Sergio is the BEST tour guide ever! He is super knowledgeable about the culture and history of the Mayan people. He will make your tour to Chichen Itza very special. Thank you for a beautiful day I will always remember. 🫶
Giulia_C, Jan 2023
The tour was cancelled in the morning after we went to the meeting point. And the company of the tour didn’t answer me at all. I contact viator and they told me that I can have a redound, now i’m waiting for them to receive my money back
Judith_G, Jan 2022
This trip was awesome! We love the Cenote experience and Chichen Itza. The tour guide (Marco) and bus driver (Victor) were very pleasant and professional. Definitely recommend this tour.
Jason_S, Jan 2021
I read many reviews before deciding that it doesn't matter which one you pick as they are all similar with similar complaints as well. Sure enough, many of the same annoyances happened on our trip as well. We were picked up first and then spent 1:30 hours picking up others, and then we were dropped off almost last which meant we spent an extraordinarily long time on the bus in addition to the distance to the actual historical site. The good news is we got to pick our seat and the bus was comfortable and clean. As I read in other reviews, the lunch at the cenote is first for some bizarre reason, much earlier than lunch would normally be. However, the lunch was very good and the cenote was interesting and pretty, but not much to actually do there if you aren't swimming. It was an unexpected highlight to be traditionally greeted by a Mayan shaman upon arriving at the cenote to remove any bad spirits we brought.
Once we arrived at Chichen Itza, we were passed off to a different guide because of the group-size limitations. Diego was our guide and was fantastic. He is of Mayan background and is everything you want a guide to be--knowledgeable, enthusiastic, fun, and easy to ask questions of.
Not the tour operator's fault, but the hundreds of peddlers of trinkets yelling "one dollar" or "almost free" and physically approaching you as you get within 50 feet of them is aggravating. It is literally a constant swarm anywhere you go in the complex. I did buy a magnet from one of them and was able to negotiate the price a little bit. Even the price he originally offered was significantly less than what I would pay for at any gift shop.
Then we stopped in Valladolid on the ride back. I'm not sure why. We only spent 30 minutes so it wasn't a big problem. The town itself looked way more taken care of than any other town we had passed through on our trip, even better overall than Cancun. Not just the parts we were dropped off in, but the parts of town we drove through to get there looked cleaner and brighter and sharper than anywhere else on the trip. And then I saw the police--a lot of police presence in the town square area both on foot and in vehicles.
As far as the tour operator itself, what a drag. The driver was fine and professional. There was an assistant there who I don't know what she did other than count people on the bus to make sure we didn't leave anyone--I'm sure she did more, but I don't know what. And then there is Karla, our main guide. As someone who finds it hard to learn other languages, I am always fascinated by someone who can flip between two languages like it's nothing. Karla has that skill and it was great. She gives a memorized scripted speech to teach about the Mayans and their culture. It seems like this is her job and so she does it, but doesn't seem all that excited about it. She did give a great story about her Mayan birth certificate and what everything means, and guess what, we can buy one too! At first, I didn't think anything of it until suddenly every so often there was always another opportunity to buy something and then another thing and another thing. The upselling from the market vendors at Chichen Itza was expected, but the frequent hawking of items on the bus itself where we were trapped was a big turnoff.
I did buy a birth certificate because it was neat and she said the Mayans at the cenote would "do it for you" on handmade papyrus type material. By "do it" you would assume they meant "do the artwork," but what it really means is put your birthdate in a computer program and print it out on maybe-handmade cardstock. So I just paid for a Mayan (maybe) to press print on a computer--how authentic!
When you get to the cenote, they force you to get your picture taken--I already knew this was going to turn into an upsell so I pushed my way past and didn't let them take my picture. On the bus trip to Chichen Itza, the photographer magically shows up on the bus--Karla called it a "special treat." He, at least, seemed enthusiastic to be there and to talk about how the traditional Mayan tequila is made. We were able to have samples of it, which I guess was a treat. But then from his backpack he pulls out other bottles of the tequila with everyone's pictures pasted on the label. He passed them out and then you had the chance to purchase them. It was a clever way to do the picture upsell, I just didn't expect it to be while we were captive on a bus. It felt like a drug deal where you get the sample for free and then here comes the sale if you want more. I'm on vacation, I don't need this constant vending.
Then, the icing on the cake...as we approached Cancun at the end, Karla then ASKED for tips. Maybe it's cultural differences, but she basically said all the things she did on the trip to earn a tip and that we should tip her and her assistant and the driver. In MY culture, that is bad form. Imagine if your waiter listed all the ways they helped you at dinner and because of that you need to tip him. Crazy! I know Karla probably thought it would influence our tipping, and for me, it certainly did--but not in the way she wanted. I was going to tip what I normally would out of obligation for average service, but after her trying to guilt me or whatever, I reduced the amount. I used to wait tables, and if people don't tip you or give you a bad tip, that's part of the gig. If it bothers you that much, you're in the wrong business.
Overall, it was a net positive because of the sites--I got to see Chichen Itza and the cenote. The ride was comfortable and smooth. The tour company itself seems like it could easily be replaced by any other tour company and you'd get an equal experience.

We really enjoyed the guide in French. He explained the site very well. At the cenotes we ate well everything was well organized
