Q: Do you need a tour guide for Mount Etna?

While you can still explore much of Mt. Etna on your own, tour guides can promise a safer experience and take you to the highest craters at about 10,800 feet (3,300 meters) above sea level. Without a guide, you can only reach about 9,500 feet (2,900 meters). Hike up or buy Mt. Etna (Monte Etna) tickets for the cable car.

Q: What do you wear on top of Mount Etna?

Hiking boots are highly recommended for Mt. Etna as the terrain is often steep and passes over layers of volcanic sand. You can ride the cable car (Funivia dell'Etna) from Rifugio Sapienza to the lower craters and walk the paved paths without hiking boots, but taking on any trails requires sturdy shoes.

Enjoyable experience

The tour was great and very well organized. Our guide Pepe was knowledgeable and friendly, and we really enjoyed learning about the area. Unfortunately, due to heavy snow, we weren’t able to climb Mt. Etna as planned, but this was for safety reasons and understandable. Taormina village was absolutely beautiful and made the day very worthwhile. Overall, a very enjoyable experience and still highly recommended.

Good way to get on Etna

The guide and his girlfriend were very nice. His English is not great but good enough. Note that this tour doesn’t take you to the top of the crater; just up to where the gondola starts (it’s broken for the long term). Anyway, hike around lower blowout crater, then get overlook on back side of Etna. Good way to get up there and price is reasonable. Not bad.

The tour operators were very helpful and organized. Overall, they communicated the days itinerary well. Mount. Etna was interesting. There are a number of options to do there, including a quad ride, as well as hiking around the craters. Do be aware there is a cost to hike on these trails – five euro. The amphitheater was interesting to see. Time is short so I suggest packing a luncheon eating it at the amphitheater. If you go to a restaurant first, you might be a little pressured for time.

Incredible tour of Mt. Etna.

We loved our tour with Lucca! The Silvestri crater was incredible, but the best part was the tour of the lava tube. Lucca found one that was long but also not very crowded so he was able to give us an in-depth explanation. Definitely have lunch at the end of the tour. The honey served with the antipasti is mind-blowing. This one of the highlights of our trip to Sicily.

The trip was very enjoyable. There was much less walking than I expected, but the descent into the lava tube was not suitable for anyone with bad knees! Our guide was very pleasant, but she didn’t understand or answer questions in English, which was a bit of a problem. With these caveats I would recommend this trip.

Amazing ride. Some great uphill and downhill. A few technical spots but not difficult if you have mountain biking experience. Beautiful scenery with orchards and trees. Our guide was Arturo and we loved his company. Electric bikes allowed you to work as hard as you wanted. Etna was snow coated and beautiful.
