Itinerary
Coordinating transportation, reindeer encounters, and Northern Lights viewing around Tromso can be difficult, especially in winter conditions, but this guided evening tour brings everything together in one well-organized experience. With pickup from central Tromso included, there is no need to navigate icy roads or search for viewing locations on your own.
After arriving at the camp, begin the evening with reindeer sledding, followed by time spent with the animals. Under supervision, you can feed and pet the reindeer while guides keep watch on the sky for any early signs of the northern lights. Being in a quiet natural setting increases the chances of spotting the lights if conditions allow.
Next, head inside a traditional lavvu tent to warm up and enjoy a meal of traditional Sami stew, served with a hot drink such as coffee, tea, or hot chocolate. During the meal, your guide shares stories about Sami culture and daily life and introduces traditional artifacts still used today. The guide comes from a Sami reindeer herding family, offering personal insight into these traditions.
If the northern lights appear while you are indoors, staff monitor conditions and alert the group so you can step outside to view them. Otherwise, the experience continues outdoors after the storytelling concludes, giving another opportunity to watch the sky before returning comfortably to Tromso at the end of the evening.

It was well organized. The Sami talk was very informative. The Reindeer sledding was really fun and it was very surreal for us because the Northern lights were out during our ride. The only issue was the toilets and that is not the fault of the tour company or the location. It is from disgusting people that pee all over the toilet and floor so a woman cannot possibly use them without cleaning up the area first.

Sledding part had to be cancelled do to weather, but tour was great. Feeding reindeer was a lot of fun.

We really appreciate your flexibility with the weather Arctic conditions can change quickly. We’re happy the reindeer feeding still made the day special and fun for you. Hopefully next time you’ll get to enjoy the sledding too! Warm wishes from the team at Tromso Lapland 🦌

Although, due to lack of snow, we didn't enjoy a reindeer sleigh ride, we enjoyed everything else. The feeding, the reindeer stew, Sami stories and of course we had a glimpse of the Northern Lights. A discount was offered. A great night.
Response from Host, Mar 2026
Thank you for your lovely review! Although weather conditions didn’t allow for one of the planned activities, we’re really pleased to hear you still had a memorable and enjoyable evening. It’s great that you experienced the cultural elements and even witnessed a bit of the aurora. We truly appreciate your understanding and hope to see you again soon!

Excellent friendly guides. Very safe coach transfer. Beautiful experience in nature. Loved feeding the reindeer.

The reindeer sleigh ride was a lot of fun. It was a still and quiet night and an enjoyable sleigh ride. Feeding the reindeer was also fun, but a majority of them wouldn’t eat from being full from prior tour groups feeding them.
Response from Host, Mar 2026
What a wonderful review!
We are absolutely thrilled you enjoyed spending time with our reindeer herd. They truly are the stars of the show!
It sounds like the sled ride was a highlight. We take great care of our animals, and it’s wonderful to see the joy they bring our visitors.
Thank you again for visiting Tromsø Lapland.❤️

The Sami talk was brilliant. John was very interesting and knowledgeable I wish he was involved more.
The rest of the experience was slow and felt a bit unorganised. Which left us feeling a bit bored. Also the event felt overbooked and crowded, it was uncomfortable I think if they sold 10 less tickets it would have been so much more enjoyable. Communal dining is fine but not if it feels as though you’re sat on strangers knees. It felt understaffed for the amount of staff.
The reindeer seemed bored of being fed too and the sled ride was short/ didn’t venture far out. Overall a lot of money when the only enjoyable part was the Sami talk with John who can’t be praised enough, he would get 5 stars but unfortunately the rest was below average and would get 0 stars

Experience was incredible. Reindeer are friendly.
It's a 45-50 min bus ride to Lapland. When you arrive, you are brought into a large room with tables. Chocolate chip and Oreo (they are vegan) cookies are available on the table with a thermos of hot water. You can choose from tea, instant coffee, or hot chocolate. They had both a reindeer stew and a vegetarian stew.
A large bus brings you there. You share the bus with others going solely to feed the reindeer.
Dress warmly. There are cute little huts with fires that are very warm. But if you get too cold, you can go inside the building to warm up.
The sledding was super fun.

It's an absolute must. We loved meeting the Sami and learning about their unique culture and history. I wish there was more time to learn more, however, it certainly gave us the motivation to do our own research following the trip. I travelled with 2 young children and they loved meeting the Reindeer and feeding the. As well as the sledding! Wonderful experience!

This was a wonderful experience. A little tricky getting to pickup point downtown from the cruise terminal, but with proper planning it works out well. Fortunately our cruise line ran shuttles downtown and the drop off is right where the tour picks you up. Our cruises shuttle service ended earlier than our return to pickup point so we had to make arrangements via UBer. It cost about $25 US and 10 minutes travel time. It is a 50 minute ride to the Sami village and they are very good in directing you to where you need to be. The tour consists of to parts. Feeding the reindeer and the ride on the reindeer sliegh. Both are very exciting to do. It was snowing during our entire trip so seeing the northern lights was not a option. The sligh ride was so much fun. The guide was very good and quite funny. He sang a old Sami traditional song while we were out. It was very good. I would recommend recording this ride with your phone on night mode to catch his song. Feeding the reindeer was fun as well however since this was the second part of our visit the deer were almost full from the first groups feeding. So when you arrive you must decide which one is most important to you and go with first. The deer are very gentle and the Sami guide does a very good jo in preparing you for the visit with the deer. When we finished both events we inside and had a traditional Sami meal. They served a traditional Sami reindeer stew or a vegan vegetsble soup. We chose the vegan, we just couldn’t do reindeer. The people at our table did enjoy the reindeer stew. They also served bread, water, hot teas and coffee. We enjoyed the meal. Afterwards our guide spent about an hour talking about the Sami people and their traditions. Our all it was a 10/10 experience.
Response from Host, Feb 2026
Thank you very much for taking the time to share such a detailed and thoughtful review! We’re delighted to hear that you had such a memorable experience at the Sami village and enjoyed both feeding the reindeer and the sleigh ride , especially with the snowfall creating a true Arctic atmosphere.
We also appreciate you mentioning the transportation logistics from the cruise terminal. It’s great to know the shuttle made the outbound journey easy, and your tips will be helpful for future guests planning their visit.
It’s wonderful to hear that you enjoyed our guide’s storytelling and traditional Sami song during the sleigh ride — those moments really help bring the culture to life. We’re glad you liked the meal as well, including the vegan soup option, and that the cultural presentation gave you a deeper understanding of Sami traditions.
Thank you again for your recommendation and kind words. We’re thrilled that you rated the experience 10/10 and hope to welcome you back again in the future!

It was nice and the reindeer soup was very good, loved the ride and got to see the aurora and feed the deers
Response from Host, Jan 2026
What an absolutely incredible review, thank you! We are overjoyed that the magic of the Sámi culture was complimented by the beauty of the Northern Lights during your visit. That is truly a rare and special combination.
We're glad we could share that unforgettable Arctic night with you.

This was a lovely trip out of Tromso, was really special feeding the reindeers. The male leading the sleigh was very passionate about promoting how the Sami people live and this is protecting nature. There's a chance to see the Northern lights because of less light pollution we did see weak Norther light display which disappeared fairly quickly. Was very interesting to hear more about Sami ways from a younger female perspective. Reindeer stew was nice too, felt welcomed

We appreciate you choosing us!

Unfortunately due to weather conditions the sledding part was cancelled and refunded but the up close encounter with the reindeer, the meal and the talk about the Sami culture were excellent. I would definitely recommend.
Addie_L, Jan 2025
Bad weather when we went (ICY roads and meadow; one of the two large buses had trouble on the way home), and although the staff were polite, I felt they resented us for making them take the reindeer out in poor conditions. Quite frankly, the company should've canceled. The experience felt rushed, too (perhaps we got there late due to the ice), and the reindeer pulling our sled was slipping and jerking around on the terrain in a way that scared me for both him AND us. Dinner was lacklustre, the reindeer stew a bit flavorless and sparse, and the presentation on Sami culture, while interesting, was just a sketch--even a caricature--of the culture... I guess I should've expected as much; there isn't time to get into all the history and politics, and the audience is varied enough that sticking to wedding clothes and language probably feels like the safest option. I was disappointed, though.

I had so much fun! Feeding and riding the reindeer was awesome! Felt like Santa haha food was ok bread and cookies were delicious. Learning about the Sami culture was really cool too! My only recommendation is don’t book this as your northern lights excursion. The northern lights tour guides are clear sky chasers. As the reindeer excursion brings you to the reindeer farm exclusively it’s not guaranteed there will be clear skies there. So definitely book a separate tour for northern lights but I think this experience is totally worth it. The reindeer are adorable and the ride was a blast. Hope to return to the Sami’s one day as they were fantastic hosts!

Magical evening!
The reindeer sled ride and feeding experience was just amazing. So magical in the snow and under the stars.
We had our 11 month old with us who just loved the ride too!
Then we heard a bit about Sami life and had a delicious warm meal. A must when visiting Tromso!
Michaela_M, Jan 2025
Great experience about an hour outside the city. Short ride in the sleds was great, especially with how cold it was. Feeding the reindeer was an adventure as they argued over the food. The stew and culture talk was great, although you may want a snack before you go out there. Didn’t see the northern lights, but I will never hold that against this kind of tour. It was overcast my entire trip
Thijs, Jan 2025
It was a great experience, very nice people. The reindeer sledding was very cool. And we saw the northern lights!
Kelsey_B, Jan 2025
Very well organized. Kind staff that allows flexibility. The experience itself was amazing, would really recommend it. We saw northern lights too so it couldn't be better!
Kate_P, Jan 2025
There is an hours bus transfer each way, don’t do it in the dark as you won’t see the reindeer properly or enjoy the sledge ride as it’s not lit up at all. Staff were lovely and set up was nice but an experience so not do in pitch black.
Patrick_M, Dec 2024
Way too many people on this tour for the size of the place. Crammed into the hut and not able to enjoy the feeding with so large of group.
Response from Host, Jan 2025
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. We’re sorry to hear that the group size impacted your experience. We appreciate your feedback and will consider it as we work to improve our tours and ensure a more enjoyable experience for everyone.

It was indeed an excitng life time experience to ride Reindeer sledging . However food provided in the camp was not that satisfactory. Atleast hotel drop off should have been included as we had to walk a distance of about one kilometre to our hotel at the chliily snowy night and that too at about midnight.
Paul_P, Dec 2024
Wonderful way to spend an evening
Wrap up warm
The insight into the Sami culture is fascinating
The sledging was particularly fun
Saw_L, Dec 2024
Wonderful, except for the toilet. Not female friendly. It would be better if female do not need to climb us the toilet
Johanne_N, Dec 2024
Didn't get to feed reindeer problem with a rogue reindeer didn't get the proper experience with sledding either.
CARINE_A, Dec 2024
Tromso is a touristic place. This experience sledding reindeer with culture sami is a thing to do when you stay in tromso. But i think this tour it is for me maybe not for others too " touristic" and overpriced. There are 2 big buses...the place where you go is very nice far from tromso and you have maybe the opportunity to see nothern lights. Reindeer are very cute, it is a beautiful animal. But i didn t appreciate, the food, i though it was a joke, you help yourself, chocolate powder, plastic cup not the traditionnal sami wood cup, because we are maybe 60 people...i did a feeding reindeer experience in sweden but it was a little farm and we fed with lichen and not pellets...it is not bad , but for me too touristic and overpriced for the food
Daniel_L, Dec 2024
Great experience sledding, feeding and learning about the reindeer and Sami culture. Very christmas-sy!
Ellaine_A, Dec 2024
We had a fantastic evening with raindeer sled, real sami food, feeding of the raindeer and a great and interesting speach by Jan Kristian, our guide about sami culture. Highly recommended for others and very family friendly. Recommended for norwegians too. Thank you for a great experience 😃

It is good experience to see the SAMI way of life. Bath room is very primitive. I wish the story telling was little more informative.
