Had a wonderful day with Joao. We were picked up at our hotel and he took us first to a small family run winery where we toured the facilities and had a tasting. The winemaker was there and came out to answer questions and explain the wines a bit. We then went to lunch a local restaurant where our host ordered several delicious traditional dishes. The workers from the winery were also eating lunch there so you know it’s good! The afternoon had two more wineries - one smaller winery and another larger, but still local, winery. In between wineries he told us about the history of the region, some fun facts, etc. overall it was a great day and highly recommended!

This was a fantastic tour to small family run wineries. Sara was amazing as a guide. She is knowledgeable of the area and the wines, and was a delight to be with. Her passion for the people and their craft was evident! It was a well planned and wonderful day.

Amazing day in the Duro

Joao was great. He took us to two very different wineries. The first was a family run vineyard making wine via organic methods. Even the design for the bottles were as unique as the wine and they sold to local restaurants. The second was part of the Symington family of wineries and was also great. Looking out onto the river while tasting wines doesn’t get much better. Joao also took us to a local restaurant for lunch where we had traditional dishes with some more wine. Finally after touring all around the valley Joao saved the best for last. He took us to a wine maker who had some of the most delicious Tawny port. The 40 & 50 year old small batches are made by a local and sold locally. Best of all when we went to dinner that night the restaurant we had made reservations with carried both the organic wine and small batch port. Needless to say we had we had a bottle with dinner. I would highly recommend as Joao was great and very knowledgeable.

It was great seeing and learning about the stunning valley, visiting three different quintas, and spending the day with Joao who was both super knowledgeable and fun. He was open to customization and recommended a great restaurant when we returned to Porto. Highly recommend!!

Worth every penny!

Definitely worth every penny! What a great experience we had with Joao and we'd recommend this to anyone interested in visiting the beautiful Douro Valley just outside of Porto. From the moment Joao met us near our hotel (we made a last minute change to our pickup location but otherwise he would have picked us up at our hotel), he was engaging and extremely personable. On our drive out to the first winery, we engaged in conversations spanning the history of Porto & Portugal, our visit to Portugal thus far, the background of Douro Valley & its spectrum of grape varietals and wines, and more. Needless to say, the drive went by extremely fast! Joao took us to a small winery where we were led on a tour of the facility and then sat down to taste their wines. During this time, Joao stepped aside and entrusted our experience to the winery team. At our next stop, Joao took us to a larger winery where we tasted a wide array of port wines, many of which we had not experienced before. Joao personally walked us through the flight of wines and a tour of the facility. It was truly amazing to see the difference in scale between a small winery vs a large-scale production. Lunch was at a neighborhood restaurant that was off the beaten path. We had a wonderful meal, sampling some of the local foods and wines that many from the wine industry go to. From there, we went to our third winery with breathtaking views of Douro Valley. It was a wonderful finish to the day before we headed back to our hotel (and I definitely snoozed off during the ride home). We would absolutely call Joao the next time we plan a trip to Portugal's Douro Valley to leave the driving to him, take us to wineries that wouldn't have been on our radar, and engage in great conversations.

The day was amazing. Diogo was superb. Fun knowledgeable, adjusted based on what we liked. If I had any advice - if you know you aren’t a fan of port, the wine is superb - ask for only wineries, and skip the port house.

Remarkable Douro Valley Tasting

Joao provides an intimate alternative to large one-size-fits-all tour operators. The Douro is his home, and his wine knowledge is unparalleled. His tour is an all-day endeavor and explores the twists and turns of the valley and the wine it produces. You can expect to visit three wineries each offering uniquely world class wines. Lunch is a separate stop and is equally classy. For me, this tour is worthy of five stars because you can expect to indulge in the highlights of this great region and skip the tourist traps. I would recommended this tour to anyone from wine experts to novices. Don't second guess yourself!

Treat Yourself. This Is Amazing, and Well Worth It.

This was the most absolutely perfect day trip. Joao met us on time, and was very easy to get along with. He picked us up in his impeccably clean car, at our Air B&B, and we had a very pleasant ride out from Porto to the Douro Valley. We got to know a little about each other and our families, and then Joao proceeded to learn about our tastes in wine, and why we chose the Douro to visit, etc. He gave us some different options for the tour, which was great. We stopped at three separate locations, first a small, family run vineyard, then a larger, more commercial style location, and then he gave us a choice on our way back for our third and final stop (we chose a smaller one). Joao guided us through all of the tours and tastings, and provided additional information and education about the wines (and other options), in addition to what the tasting provided. One of the stops was in Pinhao, where we had an amazing lunch (included), which, of course, included a glass of wine, as well as a delicious dessert, and a glass of port. We discovered, through his background in not only the hospitality industry, but as a sommelier in the area, that he had personal contacts at every location (including lunch) that helped make sure we not only "got in", but got top notch service as well. For example, at the larger winery we visited, he was allowed to provide us with a "behind the scenes" tour, which allowed us to compare production methods and styles between the smaller winery we had seen earlier (foot stomping) and the larger one (machine crushing). We appreciated the personal attention, and not a simple repeat of the same information over and over. It should be noted that the views of the Douro Valley are not to be missed. Joao pulled over several times so we could get pictures from scenic areas, something that would have been very difficult in a larger tour bus, for sure. This was, without question, and absolute FIRST CLASS experience. I am so happy to have chosen this route to see the Douro, and to have such a friendly, professional, and knowledgeable expert such as Joao as our personal guide. Our entire day was almost ten hours, and it was absolutely amazing. Thank you, Joao, for an unforgettable experience.
