Itinerary
Meet a driver at your hotel in Funchal for 9am departure, then travel to a trailhead for the São Jorge Valley.
Come prepared with sturdy shoes or hiking boots, and bring a packed lunch for a meal on the trail, as you’ll be hiking through a remote area throughout the day.
Set out on the trail into the São Jorge Valley, following a levada that stretches 8 miles (13 km) through the scenic valley. Designed to bring water into the driest parts of the island, Madeira’s oldest levadas date back to the 16th century. As you walk, you’ll see some of the herbs and medicinal plants that thrive in the lush valley—your guide can help point out the most important species.
One highlight of the walk is a picture-perfect waterfall, where you can slip behind the falling water to find a peaceful spot. This 8-hour hiking tour concludes with return transfer to Funchal, and drop-off at your original departure point.

Really cool hiking experience in the luscious greens of the North of Madeira. Boots with a good profile recommended. The guide was very nice and attentive.

The guide was very knowledgeable on the construction and purpose of the levada as well as all the local flora and fauna. It was a great walk, very relaxed and easy to do.
