Itinerary
Meet a driver at your hotel in Funchal for a 9am departure, then travel to the town of Choupana, in the highlands above the Madeira coast.
Set an easy-going pace as you walk alongside an experienced hiking guide, following the Levada da Serra do Faial through the forest—islanders have been building these irrigation canals since the 16th century, bringing water to the most arid places on Madeira. This section of trail is known for a profusion of flowering plants, and the air is scented by thick stands of eucalyptus trees.
Soak up the quiet, peaceful atmosphere of the forest, emerging at point to viewpoints that look out across the picturesque villages that surround Funchal and Camacha.
Your walking tour comes to an end at the historic village of Camacha, known for traditional handicrafts and a thriving local culture. Finish the morning with return transfer to Funchal, and drop-off at your hotel.

It is a beautiful circular walk …. Couple of levada trips before and you walk and return same route. Christo was great on knowledge re all fauna and flora we saw and also on history of Madeira.
I really enjoyed this walk. It was a refreshing break from the hot Madeiran sun that I’d had a little too much of. It was a nice easy walk with an interesting guide, through a lovely cool fresh air filled levada trail. Was very interesting to hear how the levadas work and hear about the various flora and fauna. Would recommend for a pleasant half day tour.
Don’t wear white trainers though! It’s very dusty.
Great walk just over 3 miles, was very easy and flat. Was told to pack jacket and drinks but no need as weather was warm and stopped at a little bar half way.
Was picked up at 8.30 walk started at 9. Was back at hotel at 12.30. Tour guide very knowledgeable about area and plants.
Lovely Medium Walk with Coffee and Comfort Break half way. Pedro our Driver was friendly and kept us safe. Our walking guide was fine.
A very easy flat walk...no issues with any extreme drops or rugged paths. Patricia our guide was informative and friendly.
A walk in nature rather than for stunning views...ideal for anyone as it really was an easy stroll.
I enjoyed this wooded stroll through a bit of the path along a levada. Guide was very cheerful and knowledgeable about the area.
Great guide, pointing out interesting flora and sights along this east levada walk! Highly recommended
Learning about the real Madeira, flora and fauna from a very informative and charming guide. She created a great atmosphere and the kilometres slipped by in a fun and effortless way.
Our guide, Ruby, was knowledgeable and informative. The pace of the walk was reasonable. I really enjoyed it.
Leisurely stroll through flower filled picturesque woodland, a real forest bathing experience. Not a strenuous or long walk, a good starter walk for anyone not used to long walks and there are no steps to navigate. The guide was very informative and they pointed out local flora and fauna.
A wonderful tour. Our guide was really knowledgeable and informative on the flora and fauna of the lavada. A very relaxed and enjoyable walk. One for the whole family.
A lot of rain. This path is nod designed to walk in rainy season. Check the weather a couple of days before. When rainy no ane views, your shoes will be full of water and you may get sick.
Really enjoyable walk & Charlotte was a very knowledgeable & informative. The scenery was beautiful too!
Excellent tour yesterday with a very knowledgeable guide. Really worth the trip, very enjoyable. Thank you
Pleasurable easy going walk in a group of 6. Collected from our hotel on time. Guide & driver both very friendly. Useful information given to us along the walk. Nice café stop too.
Really great experience. Lovely pace of walk . Ruby was a great guide and every question asked Ruby could answer.
Nothing stand out but guide was good and the walk nice and easy. Could have done with a little more wildlife on the journey
Great guide.lovely comfortable walk..not a challenge.unfourtunately the coranavirus put pay to the coffee stop ..but overall a lovely half day trip..enjoyed the flora and fauna ..would definitely recommend
My partner and I decided that we wanted to do a levada walk before leaving Madeira and so we were limited on options due to only having a half day on the morning before we flew home so booked this tour.
No water running in the levada which is fine but the guide wouldn't stop talking and he was so loud so it was hardly a relaxing walk especially given he did his talk in both english and german.
Super flat walk so suitable for all ages and walking capabilities with a nice cafe stop about halfway. Stopped again on the way home at the wicker basket store/factory however we didn't go inside as this didn't interest us.
If I had more time I would probably choose a different tour next time.
My partner and I were collected from our hotel in Funchal by our guide and her driver. In total we were a small group of seven, a German couple, and a Norwegian lady and her 3 daughters. We chose this particular Levada walk as the publicity said it was fairly flat and easy and my partner has MS and sometimes has mobility issues. We needn’t have worried, she had no problems and it was just as described. That is not to say it wasn’t interesting or lovely! It was about three and a half hours walking at a fairly gentle pace, with a few stops en route to admire the flora and surroundings. There was also a cafe and restroom stop after a couple of hours. Our guide was lovely, very interesting and informative but also extremely caring to make sure everyone was always ok!
Would really recommend if you are looking for a lovely walk that is not too challenging!
