Our experience with Viator was excellent. From preliminary details, communicating on text, picking us up and taking us on the journey were all flawless. In addition to taking us to the marble tour, Marco took us to an amazing lunch at a very local restaurant with some of the top food in Italy so far!!

Our guide was knowledgeable and friendly. The marble cave wad extremely interesting. Our drive was beautiful and lunch with local delicacies was delicious and the view breathtaking.

An excursion of a lifetime! Our new friend, Thomaso, our driver and guide, was informational and engaging!
Everything from the start was seamless.
The drive over seemed to take very little time because he engaged with all of the passengers on the tour.
Once we arrived at Carrara, we took a 4 wheel drive into the cave. At that point Francesca , one of the members of the family who mine the marble, gave an amazing discussion of the process required to extract huge blocks of marble from the only internal mines in Carrara.
After the tour we drove up to the city of Colonnada. We enjoyed a fun luncheon with lardo, meats, wine and bread.
A fantastic day that we all highly recommend.

This tour was fabulous. The guide was knowledgeable, friendly, and easy to understand. The site itself, the history, and the techniques used I'll be talking about for a long time.

Truly a one of a kind experience. The cave tour was amazing as you could see everything they do and you are surrounded by marble. Thomaso provided an informative and fun filled van ride. We loved our lunch at a small village restaurant. It was an amazing day.

It would be impossible to have had a better experience on our tour of the Carrera marble Quarry. Tomaso could not have been more knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly. We learned a lot about the quarry, the area and even his insights into Italy itself. He then took us to a small village called Colonata where we had a wonderful lunch of Lardo and other meats, cheeses and pasta. He took his time with us, didn’t hurry and even stopped into a special bakery on the way back to Lucca. An absolutely fantastic day and one that we would absolutely recommend.

Rafaelle was the perfect guide on this tour, sharing insightful and informative commentary about the surroundings, history and culture of the Tuscany region. The small group (6 of us) was a great size, although we did form a larger group inside the amazing Carrara marble cave which was led by an employee of the marble quarry (the sensational Sonia). Great to learn about the marble quarry process in general and to visit this quarry that only extracts marble for artwork purposes.
We also visited the village of Colonnata and tried their famous lardo di colonnata.
Rafaelle was engaging, professional and an overall nice guy. Thanks for the personal recommendations back in Lucca. Grazie mille 🙏

The marble cave was absolutely stunning. It was really interesting to hear how the marble is cut out and removed and the care that is taken in making sure there are strong columns to support it. The lunch is Colonnata was great fun. The village is lovely.

I am a sculpture so for me it was like being in haven ( i am not a religious person). It was very beautiful and interesting from different point of views ( geographic , historical, etc ) for me and my wife.
I am already planning to come back for the sculpting matters

So emotional, thanks!

Tommaso was a terrific guide all the way from Lucca to Carrera! The cave tour was awesome and then Tommaso took us up to have some “Lardo” at the small town of Collanata. It was a great day and worth it!

Highly recommended! Raffaele was knowledgeable about the region and told us lots of fun stories about Tuscany. He sent a message to confirm the day before the tour, then came to pick us up in his comfortable, air-conditioned van on the day of. We had a fantastic time at the marble quarry along with a lunch at a small village where we tried the lardo de colonata. The lardo surpassed my expectations -- delicious and fragrant and velvety soft like ham -- not like lard at all! The marble quarry tour was unforgettable, and Raffaele made it a fantastic experience.

Thanks for making our day! We’re so glad you enjoyed your visit.

Our tour was incredible. I am a stone carver sculptor myself so this tour meant so much to me. Having the rare access inside the cave of marble in Carrera, in the heart of the mountain, was spectacular. Our tour guide was very accommodating and made special concessions for our wants and needs and custom tailored the tour for us. I highly recommend this experience.
Response from Host, Dec 2024
Love the "pilgrimage" definition :)
Dena_W, Jun 2023
Rafaelle was terrific! He shared local history throughout the drive and his knowledge of the region is exceptional. The informative cave marble technique was exceptional and as a bonus was a cool break from the heat. Our tour was beyond perfect, as Rafaelle even spent time taking us to Pietrasanta, explaining its continuing contribution to the art of sculpture today. It was a great experience and we plan to use this company again and again as discover Tuscany!
Response from Host, Jun 2023
Oh Dena!
We wait for you :)

This activity was really really interresting. You see marble quarries from outside but getting in the hearth of a marble mountain, see that marble cave and with people still working in it is really impressive. Honestly one of the highlight of our trip
Also Tomasso is a great guy that is also a good driver and guide. It was easy to make contact with him and settle all the details by mail. He was really helpful finding solutions we didn't thought about. His english is excellent and his knowledge of the region is a great plus to learn about it on the way.
We highly recommend this activity!
Response from Host, May 2023
Ciao Martin!
My pleasure to meet such special people as you!
