Overview

Eating well in East London means knowing which spots locals rate and which are tourist traps, hard to judge as a visitor. This small-group food tour does the sorting, walking you between Spitalfields, Brick Lane, and Shoreditch for a run of tastings: a warm crumble, Brick Lane curry, freshly baked bagels, and fish and chips among them. A guide covers the area's mix of cultures as you eat your way through.
  • Learn about east London's multicultural cuisine and history
  • Skip tourist traps to eat at the places that Londoners love
  • Enjoy enough samples to add up to a generous lunch

Had such a fantastic time on the Eating Europe East End London Food Tour! 🇬🇧🍴 My family and I loved learning about the rich history of the East End while stopping along the way to try a variety of incredible foods. It was the perfect mix of culture, storytelling, and delicious bites. Our guide, Max, made the experience even better—super informative and genuinely funny. He kept the whole group engaged and laughing while sharing fascinating stories about the neighborhood. If you’re visiting London and want a fun (and tasty) way to explore the East End, I highly recommend this tour!

Katie_G, Feb 2026
Our guide Niall was FANTASTIC! He was funny, knowledgeable, and a true foodie. Pretty much everything you could want from a food tour guide! The places we went were out of the way and felt like authentic London spots. Niall also showed us historic places along our route, which was a nice added bonus. All the food was great, we were honestly sad we booked this towards the end of our trip because we would have loved to revisit some of the spots we went! I cannot recommend Eating Europe, or Niall, enough! We will be booking with them during our next trip for sure. Highly recommend!

Response from Host, Feb 2026

Well, the solution is simple I guess... you'll have to come back! We'd be thrilled to have you on another of our London tours soon. We really appreciate the recommendation. We work hard to only select the very best guides, and it's lovely to hear that Niall made this tour so special for you. See you on the next one, Katie!

Great way to experience the East End

Nicole_E, Nov 2025
Max was so great and really gave us a locals perspective on the east end and how its immigrant history impacted everything from the architecture to the food. Every one of the food stops was incredible and Max made us all feel comfortable and—in the end—extremely full.

Response from Host, Nov 2025

Thanks for taking a moment to leave such a kind review, Nicole. Our guides are always local to each of our cities!

While it’s a good tour...

andrea, Sep 2025
While it’s a good tour (mix of history and food), the food stops did not completely match the description. Not sure if that’s because the tour operator moved the tour up an hour (which may have changed availability) or the description is outdated. If you are looking for specific food experiences, you may want to confirm the itinerary.

Response from Host, Sep 2025

Thank you Andrea for your feedback. Although we try to provide a representative itinerary of the vendors we visit, on some departures, we may have to visit different vendors than advertised. However, rest assured that these vendors will always be of great quality and represent the area's culinary history. We hope to welcome you on another Eating Europe food tour in the future - we're in over 18 cities across Europe!

So good we did it twice

Jennifer_Z, Sep 2025

Did not like the location...

Michelle_D, Jul 2025
Did not like the location and the food was meh. Don’t appreciate the constant follow up for a review either.

Response from Host, Jul 2025

Hi Michelle, We were surprised to see your review, as our records show that you didn’t attend the tour yesterday. We completely respect personal preferences when it comes to food and location — but it’s disappointing to receive a negative review from someone who didn’t experience the tour firsthand. Feedback is incredibly important to us, but it’s only truly helpful (and fair to our guides and future guests) when it reflects the actual experience. As for the review request, we send out a single, automated email after the scheduled tour time — simply to give guests the opportunity to share their thoughts if they joined us. If you believe there’s been a mix-up or if you attended on a different date, we’d be happy to look into it further.

Arrive Hungry!

Jennifer_V, Jul 2025
Do this tour at the beginning of your trip because you are going to work to go back to these places to eat while you are in London. The tour takes place in East London, which is an area that you may not visit on your own. Max was our guide, and he was awesome! He was knowledgeable, personable, very accommodating and animated. We are vegetarians and he accommodated our dietary restrictions at each stop. There was so much food on this tour. It was definitely more than a tasting! You definitely had an opportunity to eat food from different cultures. It was awesome and there wasn’t anything bad at any of the stops. Also, the tour starts and ends in Old Spitalfields Market-a great place to browse before/after the tour.

Response from Host, Jul 2025

We couldn't agree more Jennifer - our food tours are the perfect introductory activity on a trip as our expert guides give recommendations for your trip, and you can enjoy the food on the tour multiple times! Our tours always try to cater to dietary requirements as much as possible. We love to hear that you enjoyed your Brick Lane, Shoreditch and Spitalfields food tour with Max!

3hrs looking at empty bldgs in the sun while being talked at, punctuated by some food, with a dollop of historical facts

Kati_C, Jun 2025
Fair warning - this isn’t going to be the most positive review. But take it with a grain of salt. There were five other people on the tour with us and for all I know it was the best food tour they've ever been on. So what follows is 100% entirely our own (mostly) subjective experience. Pros: - The food IS good - the locations that were chosen provided generous portions, and were utterly delicious. - The five other people on the tour with us were very friendly, and I genuinely enjoyed their company. Cons - first to say I feel genuinely uncomfortable providing a less-than-stellar review, especially of an individual. If I’d been the only one with the negative experience, I’d just keep it to myself. But more than one person in my party clocked some uncomfortable, “did he just say that?!” moments…so hopefully this is a learning experience: - it was SO hot out, and we were kept in the sun (vice shade) for the better part of our three hour-ish tour…without access to water. There were two times my knees started to buckle, which has never happened in my life. I had to leave the tour to pop into a store and buy water for me + party members. - about 85% of the three hours consisted of being talked at…about buildings. And while there is absolutely value in learning about architectural history, we’d already been on four London history tours - so almost all of the information was redundant, and to be honest I’d wanted - and expected from the description - this to be a tour ABOUT FOOD. I wanted to soak in a culinary experience through time - not just eating but learning as well…about food. Not empty buildings. - Five things that offended me, and continued to offend me after reflecting on whether I was being unreasonable (and please feel free to disagree, judge, criticize, or call me any kind of name you wish…it won’t change my personal experience or how I felt, but you do you): 1) The tour guide mistaking my 10yo child’s name for “Maggot”, and saying it out loud…more than once. I could feeeel the confusion and hurt my child felt, not totally understanding why they were being called “Maggot” and internalizing the experience. Ugh. Worst. 2) When discussing a particular piece of art by a female artist - one in which she wrote the names of all her intimate partners on the inside of a tent - our tour guide made the comment “and it was a BIG tent”. Harmless? Maybe. I couldn’t stop thinking “what on earth was the point in saying that? What value is there, insinuating to a group of strangers - and children - that the number of partners a highly regarded artist had was somehow unseemly?” If there’d been some kind of discussion around self awareness of behavioral patterns, or freedom of expression through sexual agency, or capturing the zeitgeist of a generation rebelling against oppression…I mean, agree or disagree, THAT has value. That comment made me feel ashamed, sad, uncomfortable and angry - and it had no place on a food tour. 3) Our tour guide making multiple derogatory “oh it’s all in good fun” digs at my families’ nationality. That was delightful and not at all alienating. 4) Our tour guide going into unnecessary, graphic detail about the tools used for beheadings and how they were specially constructed to hack through the sinew, tendons, muscle and bones of the neck…and KEPT GOING after I announced “well I’m not hungry anymore!” Not everyone enjoys discussing violence, or having those kinds of images in their brain…especially on A FOOD TOUR. 5) When talking about the soup kitchen in the Jewish community, stating that a) “the Jews wanted to make it a proud community building, to let the English know they weren’t here to steal their economic opportunities; that they wanted to be valuable members of society”; and b) “bigger families would get bigger portions of food from the soup kitchen, so Jews would borrow other people’s kids to get more food”…not knowing how our tour guide feels about the Jewish community - I mean who knows, he could’ve been Jewish himself - I literally cringed at the “greedy Jew” tropes my (Jewish) children were hearing, and had to provide context for them, vs. just letting those statement hang in the air on their own. Our people are not inherently greedy, and we don’t exist to burden anyone - let alone entire economies, and to purposefully explain out loud that isn’t the intention of Jewish immigrants only serves to validate and perpetuate those awful stereotypes. By the end of the tour, I felt uncomfortable as a woman, as a Jew, as a mother, and as an American…alongside a bit of dehydration and heat stroke. Do I think our tour guide was intentionally offensive? No. Did it happen anyway? Yup. Am I a sensitive woke snowflake? Perhaps. But do I - along with every other human being - deserve to be treated with respect, particularly when shelling out over £500 for a food-centered walking tour in a foreign country? Unequivocally. Take it with a grain of salt - this was just my personal experience, and subjective review.

Response from Host, Jul 2025

Hi Kati, Thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed review. While we’re really sorry to hear the tour didn’t meet your expectations, we genuinely appreciate your honesty and the care you took in explaining your experience. We’re glad to hear you enjoyed the food and the company of the other guests — that truly means a lot. At the same time, we’re very sorry to hear about the aspects of the tour that left you feeling uncomfortable. The heat and limited water access are completely valid concerns, and we understand how that could impact your overall experience. Our guide did try to keep the group in shaded areas whenever possible and offered to buy water for the group on several occasions — including providing water after the curry stop at Aladdin when they noticed a guest coughing — but we recognise that more structured hydration and comfort breaks could have helped. We're reviewing how we manage this, particularly during hotter weather. Your point about wanting a more culinary-focused experience is also completely fair. We’re taking a closer look at how we describe the tour and working with our team to make sure we strike the right balance between food, history, and cultural context — especially for guests who are primarily there for the culinary highlights. Regarding the comments made during the tour, we appreciate you raising this. After speaking with our guide, it’s clear that no offence was meant or intended. That said, we completely understand how tone and phrasing can be perceived differently, and your feedback is a helpful reminder of how important sensitivity is — especially in groups with families and children. We’ll be following up internally to ensure all guests feel comfortable and respected throughout the experience. Thanks again for sharing your perspective. We're sorry this experience didn’t meet your expectations, and we truly hope the rest of your time in London was more enjoyable. Warmly, The Eating Europe Team

History with amazing food hits the spot!

Summer_N, Jun 2025
The history was so interesting and amazing. We learned so much. The food was so good. We were able to experience so much and left so full. Had a great day and our four young children enjoyed it just as much as we did if not more!

Nelly_H, Jun 2025
Sampled a nice variety of foods while walking through the vibrant Spittlefields and Brick road areas. Our guide was pleasant but not that engaging. Overall portions were reasonable but the fish and chips portion was very small. I did a similar tour of SoHo that cost a little less and included alcohol. This one did not include alcohol but cost a little more. I feel it could have included some more food samplings for the amount paid.

Response from Host, Jun 2025

Thank you for your feedback Nelly. On our Brick Lane Shoreditch and Spitalfields food tour, we enjoy six tastings, including 3 curries, fish and chips, salt beef beigels, a Chinese custard tart and delicious cinnamon apple crumble. This tour is all about highlighting the cuisines and communities of London's East End, which is why we enjoy drinks such as mango lassis. On the other hand, Soho is an area of London associated with nightlife, which is why you are more likely to enjoy alcohol on a food tour in that area. Our guide are the best of the best, and are trained to engage with every member of the tour group throughout. If you have any further queries about your experience on this tour, you can email us (laine@eatingeurope.com).

Brick Lane, Shoreditch & Spitalfields Food Walking Tour – A Feast of Flavors and Stories

Douglas_M, Jun 2025
We had a fantastic time on the Brick Lane, Shoreditch, and Spitalfields Food Walking Tour with our guide, Katie. She was everything you’d want in a host—friendly, warm, and full of that dry British wit that kept us smiling the whole way through. Katie brought the neighborhoods to life with her local anecdotes and thoughtful insights, weaving in history and humor with ease. The food was excellent and wonderfully varied. We sampled a crispy croque monsieur, a delicate Portuguese egg custard, classic fish and chips, rich and flavorful curries, and finished off with a comforting serving of humble crumble. Each stop had something different to offer, and Katie gave context to every bite, making the experience feel both indulgent and educational. The group was small—just ten of us, mostly fellow Americans—which made it easy to chat and share the experience. The pace was comfortable, but do wear good walking shoes; there’s plenty of ground covered, from bustling Brick Lane to tucked-away corners of Spitalfields. All in all, a perfect blend of food, culture, and personality. Highly recommended for anyone wanting to taste their way through East London with a knowledgeable and personable guide.

Response from Host, Jun 2025

Thank you so much for this wonderful and detailed review! We’re delighted to hear that Katie’s warm personality and witty storytelling brought Brick Lane, Shoreditch, and Spitalfields to life for you. It sounds like you truly savored the variety of flavors—from the crispy croque monsieur to the comforting crumble—and appreciated the rich history woven into every stop. We also love that the small group size made for a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Thanks so much for the recommendation, and we hope to welcome you back for another delicious adventure soon!
