This tour was super fun! All steps of the chocolate process were experiences (all to the soundtrack of howler monkeys!). My family particularly enjoyed the “design your own specialty chocolate blends!” The guides were fun and knew their stuff! Would definitely do this tour again!

It was an absolutely lovely time and our guide was sarcastic and funny, he made the experience better. It’s funny because I was actually going to go with a different chocolate tour that was more intimate but because of logistics decided on this one, lo and behold we only had 11 people in our tour! Worked out perfectly and I booked the 1 P.M slot on a Wednesday for anyone wondering.

Grexel was the most enthusiastic guide, we loved her! She and her team showed us how cocao turns to chocolate in all its various stages (including tastings at each stage). It was super fun and cool to learn the process and we were full from all the chocolate we ate!

Taking a chocolate tour in Costa Rica was an amazing and educational experience. From the very beginning, we learned about the history of cacao and its importance in Costa Rican culture, especially for indigenous communities.
The guide explained the entire process of making chocolate, from planting and harvesting the cacao beans to drying, roasting, and grinding them. One of the most exciting parts was being able to participate hands-on and make chocolate ourselves.
We also had the opportunity to taste fresh cacao and different types of chocolate, which was delicious. The tour took place in a beautiful natural setting, surrounded by rainforest, making the experience even more special.
Overall, the chocolate tour was fun, informative, and perfect for all ages. It was a unique way to learn about Costa Rica’s traditions while enjoying one of its most famous products.

We definitely recommend to book this activity when in La Fortuna, they will explain you the history of chocolate, the process and then the best part, try chocolate with different combinations. It’s a great activity to do! Worth the money!

Amazing host. This was one of the better tours we had in Costa Rica. The host was very informative, engaging and entertaining.

We were a family of 4 adults and were all very disappointed by this tour. It was more suited to families with young kids. There are many reviews on it being ‘entertaining’ but it our opinion the comedy just dragged out the experience to 2 hours when the content could have been delivered in 30 minutes.
The tour is 10 minutes walking around the cacao trees and then sitting in a covered area while the chocolate making process was done. The tasting is melted chocolate with toppings of your choice. We’ve been on far better chocolate tours.

Thanks for let us know. Sorry that it wasn't for you. We appreciate your visit, and making time to share about it.

We had a great time. This is a must do activity rain or shine! We booked this tour for 8 am and it was just the two of us plus another couple. It made for a very special experience. I definitely recommend!

You get to do lots of tasting of 100% cocoa chocolate which can be bitter.
It was really informative and our guide was super fun.

Great experience! Our tour guide, Keilor was very informative and entertaining. We learned a lot about the process of producing chocolate and got to taste along the way!
Angela_K, Jul 2025
Kids said this was the best part of la Fortuna! Of course we all loved eating as much chocolate as we could, but we also learned a lot and were thoroughly entertained by Keyllor and Tom! Thank you for a fantastic experience.
Christina_M, Jul 2025
History of chocolate making, going through a step by step process. Eating and creating as much chocolate delights as you want.
kim_p, Jun 2025
There is a history lecture about the discovery and harvesting of chocolate before any tasting. There is some interactive fun during the lecture but it’s a little long, especially for smaller children. Staff knowledgeable and friendly.
The Chocolate tasting was fun .
This is not a walking tour but bring bug spray because it’s outside. There is a very small gift shop that sells some chocolate and a few T-shirts.

This was a great activity for a rainy day! There was so much to learn about chocolate! It was educational and so much fun! Roberto our guide was witty and made the tour so fun! We got to taste chocolate with various spices and toppings at the end. They also had a great store with reasonably priced chocolate from a variety of local brands!
Rachel_P, Apr 2025
The rainforest chocolate tour was amazing! I learned so much about the process of making chocolate. It was fascinating to be able to try the cacao beans in all the different stages from raw, to roasted, to ground up with sugar added. The tour guides did a wonderful job of explaining the history of cacao in Central America and explaining and demonstrating how the beans are processed. And, of course, I loved that we were allowed to eat so much chocolate! I definitely recommend the sea salt with the chocolate and I highly recommend this tour. It was fun and informative.

This was hands down my favorite tour in Costa Rica. The guide was funny, knowledgable, and entertaining. We learned so much about the making of chocolate and saw every step. Loved the interactive parts. Chocolate tasting at the end was so fun. Would highly recommend. It is just minutes from downtown La Fortuna. My kids are 9 and 10 and they loved it.

It was nice to see the chocolate process and we really enjoyed the samples. We didn't find the sloth, but we did see an agouti.

Thanks for your review!

Tatiana was a fantastic guide on this experience! We experienced every stage of the chocolate making process, from the tiny flower to the final delicious product. Tatiana made sure each guest was comfortable and answered every question with ease. She encouraged participation in the breaking of the cocoa pod, the separation of the hull from the bean, and even the grinding of the roasted beans with sugar. There were unlimited samples of cups of the warm chocolate beverage (with added spices as requested) and spoons of melted chocolate (with added spices and toppings). This was a great way to spend a few rainy hours in Costa Rica!

We love when you made part of the program! So happy you enjoyed the visit!

Our group had a nice tour when we came here to visit in La Fortuna. Our tour guide went by the name Excel Which I’m sure is not spelled correctly so I do apologize, but I do remember her referencing the Microsoft program. She was energetic, spunky, fun and humorous, and definitely made the tour vivacious. The Kakao experience itself was phenomenal, and the chocolate tasted great.
Response from Host, Apr 2025
Thanks for your visit! Pura vida, Gexel is a wonderful guide!
Susan_B, Mar 2025
Our tour guide was entertaining and knowledgeable. We got to experience the whole process and sampled the chocolate.
martin_c, Mar 2025
Fun and informative, I did this trip with my family of 5- 3 teenagers and we all had fun. We learnt about history and the processes involved on this tour through the plantation. We went in February and did not notice any mosquitos. Chocolate tasting was at the end was a high light although I could have eaten more! (it was not actually unlimited!)
David_L, Feb 2025
This tour is very small, and shows the original way of making chocolate. Tour guide was knowledgeable and friendly
