    Itinerary

The afternoon adventure begins with pickup at your La Fortuna hotel and a 45-minute drive to Arenal Volcano National Park. Arrive at the Arenal Observatory Lodge & Spa, a beautifully landscaped resort that was originally built as a scientific research station and offers commanding views of the nearby volcano and Arenal Lake.

After this panoramic perspective, get a closer look at the area’s flora and fauna with a hike through the surrounding gardens and rain forest. Along the guided trek, pass two hanging bridges and admire the flowing currents of the Danta River and a tropical waterfall. Learn about the area’s diverse ecosystem and fascinating geologic history from your guide, who will help you spot native wildlife such as monkeys, exotic birds, and red-eyed tree frogs. Back at the lodge, dig even deeper into the ancient history of the volcano at the Arenal Observatory Museum, and watch a memorable sunset over Lake Arenal from the viewing deck.

Finish the day with pura vida–style relaxation courtesy of a soak and swim in a naturally heated river pool. Detox with a volcanic mud facial if you wish, and unwind with a cocktail. After about an hour here, return to your La Fortuna hotel in the evening.

This was a great experience and our guide Christian, was awesome. He was kind, funny, and pointed out so many different insects, plants and animals along the way. He captured photos of our family as well as through his scope for a close up view of small frogs and snakes. The hanging bridges provided great views and we even got to see a waterfall. I would highly recommend this company.

Great time - guide Rasta was the best.

    Daniel_C, Jan 2026
We had Rasta (Juan) as our guide. He was very knowledgeable and funny. We had a great time. Not a stressful walk / hike. (But the bridges to bounce a bit - so if you are afraid of heights or are not comfortable on an otherwise completely safe suspension bridge, then maybe this is not for you.)

Guide Chris told us we had to walk for 2.5 hours to reach the hanging bridges. Also 6 of us booked a tour with a mud facial and he said that isn't included. We cancelled after being driven so far and got a refund. Guide was arguing about it.

    Great Experience!

Best experience we had in La Fortuna!

My boyfriend and I did this tour our first day in La Fortuna. Chris RQ was our tour guide and he was amazing!! We added on the second part of the tour and had such a fun time and saw so many animals we wouldn’t have seen on our own. Chris also went above and beyond to spot a sloth for me- we saw one hanging in a tree. :) My favorite part of our visit!!

It was lots of fun, the bridges I was initially scared about but I am so glad we did. Our tour guide was very nice and helped us with the miscommunication with the viator about the waterfall. He made sure we were taken care of and contacted the right people to get the waterfall experience figured out. The owner Bebo or vivo made sure to get us to the second part and was very apologetic for the mix up. Melonie took us on the second part through the waterfall which was a huge hike and took us to see the native villlagers. I didn't give it a 5 because there was way too many in our party. 16 people per group was way too much. We moved too fast and it was hard to hear everything kind of felt like a cattle drive at times. But the guides were absolutely amazing and the it was pretty cool with all the bridges and everything we saw.

    Amazing

This was so much fun! The bridges are very wobbly so keep that in mind. The views are amazing! Lunch was great and the hot springs was so soothing!

Fun activities BUT pick the Red Lava Tour that Includes La Fortuna Waterfall

    Richard_N, Mar 2024
Hiking the Mistco Hanging Bridges was easy and fun. Walking across the bridges and the views seen were awesome. The tour guides were also full of energy and knowledge. The pineapple snack before the "volcano hike" was sweet. The volcano hike was okay, but it did allow everyone more time to get to know each other. Lunch was tasty, and by lunch, we all became a group of friends. After lunch the group was split between those who paid extra for La Fortuna Waterfalls and those who did not (this tour). Those who didn't pay for the waterfall segment would have an extra hour at the hot springs. But we were convinced by everyone going on the waterfall segment to pay extra for the add on, which we did. It turned out to be the best decision. Swimming in the waterfall turned out to be the highlight of our day. Afterwards we spent an hour at a somewhat crowded hot springs, but the water was soothing after a long day of hiking. It was a great day with good conversation with new friends. Recommendation: Do the tour by Red Lava that has all these activities BUT also includes La Fortuna Waterfall. It's a but more money but well worth it!

    Absolutely worth it!

Guide was great. Glad we used a guide rather than on our own as he provided many interesting facts and other information that we wouldn’t have received otherwise. He was also good at spotting animals that we totally would have missed.

The guide was great and very engaging. The hike was beautiful and gave an excellent view of the lake and the volcano. The thermal springs were fine but maybe aimed to an older audience if you have kids.

    William was incredible!

    Samantha_W, Feb 2020
Our tour guide, William, was incredible! He was so knowledgable and his personality and the way he presented information was great. We saw so many animals and learned so much! I thought this experience was a perfect balance of easy hiking (1-2 hours) and relaxing in the natural hot springs. Highly recommend this experience, especially with William.

The best thing to do in La Fortuna

    elizabethlwiley, Jan 2020
Be ready and in condition to hike. Very knowledgeable people. Bug spray yourself down and bring more just in case. Bring swimsuit and towel as well. Also, bring small colones to tip. The hot springs at the end was great for sure muscles. Well done and beautiful!

    Excellent tour

    All round great tour

    afslater, Jan 2020
Eric was brilliant at guiding us through the trails surround the Arenal Observatory. His knowledge of the area was fantastic, and it was obvious he cared about what he did. Loved the visit to the hotspring, and the generous portions of cocktails served as part of the experience.

Fabulous Guide- the tour corrdinator was very accommodating, allowed us to leave our vehicle at the last spot so we had to option to leave early or stay longer. Enjoyed the day!

Low key tour for learning about rain forest and Arenal.

    Anna_S, Sep 2019
Excellent tour. Was our first tour of trip so was a great orientation of rain forest. Easy hike on paved ground and very informative. I usually like more physical activities but it was worth taking time to learn details of the rain forest. Ending in hot springs was also fun, although crowded and a popular stop for tour groups. Tour guide excellent.

    Great tour!!

Had the best time with our tour guide Carlos!! He showed us many plant and animals species. He was quite knowledgeable and loved to educate. We saw plenty of monkeys, toucans and frogs. By far the most enjoyable experience was relaxing in the warm river with drinks in our hands!!! Would do it all over again.

    Good

I loved this tour with Red Lava Tours. It was 100 worth the money. We were lucky to have a clear view of the volcano. The trip to the waterfall afterwards was fun do go into the waterfall!!! It's not that cold, but I'd recommend bringing a good towel and maybe a light sweater to wear afterwards. But the highlight was the hot thermal river at the end, with the provided drink. Magical!!

Danny was the best tour guide ever. Made the experience even better. It started pouring very hard so we were not able to go to the hot springs but red lava was very accommodating and let us go the next day.

A nice fairly short tour which takes in some of the views from the Arenal Observatory and an informative guided walk through the gardens and national park. Our guide William was very knowledgeable and provided an interesting insight into the ecology, flora and fauna of the area. The trip ends in the hot springs which are ok but not great. Unfortunately for us the rain and the low cloud obscured the views of Mnt Arenal itself but it was an interesting trip none the less.

    Magnifique

    Frdrick_L, Feb 2020
Notre guide Waler etait excellent, expliquait bien et lentement, il parlait avec tout le monde. Il n était pressé, on avait le temps de tout faire a notre aise !!! Notre après etait tout simplement magnifique surtout la finale dans les bains thermal.
