This is a must-do for any wine lover visiting the island! Manuel was our guide and absolutely wonderful! He got to our hotel early to pick us up and shared great knowledge about the area with us on the drive. We stopped in a cute fishing town to see Winston Churchill’s church and then at the highest cliff for some beautiful pictures of the island - both stops were well worth it! Then we headed to Barbusana for a quick vineyard tour (it was cold and muddy) with a small group before joining the host inside for the tasting. We had 3 reds, 1 rose, and 2 reds (all were delicious!) alongside a small meat and cheese tray. The host at the vineyard was incredibly knowledgeable on the vineyard and how they grow grapes in Portugal and it was great to learn from her. The highlight of the trip was Manuel - he was so fun and knowledgable. We would definitely book another trip with him when back in the area. Tips: bring 3 euros per person to visit the cliff and comfy shoes (that you don’t mind if they get dirty).

Fantastic driver,very friendly, punctual & informative. Just 4 of us on the morning tour which was great,ideal time before tours staying for lunch arrive. No rush at the vineyard, could help ourselves after the tastings to as much from the 6 bottles,small tasting board of cheese/ham,not tapas. Recommend good way to spend a morning.

Long drive from Dreams Resort

Travel time from Dreams Resort took over 1-3/4 hours to winery which included pickup of another 2 people on the way. The winery tour itself was good, but nothing exceptional.

Thank you for your feedback! We normally don’t offer pickups from Caniçal due to the distance, but we made an exception so you could enjoy the experience. This did extend the travel time, but we hope it was worth it and that you still enjoyed discovering a special part of Madeira’s wine culture.

Great time, but missed a stop

The winery was beautiful, but note that on Madeira the "wineries" only grow the grapes. They all send them to a central facility to be pressed, fermented and bottled, so there are no wine making operations to see. Tasted 6 wines with cheese, toasts, and cured meats, and were invited to spend as much time as we wanted after the tasting to sit, pour another glass of any we tasted and enjoy the scenery. We didn't have any control over the pacing of the winery tour. After the last tasting was poured and we got back in the van it, was about 25 minutes later than the driver originally recommended. We got to Cabo Girao which was fortunately not crowded, spent 15-20 minutes checking out the views and glass floor over the cliff. Got back to the van ready to see the last planned stop at Cabo da Roca, but the driver announced "time is up" and brought us back to our hotels. I understand they probably have timing issues if there are later tours to be accommodated, but they really should have made sure the guide at the winery knew our schedule. Better yet, if you are considering this tour, consider doing a winery tour separately from other sight seeing tours. The wineries are all located in very remote areas up very winding roads, and should be enjoyed thoroughly and un-rushed. Many offer a full day with lunch. Also note that there is a difference between "Madeira wine" and "wine made in Madeira". This winery produces regular table wine, not fortified Madeira, so whatever you book, make sure it's the wine and winery type you're specifically interested in.

Great afternoon out

Susannah picked us up at our hotel on time and we drove straight out to the winery. The route was a little windy and the last bit was very bumpy but Susannah coped with all the conditions very well. She was very informative and we learned a lot about the island as she drove. The winery itself was in beautiful countryside. The tour was very well organised. We tried six wines (very little food provided with which to try it and the actual tasting was a little rushed as there was a big party coming in after us). We we’re offered another full glass of any of the 6 wines after, too. After this we went onto the glass bridge and then onto a little fishing village where Churchill apparently painted. The stops here were very brief which suited us. We were home by 6:20 pm after starting out at 2.pm. Good value, interesting tour.

Can’t recommend this tour enough. Suzanna made the trip so fun, knowledgable and informative. She even had a spare coat for me as it gets a little chilly in the mountains! We had a great time, the wine tour was great and Vanda our guide was fab and unlimited wine! We bought some bottles and they were very reasonably priced (10-15€), the village and glass platform were great too. Thank you so much!

One of the best excursions I’ve ever done. Ruben picked us up from the hotel with a lovely bunch of 8 people, was very knowledgeable about the area and was just a great guy to chat to. Drove us up to the beautiful vineyard where we learned so much about the wine making process and finished with a very generous tasting session. Made some stops on the way back to take photos of the beautiful island. Loved this tour!

We had a beautiful day. Our guide was knowledgeable about the area & the wines and she was a great driver. The vineyard was beautiful and there wasn't one wine we didn't love! The only suggestion is to make the tour 30 min or 1 hour longer. We felt a little rushed.

This tour was the best way to start our trip in Madeira. Susanne was an excellent guide showing us around the west side of the island. She shared a lot of information about the agriculture on the island and how it affects their daily life and their history. The highlight was definitely the winery. Not only were the views unlike anything else the wines were delicious. Highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting the island. We truly appreciated the tour by winery staff; and Suzanne for being so helpful and kind and informational.

Okay but not great

The meeting place is a little bit hard to find if you’re coming off of a cruise ship it, I think they need to do a better job giving that the information. The group size was really good. After we did the wine tasting, everybody was very talkative and friendly. Not a surprise. This is not a sweet Madeira fortified wine that we would typically expect. It was a winery, that’s trying to make it in the regular wine business. White wines were not very good. The red ones were a bit better. They give you a meager snack, and yet a lot of wine. They might be a bit more generous with the snack. One thing to note is that you tour the actual Vineyard, which means walking down uneven rocky paths that might be muddy if it’s raining like when we went. Limitations, you might want to skip the tour part or rethink this activity. The driver didn’t say much, we thought perhaps his English was limited. It would be nice if you would get some narration about the island considering he spent quite a bit of time driving you around. The other two stops are pretty short, only about 20 minutes, so you don’t have a lot of time at the Lookout or at the fishing village. Overall, it was OK but I think they could make this better.

Better than what you expect

Different from what I expected, but better! This was not all about the wine. The wine was excellent and the vinyard tour was fun, with the very pleasant and knowledgable hostess Nicolette. What made the whole tour great was the relaxed pace and flexibility to explore sights along the way. Be sure to ask to climb the stairs up to the church tower. Fernando was an excellent driver/guide who was willing to share lots of interesting tidbits along the way. Highly recommende!

Susan was so friendly and Knowledgeable. There wasn’t a single thing she did not know about Madeira and its wines. The vineyard was breathtaking and she took us to two other sites as well which was brilliant. The tasting provided ample wine and left overs.

I was solo on this part of my travel. Manuel was a terrific driver and escort for the tour. The vineyard was wonderful. I was really impressed with the wine...not the sweet Madeira wine that I was expecting. They offer very high quality red, white and dry rose wines at reasonable prices. I've been to Napa many times so I have a good baseline :) This tour is great if you don't want a big bus tour with a lot of people. Very nice and personal attention.

Overpriced experience of a winery in development.

Picked up at 9am, we picked up 2 more people. We filled in time until the wine tour opened at 10am. The vines were only planted in 2006 so it is a very new venture. A muddy track, no sense of making the wine. My mother was unable to walk the muddy track to the vines. So a taste of a few wines and home. Disappointing and expensive!!
