This has a good set of a fixed routes in and around Funchal, but one has to be mindful if using this to try to see everything on a cruise call to this port. If not on a cruise, then this is a very nice setup and you could augment it with the city transit system and taxis and ride shares as needed. The main route does not go near the 2 big botanical gardens up on hillsides with very narrow streets. There is an interlocking route that goes to Cabo Girao. One would have to start very early, take in the high point in Funchal, and quickly move westward on to Camara de Lobos, and also take the short hop to Cabo Girao. The fact that I started a little late and went up to the paid municipal gardens did not allow me enough time to get way out west from Funchal. I would do those things first ... and then see the big gardens, if time allows, before your ship leaves because there are always taxis and rideshares available from the exits to the big hillside and they're not that far from the port, relatively speaking. If your interests are the paid gardens, the sky gondola, and the wicker basket ride, along with the center of town, there might be a lot of the routing that you won't be using. In short, if you are a cruise passenger, really consider what your priorities are. If you are staying for a while, then this is a really nice route system that you could easily augment with other affordable means to get up to the hillside points of interest.

We purchased the Yellow HOHO 3 in 1 Service. Reasonably accessible from the cruise terminal and we were in fact dropped off outside at the end of the trip. In hindsight we did not have time to cover the two main routes having stopped off to take the cable car (there is a stop right next to this). The yellow buses were regular and would quite often stop to enable a photo at a picture point.

The first day of our 3 in 1 tour we had to wait over an hour after we hopped off the bus at the farmer’s market. It was a long wait in a tight location. Once on the bus we enjoyed the audio narrative.

The cruise ships were in town, so the bus had been there 1st and it was nearly full. The 2rd part of the trip to the viewing platform is worth it, it costs 5€ to get on the platform.

I normally do the red bus hop on hop off but choose yellow due to price very disappointed the time table was completely wrong the buses were so irregular therefore you wouldn’t have time in the day to hop off in too many places .. I had the tickets for 5 days after 2 I gave up and got regular buses there was always 3 red buses too 1 yellow.. would not use again

Not worth the money

Could have skipped it even though I usually like the bus to be introduced to the city. But the route is not very convenient, if you want to go back, have to do the whole circle again, plus have to wait for a long time for the next one. Included are: another bus going to Cabo Girao (but can be seen on the West tour), and Blandy’s wine tasting (but it’s only one glass of wine of their choice).

The buses were easy to locate and were clean and maintained. Cabo de Garo was fabulous. We went up to the tallest point in Europe. There was some wait between buses, but plenty of shops and beautiful scenery.

Amazing views of Funchal

The hop on hop off your is a great way to see all of Funchal especially the amazing views all around the island. The bus takes you all around the island taking in the main stops. We booked the 3 in 1 tour which meant that we had the Cabo Girau skywalk stop included. To get to Cabo Girau you need to get off at stop 12 - Camara de Lobos and then wait to get on another bus which will take you to the skywalk. The bus comes at regular intervals and they take a break over lunchtime so take note of the times. Stop 12 is the town of Camara de Lobos which is a quaint little town with fishing boats,restaurants & little cafes so you can spend some time there and then get on the Cabo Girau bus. All in all this was a very pleasant experience and we highly recommend this activity to see amazing views of Funchal.

Wish we'd used local bus services instead

We booked a 48 hour hop on hop off bus pass. To be honest we didn't get our money's worth. We visited the places we wanted to but could easily have gone this using bus local buses for alot cheaper if we had the confidence. The local bus services are really good and easy to use once you get to grips with them. Nothing wrong with the service - buses clean and in time - just not for us.

In Madeira and used the yellow bus hop on/off service over 2 days. On the Fri 1st Mar 2024 we just stayed on the whole circuit and enjoyed it greatly - took about 2 hours. Good sight seeing opportunity and good audio guide too. On the Sat 2nd Mar we were let down in that the bus scheduled we intended to pick up was not showing on the real time map and had not arrived 10 mins after its time and so we presumed it was cancelled. We could not wait an hour for the next bus which was showing on the real time timetable so had to take a taxi to the hotel instead incurring a 15 Euro charge but whilst on our journey saw the yellow bus arriving at the stop - annoying! The tour was booked with Viator.com in the UK before our holiday and the booking process worked well.

The way to get around

We booked with the 5 day pass, it was great to go round Funchal first with the headphones in to listen to the commentary. After that we used it as a drop off service. A quick trip to the Stadium, a trip to Cam. De Lobos ect.

A must do in Madeira!!
