Fanal forest is breathtaking and the journey there is just as fab, the smell of eucalyptus trees on the way there was refreshing and our guide was super lovely and such a funny guy, he made everyone in our group laugh and enjoy our day. I feel terrible I have forgotten our guides name but he told us so much about the area ( it was very clear he cares about the nature and conservation of the area) and was a fantastic driver, I really enjoyed seeing the cows in the road, it's so silly but love them roaming around, obviously there was a visit to a great poncha bar which was good, but the walk around fanal forest was the absolute highlight, I love the outdoors and mud is to be expected and should be treated as a badge of honour after a good walk, whilst there I did see quite a lot of people wearing pristine white clothing which I assume is to get the ethereal photos that are all over socials, a lot of the people seemed surprised that it is quite outdoorsy and muddy up there in the mountains ( there had been quite a lot of rain the previous day) so it did offer some entertainment watching people negotiate the mud whilst we ate our sandwiches, do take layers the weather is very changeable and enjoy the moment whilst you are there one minute it is misty and you can just about see a cow across a field and then the mist clears and there is a beautiful view down to the sea. There are basic toilet facilities up at fanal forest car park so it's not completely wild for those who need to know this. Thank you 'feeling Madeira' I absolutely would do this trip again.
