Punta Sur was great, Mayan Park was not.

    Dan_B, Dec 2025
We booked this tour independently in lieu of taking a cruise excursion. The pros: our guide, Isaac, was very friendly and attentive throughout the day. He was a cautious driver with a new and comfortable vehicle. The visit to the Punta Sur Eco Park was great - a beautiful, uncrowded part of Cozumel where we saw crocs and alligators, climbed the lighthouse (stunning views), and had a beach break at Virgin Beach, including an off shore snorkel experience and a great lunch. The snorkeling was guided and Leo showed us beautiful parts of the reef and we got to see a sea turtle. The cons: the visit to the Mayan Park was the worst type of tourist trap. A lame Mayan dance performance, with tequila, honey and chocolate tastings all with the the unashamed intention of selling you overpriced goods. Be forewarned that the "flavored' tequilas are not tequila at all. Long story short, we enjoyed our day because of our personable guide and the beauty of the Punta Sur Eco Park and lighthouse. that said, I wish the Mayan Park portion of the excursion never happened. It was a waste of precious time and had no redeeming value.

    Please read carefully

The overall tour was a great experience. However, things get dastardly sour quite quick. The whole excursion is tangled by an organized con artist operation. First tell was the vehicle selection, excursion title says "jeep" but that wasn't the case, I'm sure that seeing "suzuki jimny" would persuade you to reconsider. Although we got a great authentic guide "el tio", most places we visited left us with a bad impression. Based on the purchases we made, here's a rundown of things to look out for and research prior to booking or actually visiting. 1. Black coral - el tio called a local friend "calaca" to visit his shop for a meet and greet. We're obviously not black coral nor jewelry experts. The selling pitch describes this item as a rare coral only obtained in Cozumel, however, the overpriced items lead us to further investigate the legitimacy of said products. Turns out black coral is very limited, which is either illegally harvested, a faux product, or an overpriced craft. Although artisinal, you can find many spots selling these "sophisticated" accessories all throughout Cozumel. To spot the real and certified product is the challenge. My advise is to buy the cheapest items ($10s range) for a simple souvenir. Or simply avoid opening your wallet. 2. Otoch mayan experience - this word means "home", nonetheless, you're still just a tourist to them not a guest. Greeted by a dance team presenting a mayan dance began our experience at this stop. Following that, we were invited to capture the unforgettable moment with a picture. We then proceeded to meet Omar, tequila CONnoisseur. Sales pitch turns into story time; tale of the family, product and operation. Also, not being drinkers or experienced tourists, the tequila tasting is quite impressive (or that's what your boozed brain thinks). What Omar described as a genuine Guadalajara liquor (spirits) turned out to be liqueur (cordials), tampered with sweeteners and other ingredients. (hint: Guadalajara is long ways from Cozumel). I hate to admit that we purchased one of their "reserva familiar 12 year old tequila" and were "gifted 3 bottles" of other sugary flavors. When getting ready to pay, they asked us for the flavors we wanted and proceeded to place the paper wrapped bottles in a yellow bag. No chance to look at them after our guide immediately took them to the "jeep". BEWARE this tequila has changed names throughout seasons to avoid being pin pointed. Tequila Reyes El Jefe is not legit. Maybe their next name will be "Bonnie and Clyde tequila añejo" [The overpriced] honey and chocolate tasting was also fantastic. Remember the unforgettable moment capturing? Well, that haunts you for $20 digital or $40 printed and framed. From the Otoch mayan experience, I would advise to collect as many complementary loot as you can (tacos, tequila, tastings, etc). Open your wallet only once you analyze their tourist-priced items and are completely sure you want to make this purchase. AKA, put your AA hat and until you sober up, finalize your decision. 3. Punta sur & Snorkel - this is probably the best of the entire tour. Clean and clear beach with fun snorkeling. Indubitably, it wouldn't be a full Cozumel experience without a final money grabbing visit from local underwater snorkel photographer with subpar pictures package (which was visibly upset I didn't tip him his day's wage). My advise for this last stop is to enjoy the complementary food, activities and beach to the max. Conclusion, we were mesmerized for what Cozumel actually is, not for it's modus operandi. Our experience with el tio was really good, friendly guide. However, we finished our tour upset and questions the islanders' transparency. Please make sure to research before booking as there is little to none access to WiFi once in Cozumel. Keywords: reviews, scam, local guides, tequila. The overall experience couldn't been perfect if only we had been treated with honesty and not just leeched. This shouldn't be the case, as it is supposed to be a relaxing and fun vacation time. However, take these excursions with a grain of salt. Notify your guide if you consent for the pictures they take to be used and uploaded. (Tips: your tip is based on your experience and memories not their frowns and pity stories) I don't condone Karenism (sorry if you're name is Karen, however, I don't think it's fair for my fellow tourists to experience the dark side of Cozumel. Thank you for coming to CozumelTalk

Dear Guest, We greatly appreciate your feedback and are very sorry that you regretted your purchase during your visit to our beautiful island, which we proudly strive to share with our visitors. The tequila we sell is produced in the state of Jalisco, (Guadalajara is a City un the state of Jalisco) as you mentioned, and we bring it from there to share with you. Our guides try to visit the best places in Cozumel so that you have a great experience. Local artisans sell their crafts at prices they deem appropriate, and tourists are never pressured to buy anything. We look forward to your next visit and will simply do what you want, because that's what our tours are all about: letting guests do what they want on their trip. Sincerely Eliot Reyes

Great way to get around the Island with a great guide

    Csongor_S, Nov 2025
We had a great time exploring the island with Claudio, who has a fantastic, outgoing personality, and vast knowledge of the area, which kept us engaged throughout the day. He went the extra mile to make sure that we had everything we needed and that we enjoyed ourselves. We saw many parts of the island, but the highlight probably was the natural beauty of the Punta Sur region with the animals, the mangroves and the beautiful ocean. The tequilla, honey and chocolate presentations were also interesting. Overall we were really happy with what was provided via the booking itself. Thanks again for everything Claudio!

We had an amazing day with our guide David. He was accomodating to our needs and was so knowledgable. The lunch was delicious. We spotted crocs at the lagoon and he personally guided our snorkeling. Perfect day in Cozumel.
