Palancar Reef is one of the most popular snorkeling and scuba diving spots in Cozumel, thanks to its colorful coral, diverse marine life, and excellent visibility. Part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, it’s located off the southwest coast of Cozumel, near Palancar Beach (Playa Palancar).

Palancar Reef features four main areas. Palancar Gardens is ideal for beginner snorkelers and scuba divers, with moderate current and a large coral wall; Palancar Caves has swim-throughs, caves, and canyons; Palancar Bricks is named after a shipwreck carrying bricks; and Palancar Horseshoe is an area of the reef that looks like a giant horseshoe.

Guided boat tours typically depart from the marina in downtown Cozumel or Palancar Beach.

Palancar Reef is home to a wide variety of marine life, including hundreds of species of coral, hawksbill turtles, loggerhead turtles, nurse sharks, white tip reef sharks, parrot fish, trigger fish, groupers, spotted eagle rays, sting rays, splendid toadfish (endemic to Cozumel), moray eels, lobsters, and seahorses.
