It has been classified as a natural reserve since 1974 and is part of the Natura 2000 network because it has been classified as a special conservation zone. The Seven Cities Lagoon is probably the most iconic and recognized natural monument in the Azores. In a region with so many landscapes, the image of the Seven Cities is numerous times chosen to represent or promote the island of São Miguel and the archipelago. Depart from your accommodation and journey along the south coast of São Miguel before heading towards the west side of the island to see one of the 7 wonders of Portugal, the volcanic lakes of sete cidades. From there we will move to the north side of the island to see the beautiful Lagoa do fogo lake. Our Journey continues towards the wonderful waterfalls of Ribeira dos Caldeirões, a very beautiful and quiet Natural Park. Then a stop for a typical Azorean lunch! Finishing Lunch, Furnas Valley is waiting for us to experience its dramatic volcanic landscape. There we can admire the wild viewpoint of the Pico do Ferro for a panoramic view of the valley. Return to the accommodation via the island's north road, and stop at the site of Europe's only tea plantations and tea factory.

Must-do Tour

One of our favorite tours on the island. We saw some gorgeous views and learned a lot of interesting information along the way. The night tour is really worth it to get the views of the steam rising through the streets of Furnas. The cozida do furnas is quite good (definitely bring your appetite) and very fresh.

Full adventure

Had a great time on this tour. Gorgeous views up close and personal with Sete Cidades. Plenty of opportunities to switch drivers if multiple people in one vehicle are of age. The only thing I would do differently is book a taxi back to my hotel as I did not have a rental ahead of time. The owners / tour guides were kind enough to call a taxi service for us, as service on my phone was non-existent at the meeting point.

Absolutely amazing experience viewing Caldeira das Sete Cidades! Although there were dozens of people hiking, there’s no way you could take in all the sights in this area unless you’re doing it by vehicle. The Land Rover was very comfortable and felt safe for the 7 guests. Daniel, the tour guide was knowledgeable about the entire island and asked us what we wanted to see and customized a bit of the drive for us. This experience is well worth it!

The ultimate private tour!

Carlos was very kind, knowledgeable, caring and flexible. He picked us up at the cruise ship dock on time and toured us all around at our pace. He explained the historic and significant spots of interest and answered all of our questions. When we needed to stop for a restroom and lunch he gave us our choice of options. Carlos is the man! And the Azores are just amazing! Lastly he got us back to our cruise ship in plenty of time.

We had an incredible experience from start to finish. We arrived via cruise, and he was already waiting inside the terminal holding a sign with my name, which made the pickup seamless and stress-free. Instead of a typical guide, it felt like being shown around by a knowledgeable friend who genuinely loves his island. He shared insights, stories, and details that made the experience feel personal and engaging. We especially appreciated how flexible and thoughtful he was throughout the day. He adjusted the itinerary on the fly to avoid the fog and take us to the best viewpoints, which made a huge difference. It never felt rushed, and it was clear he cared about making sure we had the best possible experience. This great tour covered the key places to see on Sao Miguel, taking us to 5 or so main tourist attractions. All along from and to Ponta Delgada, we enjoyed beautiful scenery on the chosen route. The driver who functioned as the tour leader was very cordial and helpful. He provided us with historical information, factual information, and contextual information relative to the other islands, the Portuguese mainland, and the Azores's role yesterday and today. We also got pieces of fun information as we went along and he answered our many questions. I felt this was an excellent overview of Ponta Delgada and Sao Miguel.

This tour was a highlight of our 15-day transatlantic cruise. We had friends that did the Royal Caribbean (ship) excursion and from what we heard, there is just no comparison. Our driver and tour operator Luis was amazing! He took us on dirt "paths" to viewpoints that no bus would ever get to. We did visit the main tourist attractions but also spent a lot of time "off road". We requested lunch at a local's restaurant and again, Luis came through. I ordered the Azores specialty - Octopus, and while it was not my favorite, I can see how people would like it. This whole day was just so much fun! We had the opportunity to customize our tour but mostly just had Luis take us to his favorite spots.

A great tour of the west side of Sao Miguel

Wonderful tour of the west side of Sao Miguel Island. Diogo was our guide and did such a great job. He knew so much history of the Island as he grew up there. It was a nice small tour with seven people. We were taken to several key spots with great views, and also enjoyed the lunch.. Thank you!

Just book it already

This was the most amazing way to see the island! Highly recommend you do it at the beginning of your trip and Arthur was a spectacular, friendly and knowledgeable guide. He’s very passionate about his home and he was so kind and sharing extra tips. We got to do a few extra things with our small group and it was truly one of the best days of my life, especially if you are a solo traveler This is an experience, unlike any other
