When to visit
The best time to visit Papeete is in the dry season, from May through October. The weather this time of year is pleasant, and the chance of rain is low. If you’d like to learn more about local culture, or just want to see a variety of song and dance performances, visit in the first half of July, when the annual Heiva i Tahiti festival takes place.
Getting around
Papeete is easy to navigate on foot, and there are few reasons for visitors to use public transit and rental cars within the city, though taxis are widely available if needed. If you need to get to the airport from your hotel or the cruise port, you can either catch a taxi or prebook a private or shared transfer service.
Traveler tips
If you want to try local fare on a budget, head down to downtown Papeete’s waterfront. Every evening, you’ll find a line of food trucks, called roulottes, serving up fresh seafood, noodles, crepes, fries, and drinks. You can get your meal to go or sit down at one of the many tables and do some people-watching as you eat.
