Itineraries for Your Trip to Papeete
2 Days in Papeete for First Timers
Arriving at the airport at Papeete is a fun experience, as it's open to the air, and you might see some chickens scampering around the terminal. I love any time I can spend on the Islands of Tahiti, as the Tahitian people are very welcoming, and the land is so lush and beautiful. With two days in Papeete, must-do’s include spending some time on the black sand beaches, checking out the food truck scene, and even getting out on the water for a sunset cruise or a quick visit to Moorea. Here's your 2-day Papeete itinerary for first timers, full of interesting ways to spend your days.
If you only have time for one thing, make it a circle-island tour.
Papeete has a warm and tropical climate, with frequent rain storms.
There's so much to see near Papeete that you'll likely want to start with a guided tour to explore the island's top spots, such as the Arahoho Blowhole (Trou de Souffleur de Arahoho) and the Faarumai Waterfalls. Your guide can share the fascinating history of the islands and point out landmarks along the way. Be sure to stop for a roadside coconut stand when you see one.
There are many stunning beaches just a short distance from Papeete where you can learn to surf or try out other water sports, such as kayaking, surfing, or stand-up paddleboarding. If you’re looking for a unique beach that's great for swimming, head to Lafayette Beach, where you'll find black sand and plenty of spots to spend the afternoon.
Be sure to catch Tahiti's stunning sunset before you leave the island—you'll get some great photos to remember your time in French Polynesia. You can book a sunset cruise, departing from the Papeete marina. Snacks and Champagne are typically included, along with the possibility of stopping to swim among stingrays.
Start off the morning with another dip in the ocean. You can find several snorkeling excursions that will take you out to explore the underwater world by day. Sea turtles and manta rays are fun to spot, and you may even see dolphins and whales at certain points in the year.
In the afternoon, head to the colorful Marché de Pape'ete (Pape'ete Market) for some souvenir shopping and lunch, all under one roof with local vendors and artisans selling flowers, crafts, and food. A walking tour of the city will take you there, then to the Papeete Town Hall (Mairie de Papeete) and Bougainville Park (Parc Bougainville) nearby.
You can find many restaurants around Papeete, but one of the best ways to taste the local specialties is by visiting one of the food truck pods that pop up each night. These trucks serve everything from poisson cru (a raw fish dish similar to ceviche, served with coconut milk) to crepes, with large sizes and very reasonable prices. If you’re craving adventure, catch an evening ferry to Moorea for a guided night snorkel.
