Have a day to spare? Put Hiroshima and Miyajima in the calendar
If you want to truly understand a city, lace up your most forgiving walking shoes and put yourself in the hands of someone who calls it home.
On a warm September morning with just enough of an inland breeze to keep things civil, my wife Sharon and I stepped off the Shinkansen at Hiroshima Station to meet our guide, Nori Watanabe. Eight hours and untold thousands of steps later, we left with soaked shirts, aching arches, and an experience permanently etched into our memories.
Watanabe-san orchestrated our day with the precision of a master conductor. Knowing the tides wait for no traveler, he whisked us straight onto the local train and ferry to Miyajima. We caught the iconic torii gate rising out of sparkling high-tide waters, then lingered long enough to watch the sea retreat as low tide crept in, revealing the shrine’s grounded, earthen bones.
Before leaving the island behind, Watanabe-san steered us toward a midday refuel of Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki. Crisp cabbage, savory noodles, rich sauce sizzling against the teppan—it was an absolute masterclass in comfort food. Sorry, Osaka: your version is respectable, but Hiroshima wears the crown.
Crossing back to Hiroshima proper brought a shift in tone. The Peace Memorial Park and Museum is not merely a stop on an itinerary; it is an emotional reckoning.
Standing before the delicate origami cranes folded by young Sadako Sasaki, the tattered remains of school uniforms, the haunting survivor sketches, and the stone steps bearing the incinerated shadow of a human being is quietly devastating. It is a space every global leader with military authority ought to be required to walk through.
Yet just outside, the sunlit park and the skeletal, defiant silhouette of the Atomic Bomb Dome balance that heartbreak with a profound plea for human optimism.
We capped our marathon trek at Hiroshima Castle. While a meticulous reconstruction of the original lost to the blast, its timbered grace holds its own against the grandeur of Himeji or Osaka, offering a tranquil historical bookend to a monumental day.
Could you navigate these sites solo with a map and a rail pass? Sure. But you’d miss the soul of the place. From thoughtful route-planning weeks before our arrival to answering our endless stream of questions about modern local life and social nuances, Watanabe-san was warm, deeply knowledgeable, and impeccably professional.
Hire the guide, support the local community, and bring an extra pair of socks. You won't regret a single step.

Great if short on time in Osaka
Great tour for introduction and orientation of Osaka. Our guide Paul was great and gave us a real insight into the different areas. He gave us some great food suggestions. The Happy Pancake was by far the best! Would recommend if you’re short on time.

Grea introduction to Japan and Tokyo
Our tour guide (Youi?) was just terrific! We took her tour the first day we arrived in Tokyo. She gave us the perfect introduction to getting around Japan and more specifically Tokyo. She was so friendly and accommodating. We enjoyed spending time with her. She found a great little restaurant for us for our first meal in Japan! After our tour, we felt much better about using Uber and the trains.

Best Day in Kyoto!!!!
Our tour guide Tammy was AWESOME! We had a private tour of Kyoto with Tammy. She picked us up at our hotel and we had the best day ever. She gave us so much interesting information about Japan, Kyoto, Buddhism, Temples, shrines, Bamboo, Lotus, . . . . and so much more. We had a blast and learned so much. Tammy is truly a remarkable woman and a terrific tour guide. She even found a place where we could enjoy okonomiyaki! We would love to do another tour with Tammy!!!

Amazing tour with Rana
Amazing Mount Fuji Day Trip — Highly Recommended! 🇯🇵🗻
We had an absolutely wonderful experience on our Mount Fuji day tour, and a big part of it was thanks to our amazing driver and tour guide, Rana.
Rana picked us up right on time at 6:00 AM from our location, and we immediately headed towards Mount Fuji. The car was very neat, clean, and comfortable. On the way, we made a short stop at a Japanese service area where we enjoyed breakfast, coffee, and a little break before continuing our journey.
Our first major stop was Mount Fuji 5th Station, located approximately 2,300 meters above sea level. There were quite a lot of clouds that day, but the atmosphere and surroundings were absolutely beautiful. We also visited the Shinto shrine there, which was a wonderful experience. Luckily, for a few minutes, the clouds cleared and we got an amazing view of Mount Fuji — it was truly a memorable moment!
After that, we headed down towards Lake Kawaguchi and visited Oishi Park, where the lake and the beautiful surroundings created a breathtaking view. We had so much fun there, especially trying the amazing ice cream flavors, including lavender, rose, blue rose, blueberry, and other unique flavors. Everything was delicious!
Our next stop was Oshino Hakkai Village, where we explored the beautiful ponds, traditional old houses, souvenir shops, and local surroundings. We spent around one to one and a half hours there and also enjoyed a delicious lunch.
Overall, we had an incredible day from start to finish. The whole tour was well organized, comfortable, enjoyable, and full of beautiful experiences.
And a special thanks to Rana, our driver and tour guide. He was professional, punctual, friendly, and made our entire journey even more enjoyable.
This Mount Fuji tour is highly recommended! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
If you are planning a trip to Mount Fuji, I would definitely recommend booking this tour — and if you can get Rana as your driver/guide, even better! You are going to have an amazing

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ An Unforgettable Day in Tokyo with Yuki!
If I could give Yuki (Yukino Shiraga) more than five stars, I absolutely would!
Yuki was amazing from beginning to end. She met us right near our Airbnb and immediately made my family and me feel comfortable and welcomed. This was our first full day in Japan, and having Yuki with us made such a difference. Instead of feeling overwhelmed trying to navigate a new country, we were able to relax, explore Tokyo, learn, and truly enjoy the experience.
She took us to so many wonderful places and took the time to share information about Japanese culture, history, traditions, transportation, and everyday life. She was incredibly knowledgeable and professional, but what stood out to me most was how genuinely kind, patient, respectful, and sweet she was.
Throughout the day, Yuki made sure everyone in our family was comfortable and doing well. We never felt rushed. She answered our questions, helped us navigate the city, and took photos of us throughout the day so that we could all be included in our family memories.
She even surprised us with a small bag of Japanese treats, which was such a thoughtful and unexpected gesture. After the tour, she sent us the photos she had taken along with the sweetest message wishing my family continued happiness and safety. Those little touches meant so much to me and showed that she genuinely cared about our experience.
What makes Yuki so special is that she never made us feel like we were simply another tour group on her schedule. She made the entire experience feel personal. By the end of the day, it honestly felt like we had spent the day exploring Tokyo with a friend.
Yuki, thank you for giving my family such a beautiful introduction to Japan. 🇯🇵❤️ You helped make our first full day here something we will always remember, and I am so grateful that you were our guide.
If you are considering the Tokyo Customized Private Tour in 1 Day, I wholeheartedly recommend Yuki. If you have the opportunity to request her, DO IT! You will be in wonderful hands.
Five stars simply aren’t enough for Yuki. 10/10 An absolutely wonderful guide and an unforgettable experience! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Mitch was great!
Mitch was great! He planned a wonderful day easily adapted on the fly as we spent more time shopping in Harajuku than expected. He made the day seamless with our driver and communicated effortlessly with us and vendors throughout the day. Thank you Mitch for an unforgettable experience.

Great tour - family friendly and great way to use the time wisely
Great way to spend a day with a family without having to figure things out on your own. we scheduled it for our first full day in Tokyo so it was a great way to knock out the big items and get familiar with the area. Our tour guide Yuki was so incredible. She was kind and patient, especially with our kids ages 12 and 8. Highly recommend and ask for Yuki!
