We had a wonderful time. Our tour guide Sei was prompt, knowledgeable and made 8 hours very pleasant and memorable. He took us thru alternate pass ways to avoid the crowds, great photo spots and minimize going up so many steps! He was very patient with our group and so proud to teach us the history of it all. If you want to truly understand a city, lace up your most forgiving walking shoes and put yourself in the hands of someone who calls it home.
On a warm September morning with just enough of an inland breeze to keep things civil, my wife Sharon and I stepped off the Shinkansen at Hiroshima Station to meet our guide, Nori Watanabe. Eight hours and untold thousands of steps later, we left with soaked shirts, aching arches, and an experience permanently etched into our memories.
Watanabe-san orchestrated our day with the precision of a master conductor. Knowing the tides wait for no traveler, he whisked us straight onto the local train and ferry to Miyajima. We caught the iconic torii gate rising out of sparkling high-tide waters, then lingered long enough to watch the sea retreat as low tide crept in, revealing the shrine’s grounded, earthen bones.
Before leaving the island behind, Watanabe-san steered us toward a midday refuel of Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki. Crisp cabbage, savory noodles, rich sauce sizzling against the teppan—it was an absolute masterclass in comfort food. Sorry, Osaka: your version is respectable, but Hiroshima wears the crown.
Crossing back to Hiroshima proper brought a shift in tone. The Peace Memorial Park and Museum is not merely a stop on an itinerary; it is an emotional reckoning.
Standing before the delicate origami cranes folded by young Sadako Sasaki, the tattered remains of school uniforms, the haunting survivor sketches, and the stone steps bearing the incinerated shadow of a human being is quietly devastating. It is a space every global leader with military authority ought to be required to walk through.
Yet just outside, the sunlit park and the skeletal, defiant silhouette of the Atomic Bomb Dome balance that heartbreak with a profound plea for human optimism.
We capped our marathon trek at Hiroshima Castle. While a meticulous reconstruction of the original lost to the blast, its timbered grace holds its own against the grandeur of Himeji or Osaka, offering a tranquil historical bookend to a monumental day.
Could you navigate these sites solo with a map and a rail pass? Sure. But you’d miss the soul of the place. From thoughtful route-planning weeks before our arrival to answering our endless stream of questions about modern local life and social nuances, Watanabe-san was warm, deeply knowledgeable, and impeccably professional.

What an incredible day with Hiroshi! From the moment we stepped off the Shinkansen in Hiroshima, he was there waiting with a warm welcome, and from there the whole experience was seamless.
Hiroshi is extremely knowledgeable, humble, kind and genuine. Exploring his home area of Miyajima felt less like a tour and more like experiencing Japan with a local friend. He took great care of us, captured heaps of fantastic photos and shared parts of local life that made the day feel truly authentic.
Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and the museum were incredibly moving, and Hiroshi’s knowledge and storytelling added so much meaning and perspective to the experience.

You can read about the Manhattan Project and the atomic bombings, but it doesn’t really hit home how earth shattering the atomic bombings were until you visit Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima. You can debate whether dropping the bombs were justified but what you can’t question after visiting this place is that the atomic bombings were terrible events involving unfathomable loss of life, and we should do everything in our power to ensure such an event never happens again. Our guide, Akie, did a great job and went out of her way to take me to some things I had read about that weren’t necessarily part of the standard tour. If you are an American visiting Japan I would do everything possible to plan a visit Hiroshima to help better understand this tragic event and how it inalterably changed the world.

We had a wonderful day long tour with Mai from Hiroshima. Everything was smooth and well-organized. We saw and learned things we would not have if we went on our own. Mai also took us to a wonderful lunch sport and place for tea and treats on Miyajima at local places we likely wouldn't have stumbled into. It was a busy, full day but relaxing as Mai was so organized and kept us on track! We would book again.

Nori was a great guide. He was easy to communicate with and took all our requests into account when making the schedule. He was very knowledgeable and informative. We learned so much from the Hiroshima museum and wish we could’ve spent a bit more time in it. The Itsukushima shrine at Miyajima did not have water due to low tide so the gate did not actually appear to be “floating”, but we still got some good pictures.

Mai was a great guide. Met us at our hotel. Then went to Miyajama and peace memorial park. Great experience. She even took us to some great places for food and drink. Make sure you have a pasmo or suica card.

From the moment we booked our private tour, to being back home, the tour company and then our guide had excellent communication. We met our guide Emmy at the Shin-Hiroshima station and she immediately helped us navigate the station and be on our way to Miyajima. Having a second-generation Hiroshima survivor lead us through our day was wonderful and we were able to tailor the day to meet our interests.
Emmy provided answers to our questions, information on what we were seeing, and gave ample time for exploration and photos.
After Miyajima we headed back to Hiroshima for the tour to continue with more historical perspective and even a detour to a calligraphy store! She was patient when we wanted to buy snacks or were in the museum. We felt fortunate to have spent the day with this amazing tour guide.
It was a long day for all of us and Emmy made sure we weren't overwhelmed with information. She stayed with us all the way back to the Shin-Hiroshima station and made sure we got through with our tickets before departing.
Following the tour, she sent photos that she took of our family throughout the day which was very much appreciated.

It’s a nice experience off the Diamond Princess cruise. The morning was solemn visiting the museum and the hypocenter. The afternoon at Miyajima was relaxing. The okonomiyaki was delicious. The tour guide was knowledgeable but left us at the high speed boat station at the end of the trip. It would have been nice to be escorted back to the cruise… as the route back was not entirely obvious.
Eiji was waiting for us with a sign as soon as we got off our cruise ship. He was full of educational information knowledge of the city, patient with our pace & laughed with us. He made sure we had a full day of site seeing while making sure we got back to our cruise ship port on time. If you're cruising & looking for tours, go with Viator instead of booking thru cruise ship. Much more personable tour with guide & you'll see more. We rode taxis, boat, trains & walked through so many sites in Hiroshima. Long but very enjoyable day.

Shuji is an amazing tour guide, full of knowledge and history. Surprisingly the use of public transportation was extremely simple and hassle free. The tour as a whole was really good. Highly recommend Shuji to anyone looking to explore Hiroshima.

Tomoe was absolutely a fantastic guide. She was so knowledgeable and kept us interested the entire day. Weeks before we arrived Tomoe sent us three options for sites to see and worked very hard to personalize the tour to our interests. Our tour with Hiroshi and our chauffeur was absolutely amazing! They met us promptly at the port and Hiroshi went above and beyond to ensure we saw the best of Hiroshima. Visiting Miyajima Island—Hiroshi's home—was a highlight; his deep knowledge of the area is incredible. He managed to steer us away from the crowds to a stunning restaurant overlooking the iconic red Torii gate, surrounded by beautiful cherry blossoms.
Beyond the sights, Hiroshi shared his personal shrine with us and taught us meditation techniques that I now use daily. Even after nine hours of touring, we made it back to the ship perfectly in time for dinner. This tour was only as meaningful as it was because of Hiroshi’s passion and expertise. We were so impressed and highly recommend him!

We had a wonderful day with Sebastian. He was very detailed with our itinerary and although we experienced a very wet rainy day, we didn’t miss any of the wonderful sites of Hiroshima. Mickie was exceptional. I would highly recommend touring with her! She communicated effectively beforehand, sending an agenda for the day with times for each stop, the transportation we would use for the tour and how much everything would cost. She was extremely knowledgeable and easily adapted to any changes we wanted to make. She even told us about the weather forecast days in advance. Covered interesting places, especially the Peace Memorial and related nearby sites. Very helpful navigating Hiroshima’s public transit system, which would have been challenging if done on our own. Could have been more forthcoming with historical information, but we nonetheless saw and learned a lot.
