Iceland’s tiny Vík í Mýrdal village exists in the shadows of one of the country’s most dangerous volcanoes. On this leisurely self-guided walking tour, you’ll stroll through its compact village center, past modern attractions that showcase Iceland’s volcanic heritage, to the dramatic black coastline where folklore and geology collide. Starting at the red-roofed hillside Vík í Mýrdal Church (Víkurkirkja) that doubles as an evacuation point during volcanic emergencies, you’ll head into the heart of Iceland’s southernmost village. Along the way, I’ll share both personal connections to the area and fascinating insights into how nature has shaped life here for centuries.

The installation Chromo Sapiens is a landscape of hair created from synthetic hair extensions, which is the artist Shoplifter’s signature medium. You enter three caves, the first one is called Primal Opus; inspired by earthy hues, blacks and browns lined the walls with flashes of neon colored hair bringing it alive. The second and biggest chamber, Astral Gloria, is an explosion of brightly colored hair hanging from disorientating heights and dramatically illuminated by lights. Different recordings of sounds are played from various hidden speakers, creating a soundscape that is as all-encompassing as the landscape. Last is the third chamber Opium Natura, where shades of white and pastels created a celestial cloud cave. Guests are encouraged to touch the installation and dwell in it, enjoying the colors and sounds which can be described as a sort of color therapy and open eyed meditation.

What makes Old Icelandic Books truly special is its authenticity and rarity. This is the only place in the country where you have the opportunity to handle those rare books and manuscripts. This is not a standard museum exhibition behind glass cases. Visitors encounter genuine antiquarian Icelandic Books and manuscripts-objects that have survived centuries in a country were literature became the backbone of national identity. The experience is intimate and personal. It's guided directly by Thor, the guardian of the books that restores the books him self, offering first-hand insight into preservation, provenance and historical context. The Collection connects directly to the literary tradition that produced works like the Prose Edda and the Poetic Edda, texts that shaped global understanding of Norse mythology and influenced writers such as J.R.R. Tolkien and composers like Richard Wagner. The experience combines scholarship, restoration experties and cultural depth
