Itineraries for Your Trip to Albufeira
2 Days in Albufeira for First Timers
Since my mother moved to the golden shores of Albufeira nearly a decade ago, my biannual visits to this sun-soaked part of Portugal have been a highlight of my year. Even with frequent visits, the laid-back lifestyle and citrus-scented splendor of the area never loses its appeal because I’m always discovering new corners of this coastal region. Whether finding a secret stretch of sand or exploring the oft-overlooked countryside, Albufeira always charms me. Here are some of my favorite activities and attractions to help you make the most of two days in Albufeira.
If you only have time for one thing, make it a parasailing flight over the Algarve coast.
Algarve summers can be scorching—temps often top 95°F (35°C), so avoid August when crowds and heat peak.
On your first morning, get a feel for Albufeira’s laid-back charm on a tour of its Old Town, marina, and fishing port. Cover more sights in less time in a tuk-tuk or delve deeper into the town’s rich history on a walking tour that includes Portuguese snacks.
The Algarve’s warm and dry climate is the perfect place to grow grapes. This afternoon, feast on the region’s bounty on a wine and food tour revealing the lush Albufeira countryside most visitors miss. Go off-road to local wineries to sample sun-ripened varietals accompanied by tapas boards featuring meat, cheese, and olives typical of the region.
Tonight, make your debut on the Atlantic Ocean on an evening cruise. Opt for a luxury sunset yacht cruise and watch the evening light make the Algarve’s crumbling cliffs glow orange, or delight in a beach barbecue on a sunset dinner cruise that reveals the coastline after dark.
Get up and get straight out on the water this morning on a cruise that takes you to the rugged caves of the Algarve coastline. While you can see dolphins here year-round, from May to September, you'll see even more marine mammals in the water, and dolphin-spotting cruises heighten your chance of seeing pods.
Dedicate your second afternoon to outdoor adventure, whether in the water or high in the air. Admire the shortbread-colored cliffs and turquoise sea from above during a parasailing flight, or opt for a surf lesson that your instructor can tailor, whether it’s your first time in the swell or you want to hone existing skills.
