Itineraries for Your Trip to Albufeira
3 Days in Albufeira for Families
Home to a wealth of water parks, beaches, and swimming stops, Albufeira is the ideal place for younger travelers. The golden sands of the coastline aren’t just beautiful; they are perfect for families. The waters are generally calm, and the beaches feature all the facilities you could ask for, including ice cream shops.
Family trips to visit my mum in the Algarve catered to various ages and interests, and Albufeira never fails to deliver with its endless opportunities for outdoor fun. Here’s how to spend three days in Albufeira as a family.
If you only have time for one thing, make it a boat tour to see bottlenose dolphins, sandstone caves, and grottoes.
The summer sun in the Algarve is strong; try to keep the whole family out of it from 11am–2pm.
Albufeira's golden sands and secret sandstone caves are made for family fun. Thanks to their sheltered coves and calmer swells, the best swimming beaches include Praia dos Salgados and Armacao de Pera Beach (Praia Armacao de Pera), both a 15-minute drive from Albufeira. The latter hosts an inflatable summer water park.
This afternoon, make the most of the Algarve’s family-friendly fun at Aquashow Park to hustle down slides or relax in the lazy river. The park is home to wave pools, tunnel slides, and toddler play pools. Plus, sunbeds and food options give adults opportunities to relax, too.
Wake up early and head to Albufeira Marina to board a boat destined for the dolphin-rich Atlantic Ocean waters. Cruise past the buttery sandstone cliffs that characterize the Algarve’s coastline and watch the water for the bottlenose dolphins that live here year-round.
Then, after enjoying time *on the water, it’s time to get in the water. Don your wetsuit (the Atlantic is chilly year-round) and spend a few hours mastering the art of surfing as a family. The waves of Praia Gale are ideal for beginners—in fact, the waves of the Algarve are hailed as some of the best to surf in Europe.
Before the sun peaks, head to the Sierra Algarve (Algarve Mountains). While the region is famous for its beaches, its inland interior features mountains, orange groves, and medieval castles. Towns, including Silves and Monchique, help children learn about local history and feature plenty of kid-friendly dining options.
Finally, take the cute tourist train around Albufeira's Old Town and marina. Spend your golden hour here and admire the town. The train stops at the marina, the main strip where you’ll find a wealth of restaurants and a shopping mall home to fast food chains and souvenir shops.
