3 Days in Albufeira for First Timers

Curated by Jade Harveywho visits her mom in the Algarve every couple of months.

When I think of Albufeira in Portugal’s southern Algarve region, I think of golden sands, butterscotch-colored cliffs, and the crashing waves of the Atlantic—I can almost taste the salt on my tongue. I've been a regular visitor since my mum moved there six years ago. Perhaps too regular, if you ask her.

But how could I not be? Albufeira and the surrounding Algarve pack an almighty punch in terms of coastline, culture, and cuisine. So whether you’re there to experience the high-octane nightlife, sample freshly caught fish, or explore the sunshine-yellow coast, here’s how to experience the best of Albufeira in three days.

You can expect sunny skies year-round in Albufeira—but carry plenty of water in peak summer.

If you only have time for one thing, make it the sandstone caves and golden sands of this coastline.

Day 1

Spend your morning out on the sea. The refreshing waters of the Atlantic Ocean are home to bottlenose dolphins year-round, so your chance of seeing them is high. Boat tours take you far out to sea and offer a fresh perspective of the famous yolk-yellow coastline.

Spend the afternoon on the sands of Praia Gale, a 5-minute drive from Albufeira in the resort town of Gale. This beach is ideal for watching the sunset, but while waiting, explore the sandstone caves and rock pools that flank the beach. On the west side, you’ll find cocktail bars to buy a sundowner cocktail.

Day 2

Start your day with breakfast at one of the cafés lining Albufeira Marina before delving into the rich history of nearby Silves. This medieval town is home to the almost 1,000-year-old Silves Castle (Castelo de Silves) and architectural delights. You’ll find gift shops surrounding the castle that sell Portuguese cork and painted plates.

Albufeira and the nearby upscale resort of Vilamoura are renowned for their nightlife—they attract bachelor and bachelorette parties from across Europe. Spend your afternoon wine-tasting in the vineyard-blanketed hills of the countryside before heading back to the coast to dance the night away on the Montechoro Strip.

Day 3

Today, satisfy your appetite for adventure. Go inland on an ATV tour to discover normally inaccessible parts of the Algarve countryside before taking a closer look at the rock formations and caves that make the coastline so unique. Ponta da Piedade and the Benagil Cave are the most impressive features—explore them in a kayak or speedboat.

Spend your evening appreciating Alburfeira’s fresh and hearty food scene. Favorite local dishes include gambas piri piri, king prawns that come out sizzling in Portugal’s signature spicy sauce, and cataplana, a Portuguese seafood, tomato, and potato stew. O Veleiro restaurant is a top pick among locals.
