      Wonderful Walk around Évora

      Simon_B, Oct 2025
This tour was a superb introduction to some of the highlights of the beautiful city of Évora and its history (spotlighting the Jewish aspects). Paulo was incredibly knowledgeable and talked about the long history of Portugal and Évora in an engaging manner. We saw many interesting sites, including the Roman Temple, the Cathedral and the Chapel of Bones along with a walk through the old Jewish quarter and evidence of the rich history that Évora has. Little signs like hamsa door handles and spaces where mezuzahs used to be hint at who lived there and what happened, along with the sad stories of forced conversion and the Portuguese Inquisition. We would thoroughly recommend this tour for anyone with an interest in history and who wants to know more of Évora’s story.

Thank you so much for your review. We also do tours in Coimbra and Tomar. We wish you the best.

Évora Jewish history tour with 5% of Jewish emphasis.

Our guide was fantastic. But we thought we would be seeing much more of the Jewish history. The Jewish quarter was bypassed by guide who said there was not much to see. This experience needs to be eliminated as advertised or renamed to better reflect what the tourist will be seeing and learning about

Good afternoon, Arthur We are sorry to hear that the tour did not meet your expectations, contrary to what has been the norm, with all our previous customers praising the tour for its focus on the history of Jews in Portugal. This tour focuses much more on the intangible heritage and Jewish heritage in Portuguese culture than on the tangible heritage, which only exists in the Inquisition Palace (which you visited) and the Jewish quarter, which, due to the heat and according to the guide, your group decided to skip. The guide informed me that of the six people in your group, he realized that some were not Jewish and, as such, he tried to make the tour more comprehensive and inclusive, in accordance with the request of your companions. Even so, during the tour, there was no shortage of conversations about Jewish culture in Portugal and Jewish figures in Portuguese history, with architectural references to Jewish culture in the cathedral of Évora and the spirit of religious intolerance that prevailed during the Counter-Reformation when you visited the Chapel of Bones. In fact, we were surprised by your review because throughout the tour and at the end of the tour, you always told the guide that you were satisfied. We do not believe that we engage in misleading advertising, as you suggest, because the tour is always based on the intangible heritage of Jewish culture in Portuguese culture throughout history and includes several references to the history of Évora, with visits to the few monuments that exist in Évora directly related to the Jews who have lived in this city throughout history. It should be noted that at the end of the tour, the guide took you to the bus station, which was not planned, for your comfort and safety, because he felt that your group was already showing signs of fatigue and he did not want you to get lost or confused along the way, preferring to take you by the most direct route. The decision not to insist on visiting the Jewish quarter was due to the fact that some of you had expressed a desire to skip it, as well as the group's limited mobility and the intense heat. To compensate, he added an extra visit to the painted houses, which is not included in this tour. At the end of the tour, the guide said that many members of the group said goodbye to him with hugs, which, according to the guide, meant that they really enjoyed the tour. The excellent reviews from our previous customers show that we do not engage in misleading advertising and that we have exceeded our customers' expectations. Unfortunately, we were unable to exceed yours, which we regret. Best regards and best wishes to you and your companions.
