Loire Castles Guided Day Tour from central Paris

This Loire Castles guided Tour had positives and negatives. Regarding the strong positives: Beautiful historic Loire Castles definitely worth visiting. Our Guide Ilya shared the history with great skill ( History Major Sorbonne credentials) professionalism and warm personality. Many thanks Ilya and to the expert driver Alex. Now for the strong negatives: Despite listing over 600 pick up locations with our Hotel accepted on booking (also important to me choosing this Operator) they emailed 2 days prior advising no pick up or drop off as we “were outside the zone”. This shows a lack of integrity of the Operator. We were staying in St Germain which is central Paris! However the most negative aspect of the day was that we were very squashed in the vehicle with 6 adult participants. The road journey was most uncomfortable for a 14 hour Tour, with at least 7 hours spent in the vehicle. For passenger comfort and overall experience they should have provided a larger Van. For these reasons I cannot recommend this Tour, unless they have no more than 4 persons in this transport. Shame really as the Castles, Guide and Driver were truly exceptional.

Regarding the transportation it was our Mercedes minivan V Klasse 8 seater with comfortable adjustable seats. There were 6 passengers Guide and Driver. We had before You no issues with not enough space in the vehicle. Regarding Pick up. By Small groups we make it from Our pick area because otherwise picking up from all addresses we risk to loose too much time driving around in Paris instead of enjoying the Castles. Your hotel was unfortunately outside. By Private Experiences we pick up travellers from any address in Paris. Thank You again. Have only nice trips in France and Europe !

This day trip to Loire Valley was well done, and VALENTIN, our guide for the day, was EXCELLENT! He was knowledgeable about everything we saw, told us unique stories (not just Wikipedia info), and paced our day well. The family run winery visit was fun, informative, and we were able to go into their cave like place where the barrels of wine are stored. The van was very comfortable too. I highly recommend this tour. We are very glad we did it.

Great travel experience, good driver though limited English. Booking was horrible. Two days ahead they said “can you change date”. Couldn’t. Gave 3 options 1) cancel 2) private without audio addl 220€, private with audio 360€. Had no choice. Picked #2. Then came time to pay and only 360€ option was available. Sigh. No where did it say that if they didn’t get enough bookings that those would be the options. Very disappointed in the process, but the trip itself was great.

The castles were beautiful but not all accessible for mobility impaired (ie bad knees wheelchair walker etc). I would recommend having this more clearly described - ie the number of steps involved in the castles - on your description of the your tour. I would also recommend for small group (van) tours to have an audio enhancement device in the car. Those in the rear seats couldn’t easily hear the driver.

Our guide Valentine and driver Amed were wonderful. Although it takes 2.5 hours to get there from Paris, it is definitely worth it to see Chambord, Amboise and Chenonceau. Tour is well organized and Valentine told us so much about the history of the chateaux and who lived in them. It was a 12+ hour day but we enjoyed the experience so much. Thank you to Clewel for helping us with last minute booking changes.

Outstanding guide Olga was knowledgeable, professional and yet personal, easily connecting with us. She was very thoughtful in picking us up at our hotel and figuring out an alternative since I was having trouble doing all the stairs. I would say this was one of our best tours- the history, the stories, the chateaux’s beauty- all so very wonderful. And the driver was also terrific!!!

Although very knowledgeable (reason for 2 stars), Helen our guide was very soft spoken (slightly louder than whispering). When we just got in the car, she mentioned she speaks low and I told her she needed to speak louder so we could her her. At our first castle, I told this to her this again, twice, but that didn't change her whispering voice. Secondly, there were only 6 of us (3 couples) on this tour. There were many, many times when she got to a new area, that she started speaking when the first couple joined her. Rarely did she wait for all 6 of us to be together. I paid over $600 US for 2, needless to say, it was not a good experience. Helen is a very nice person and was very concerned about my wellbeing having a bad back, but maybe she is better suited for private tours with only 2 people. Lastly, on the long drive back to Paris I fell asleep. Waking up, I noticed the driver with his cell phone in one hand while driving. I thought he was just checking directions. But then he opened a text or email, looked at it, then started scrolling apparently looking at his texts or emails. I don't know how long he was looking on his phone, but yelled to him "can you stop looking at your cell phone, I don't want to die on this trip". He stopped and apologized. Unfortunately for them, my tip was a reflection of the tour experience and angst of the driver texting while driving.

We like our customers but we dont like if they are talking on mobile phone during the guided trip disturbing other participants of the Small group. We dont like when travellers don't keep together with other 3 customers during the guided tour and our guide has to repeat the same information twice. And this repeats several times. The guided tours in all 3 castles were made like always and Helen gets almost 5 star reviews for her job. I suppose the gentleman felt to have overpaid for this 13 hours Live guided day trip of total 4 people by Mercedes minivan. Can happen.

Great Tour. Loire Valley is worth it.

The castles are amazing. The Loire Valley is a must visit if you are in Paris. Da Vinci’s tomb was beautiful and Chambord is worth the trip itself. We loved the labyrinth gardens at Chenonceau!

They cancelled at about 3pm the day before. We were only in Paris 2 days.

Not true story. We informed the customer 2 days before the travel date offering several alternative options: to make the trip on the next day, to make it as Private Experience. The customer refused it but forgot to cancel it on time and cancelled less that 12 hours before the travel date. So we had to ask Viator support to refund the customer fully. Not honest people.

A great Loire Valley day trip from Paris

In short, this trip exceeded my expectations, and is an exceptional value when you consider that you are getting a driver and a guide for a full day. Our driver, was pleasant and had a very clean and comfortable van. Our guide Ilya was a history student at the Sorbonne, and he loved answering all of our questions. I read several comments where people said they did not have enough time at the 3 Chateaux. I am not sure what they were expecting. We spent about an hour and a half at each, and we found that a suffientient enough amount of time to experience each. To be honest, if you consider that the round trip drive from Paris to the Loire Valley and back is over 5 hours, I think it is a credit to the tour company that they have figured out how to schedule a 3 Chateaux tour. For me, the biggest surprise was the wine tasting. We visited Plou and Fils, a winery that has been in the same family for 500 years. I found their pours to be standard for a wine tasting, and they had an excellent selection of wines from the Valley. Again, I found this to be an excelent tour, and I would reccomend it to anyone. Also, the tour operator was very responsive to all my questions prior to our trip.

The best castle tour!

This tour was fantastic! Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and gave us some great history and details about every location we visited. He was very accommodating to the group and we had enough free time at each location to explore on our own. The wine tour was excellent as well. The wine-maker gave us details about the process and we were able to sample whatever wines we wanted. The wine was very delicious, as was the sparkling wine. Everything was great and the transportation was comfortable and cool. You do stop for a quick lunch at one of the locations and there are several different restaurants to choose from. Be sure to find one that has the food you like. You don’t have to go with the restaurant that the guide recommends. So if you prefer pizza vs french cuisine, go for it! You also stop at a gas station on the way there and the way back for a rest stop and where you can get snacks and a refreshment. Be prepared for a long day, but it was well worth it! I highly recommend this tour.

We were very glad to see the three amazing castles during this tour. The views were spectacular. The guide was knowledgeable about royal history but less versed in other topics, and there was no commentary during long drives. The price was very high and the tour guide was less experienced. We also felt rushed in a few spots.

Great views. Knowledgable guide. But not a great review. Just 4 to 6 travellers in Mercedes minivan with guide and driver. It is more comfortable but will be always more expensive than travelling by a bigger bus.

Did not get our money’s worth on this tour

We have been on many viator tours and have had great success. I do not like to write a bad review and have never had to but for the price we paid I felt like I needed to say something. The driver was great and the chateaus were great but our guide spoke very little English, (we paid for an English guide) did not give accurate information sometimes and when we picked him up in the morning he said hello and then fell asleep. Never said a word the entire trip which is 2-3 hours. We would have been better off to just pay for a driver. Did not get our money’s worth on this tour. We went on several other viator tours the same week with great success!

There were guide and driver with You all the day long driving You around the Loire Valley Castles providing tickets and all the information. It was one of our Mercedes minivans with adjustable seats. They canceled us at 10pm the night before

We booked this trip weeks before we flew to Paris. At 10pm the night before we were to go on this trip at 730am the next day, they canceled us. They told us since only 2 of us booked, they couldn't only take us. They should have never confirmed our trip and took our money, if they never had enough people to move forward with it. While a refund is in progress we were incredibly disappointed in how this was handled. They should make note that this is a trip that can cancel anytime, if not enough people join.

In our description we have mentioned that this is a Small group of 4 to 7 people. If we have not enough people we prevent the customer about the situation offering alternative dates or Private experience surcharge. We do it 3 - 4 days before the travel date. At 10:00pm we already sleep and don't cancel bookings.

Four stars because of the tour itself, but pickup gets a zero

The chateaus and wine tasting were fantastic. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and provided loads of commentary and information. However there was over an hour late start because he could NOT read the address of the hotel for pickup and would NOT listen to the name given him or read it on the chat despite three confirmations. Then since no number was provided to call him I had to track him down via Viator. After being more than an hour late he wanted to cancel our tour (the highlight of our Paris trip) because I was “upset”. I would highly Recommended this tour, this guide just needs someone else driving that pays attention to details like location.

I love history, I have read a lot about French History and about its kings. This tour did not disappoint! Olga and Roman were amazing guides. The castles we visited were beyond beautiful, Olga was so knowledgeable about them all. Lunch was perfect. The wine tasting was the best way to end the tour! I would do this tour again tomorrow!
