Super day trip!

Such a fantastic day for a great price. The guide/driver was engaging and knowledgeable, clearly passionate about his country.. he took us to mountains, wine tasting and to a traditional taverna for ponca. Then on to a catamaran where we saw dolphins. Superb day thank you

If you're interested in drinking Poncha and Madeira wine, this is the tour for you! The morning was spent travelling to Cabo Girao which has a lovely view of the ocean, another highpoint view from the mountains, a wee bit of off-roading and then onto some drinking. I didn't make it to the dolphin watching so I couldn't comment on that portion of the trip.

We were collected from our hotel at Cabo Girao at the advised time and met our fellow travellers - there were 7 of us in our 4WD vehicle plus the guide and driver and joined a convoy of approximately 8 vehicles. Our guide was knowledgeable on the area and gave us a good commentary of local information. We were taken up some very steep roads that would not have been accessible without 4WD! We stopped at a few locations to see the sights and take photographs, this also included a stop at a coffee shop where we were able to enjoy some delicious homemade cake. After the jeep tour we were dropped off in Funchal for the catamaran trip with plenty of time to find a local eatery for lunch. The catamaran trip was excellent and we were very fortunate to see a pod of pilot whales. The boat also took us to the base of Cabo Girao where we could see the lava tubes in the cliff face and the glass viewing platform at the top of the cliff, 580m up. We didn't know that we would be able to swim so we hadn't brought our costumes with us. We thoroughly enjoyed the day however were very disappointed that we weren't made aware at the time that we would have to make our own way back to our hotel - we don't feel that it was an unreasonable expectation to be taken back to our hotel considering we had been picked up there in the morning, and having read the tour description again, nothing indicated this would be the case. Unfortunately we only realised after we had been dropped off for the catamaran trip that we would have to find our own way back to our hotel, which involved a 45 minute bus trip. We would recommend that this be added to the list of items not included in the excursion.

A great all day tour, seeing so much of the island from land and sea! The tour guide in the jeep was knowledgeable and extremely courteous - our safety was his biggest concern. The off road section was really good fun. There were multiple stops which allowed you to see the amazing scenery and even sample the local poncha! We were taken directly to the team who looked after the catamaran half of the tour and this was a smooth and easy transition. The tour itself was really fantastic, we were lucky enough to see spotted dolphins, bottlenose dolphins and pilot whales as well as turtles! The team onboard were really informative about the regulations surrounding the preservation of these animals and about the animals themselves. It was a fantastic day out.
