Really a Great Experience! The Father, Angel, who is a guide and speaks 5 languages, picked us up at our hotel and dropped us off at the Bazurto Market. The market is really large and bustling with locals doing their shopping. No tourists here. Definitely worth a visit. There we met his daughter Maria Angelica, who speaks good English. She took us through the market buying all of the ingredients for the dinner we were going to cook. We had 6 meals to choose from and we did Fish Soup with yucca, plantain and potatoes + coconut rice and fruit juice. An hour later, loaded down with sacks of food, Angel picked us up and took us to their house nearby. Maria, the mother, was the cook and instructor with Maria Angelica helping out. We spent a wonderful few hours in their house getting to know the family as well as learning how to cook a great Colombian meal.

Do you want to see, feel and taste authentic Cartagena? Then this is a not to be missed excursion. Our family (2 adults and two teenage girls) were Picked up promptly at our hotel by Duran, we drove about 30 minutes to Buzurto market. A vast open air market (mostly shaded) where what seems like a sea of humanity has congregated to buy and sell EVERYTHING! There are 100’s and 100’s of stalls. Our tour was food based so we stopped at several stalls to pick up various fruits, vegetable, spices, fish and meat. Duran expertly navigated the way through the crowded aisles. We stopped at a few stalls for breakfast and also tastes of some exotic fruits. This part of the tour lasted about 1.5 hrs. From there we drove to the second half of the tour where we would go to a local house and cook all of our ingredients into a delicious lunch. The big surprise was that we drive to Duran house. We had no idea this was where we were going and it was a very nice surprise. At the house we met Duran’s lovely wife Maria. For the next hour we all participated in food prep tasks. We made Stuffed fish, coconut rice, plantain, avocado salad, beef in exotic spices, fresh passion fruit juice were all on the menu. We were also lucky enough to meet Duran and Maria’s son who came home for lunch. Our hosts were very gracious and my family felt like we were among friends. All the food we coked was super fresh and incredibly delicious. When the time was up we were driven back to our hotel. I cannot recommend this tour enough. Get out of your comfort zone and experience real Cartagena. You will not be disappointed.

This was the most amazing experience for me, my husband and friends! First we got off the ship and walked into an amazing zoo full of birds, flamingos, bunnies, sloths, peacocks and more. Maria met us and the driver took us to the market to get the ingredients for our meal. She taught us about the culture and history through the day. We stopped for a nice bite after shopping with a pastry like a donut and choice of a fruit smoothie. We arrived at their lovely home and met everyone and began cooking. We were amazed at the coconut rice preparation, something truly special. We prepared a stuffed black fish with vegetables that was delicious and the fish was very light. We also prepared an authentic Cartagena beef dish which was so amazing. We learned how to smash plantains and fry them. After we completed our cooking, we all sat down with the family, blessed the food and enjoyed our delicious meal and time with the Duran Family. We all can’t wait to try some our culinary learnings when we return home and will cherish this day forever! We highly highly recommend this experience!

Our host picked us up at our hotel with a professional driver. We talked through the day's plan on our way to a sprawling, bustling marketplace, where we sampled local exotic fruits unavailable in North America. One fruit looked like a kiwi, but on its inside looked and tasted like a cinnamon-spiced holiday yam! We met a few of our host's venders/friends. One gentleman made us a fresh juice using some of the fruit we sampled. Delicious! Eventually, we had to get down to business. So we learned how to pick out the best plantains for our purposes (ripe, yellow, and sweet for fried plantains; green ones for patacones). We learned how they spot the freshest of fresh fish, and what local spices are essential to our dish--stuffed white fish with coconut rice and salad. Our fish monger also weighed in on the popular topic of which Colombian music genre is best--I think he favored Vallenato over Champeta. With our grocery bags filled to the brim, we were escorted back to our host's home where her mother, Maria, put us to work. We do a lot of cooking at home, so I wasn't expecting to learn cooking techniques, but we did! Our jaws dropped when we watched Maria process a coconut without spilling any liquid and without using any sharp objects. I just tried the same back at home, and I was able to break down a coconut in about five minutes, beating my previous record by an hour or two. From there, we learned how to make coconut milk from an actual coconut. And then we took our fresh ingredients and made a piece of culinary art! I will be cooking stuffed white fish, patacones, and coconut rice for the rest of my life thanks to these to gracious hosts. So, we learned a lot and got the full, immersive cultural experience. But what I wasn't expecting was that our hosts made us feel like part of their family for the morning. We sat at their table, talked with the children, we prayed, drank, ate, and laughed. This was one of the most memorable, important experiences of our lives, and we feel very fortunate to have been given this opportunity. Thank you so much :)

From the moment we were picked up from our hotel, Duran shared his knowledge of Cartagena as we drove through crowded streets to the market. Once inside, we were grateful for his experience and zoomed through the various stalls selling all types of fruits, vegetables, meats, fish, and endless plastic items! We tasted some samples along the way. We brought our haul back to his house and the next 3 hours we collectively prepared (chopped, stirred, grated, seasoned, laughed). We sat down and shared the fruits of our labor for a delicious and authentic Colombian meal.

Lovely experience with our guide Duran and his family! Wonderful and welcoming. My only suggestion is that a group of 13 is too big to properly see all the cooking given the size of the kitchen and their family. Would highly recommend!!

Andre and family was gracious hosts. Andre was a wonderful tour guide, very knowledgeable- we lived walking through the market and shopping for the ingredients for our lunch. We have done cooking classes in the past in other parts of the world. This was an extremely unique experience. We were picked up in an air conditioned vehicle. The selection of dishes we could prepare was explained. We went to the very large market where ALL of the locals shop. We tried a delicious juice, breakfast and quite a few samples of local fruit. We acquired what was needed for the meal. We felt like VIPs being invited into their family home. We helped prepare a delicious meal. We enjoyed dancing in kitchen with Maria! This is a great tour for someone who doesn't want to do a quintessential tourist type of thing.

My husband and I did this tour in March for our anniversary and had the most amazing time. We spent four days in Cartagena and this experience was one of our favorite parts of our trip. We were picked up at our Airbnb and driven to the market. Maria showed us all around the market and talked us through the menu while helping us pick out the fresh foods we would be using later in the day. She incorporated stories and facts while we went and we tried empanadas and juice from the market. Once we had what we needed, we drove to Maria's family's house, only about 10 minutes away from the market. We were greeted by Maria's mother and brother, and spent a few hours cooking a beautiful meal, which we enjoyed all together. Maria speaks great English and her mother understood a lot of what we said and could communicate in broken English and through Maria. We learned so much about Cartagena and the food we were cooking - it was a wonderful break from the city and a nice time spent with wonderful people and good food. I would definitely recommend this experience to anyone who visits the city!

This was the best experience I had in Cartagena. My husband and I just got back last night and we are still talking about this tour. Before booking I read all the reviews on Viator and Trip Advisor. They deserve (and am pretty sure they received) 5 stars across the board. Angel, his wife Maria and his daughter Maria Angelica were so welcoming and wonderful.
Angel and Maria Angelica were our guides in the Bazurto Market and made sure to keep us safe, informed and fed! We stopped to enjoy some breakfast, delicious fresh juices and even some fresh fruit. All while buying ingredients for our lunch.
After the market tour we drove to their family home. While driving there Angel made it a point to keep the tour and conversation interesting; pointing our important landmarks and sharing historical information.
The cooking class was like cooking with extended family. They will definitely put you to work, but I loved every moment. The result was a delicious homemade meal.
Angel was such a great tour guide. He speaks English, French, Italian and obviously Spanish. He has so much knowledge and made the day so enjoyable. He offers other tours as well but this one is a must!

It was an absolutely wonderful personal experience where a man brought us into his own home for a home-cooked meal. Prior to eating the meal we went to the market and hand selected all the vegetables and fruits and the fish for our meal. We also participated in preparing the meal. I would recommend this tour for everyone who wants to experience Columbia in a personal way. Superb experience.

Angel and his wife Maria welcomed us into the warmth filled home! We met their adult children, shared stories and showed us how to cook a traditional homecooked Colombian meal.
But before doing so, Angel took us to the local market. A maze of stalls selling everything you can imagine! We got to not only buy the fresh ingredients for our lunch, we got to snack along the way tasting diffetent food and fruits. WEll WORTH spending an afternoon.

I wouldn’t have felt comfortable going to the market alone but our tour guides made us feel safe. They navigated the market and gave good explanations. They answered all of the (many) questions we had. We also got to try some new fruits. We went back to their home and cooked using the ingredients we purchased. Delicious and so much fun!

What a wonderful day spent with Angel and Maria. They took very good care of us! The Bazurto Market is a must see at least once. The Durán family is amazing!! They welcomed us into their home and share food culture and laughs. We started at bazurto market where we shopped for our specific meal we got to practice our Spanish and shop with the locals. We returned home where we met Maria the chef. She was extreme sweet as was their son. We learned lots about Colombian food and culture and had amazing food. They made sure to accommodate our dietary need and still stick to Colombian cooking style. I can't wait to recreate these recipes at home.

Angel Duran and his family were so warm and welcoming to our family (two adults one child). They took us shopping for fresh ingredients and then brought us to their home in an authentic (non-touristy) neighborhood. They strictly adhered to all covid protocols. We proceeded to cook with Angel, his wife, and their 21-year old son. The meal was phenomenal, we had a lot of fun, and we felt like we experienced true Colombian culture far more than through any normal tourist experience. This was one of the top travel experiences I've had and as close to "can't miss" as it gets.
