Found on the tip of Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula, the remote town of Santa Teresa was once known as a backpacker destination, but it has recently grown in popularity thanks to its combination of sun, surf, hip restaurants, and celeb sightings. Travelers looking for bohemian vibes, however, will find that the beach town still retains its carefree sense of spirit. Many things to do in Santa Teresa revolve around the water—think surfing, fishing, snorkeling, and kitesurfing—but you can also participate in other land-based activities like yoga.

When to visit

Santa Teresa experiences two distinct seasons: the dry season (late November through the end of April/beginning of May) and the green (aka “wet”) season (May to early November). From May until August, it mainly rains in the evening, while lengthier downpours happen in September and October. Tourism peaks during the dry season, but the wetter months are better for surfing. If you want to avoid the crowds or hang ten, plan to visit May through November.

Getting around

It’s about a 5.5-hour drive from Juan Santamaría International Airport to Santa Teresa, including a 70-minute ferry ride across the Gulf of Nicoya. Or, you can hop on a quick domestic flight to Tambor Airport and take a 45-minute taxi ride to town. From Liberia, it’s about five hours by car; buses and shared shuttles are also available. Once in Santa Teresa, you’ll be able to get around on foot, by motorcycle, or via ATV, a popular choice because of the area’s dirt roads.

Traveler tips

No matter your skill level, Santa Teresa is one of the best places to go surfing in the Nicoya Peninsula. The town's main beach, Playa Carmen, features a good break that attracts mid-level and experienced surfers, whereas Playa Hermosa is popular among beginner surfers and feels more remote. If you're not planning to surf, head to Playa Santa Teresa for its restaurants, hotels, and shops. Note that while an ideal setting for surfers, Santa Teresa’s rough waves and rip currents make swimming a challenge.
