    Foods of Cairo

Be sure to sign up for the awesome adventure. Not only will you taste amazing and authentic Egyptian food, you will also mix with the local people and experience Cairo through their lens! Plus, my guide was awesome and knowledgeable!

    Off the tourist beaten path

    Lorant_V, Dec 2025
I couldn't have asked for a better way to spend the last afternoon of 2025! This Cairo Nights Food Tour was an absolute masterclass in Egyptian hospitality and local flavor. Huge thanks to our guide, Joay! He was incredibly knowledgeable, friendly with our small group, my wife and myself, and made us feel like we were exploring the city with a local friend rather than just a tour group. We wandered through the stunning backstreets of El-Darb El-Ahmar and El Gamaliya. Starting near the Al-Azhar Mosque provided such an atmospheric and historic backdrop for the evening. As a tourist you would probably not take those paths we did. They aren't kidding about the 10+ tastings. From the smoky charcoal-grilled meats to the authentic local desserts, every stop offered something unique and delicious.

    Disappointing Experience for the Price

    Aseel_M, Nov 2025
The experience was not very good and did not match the price we paid. The tour guide was very nice, but the food that was served was extremely limited, cheap, and not filling at all. They also combined my wife and me with two foreign guests, and the four of us had to share one single dish.

    Great tour!

    Abby_C, Oct 2025
Nada was an amazing guide for our group. We tried many great, authentic Egyptian dishes. She was very informative and lively. I would highly suggest her as a guide for this tour!

    Great Intro to Egyptian Food

    Blair_L, Sep 2025
Mona was a great guide. She took us through Old Cairo to spots we probably never would have found on our own. We tried so much good food - definitely come to the tour hungry. Mona also gave us some great historical insights for the neighborhood that we were in and answered all of the questions we had about modern day and historical Egypt. This tour was a great introduction to Egyptian food - highly recommend!

Authentic Egyptian Food Tour Worth Every Penny

    Angela_F, Sep 2025
Authentic Egyptian food at every stop, away from the touristy spots. Our guide was excellent, Louay is an Egyptologist foodie with a passion for sharing his culture. The falafel was amazing, and you must try the Egyptian “whisky!” Would absolutely recommend a tour with Louay anytime you are in Cairo. Five stars.

I had a lot of fun...

I had a lot of fun touring some local spots in Egypt. We tried a lot of different foods and all the owners were warm and welcoming, and Nada was an excellent tour guide.

    Great food tour

    Bethaney_L, Apr 2025
Great tour, we sampled so many foods that were very tasty. The guide Lou kindly waited with me until I was safely in my Uber.

    Subpar Food Experience

    Trenice_J, Jan 2025
Loay is very knowledgeable and it shows that he has a passion for Cairo. He was pleasant, professional, and we enjoyed the tour; however, the. food places selected were not what we are accustomed to. For example, the cook at Egyptian Pancake House accepted cash from a customer while he was in the middle of making dough. This is not acceptable! Money is dirty with many transactions. After seeing that, we declined to eat. Flies were on the food and he waived it and continued to mix the dough. Another example, cats were sitting on the chair and he asked us to have a seat. We had no intentions eating with cats. The table was also dirty and he placed our food on an unclean table. Overall, we believe the food selections should have been upscale and in sanity establishments. We did not enjoy that part of the tour but we did enjoy meeting Loafy. He was kind to call an Uber at the end of the tour and he waited to ensure our safety. Hoping this review can be viewed as constructive criticism.

Hi Trenice, we have reached out privately, and we are sorry to hear that the tour did not meet your expectations. Our tour is designed to showcase Cairo’s authentic street food scene, and as mentioned on our tour page, we specifically highlight “humble eateries” in our “street food tour.” The photos on our tour page aim to provide a representation of the types of places we visit. We understand that street food dining can be quite different from restaurant experiences. Regarding your concerns about hygiene, we take all feedback seriously. While street food vendors operate in an open-air environment, they are often long-established and serve many hungry guests daily. That being said, while we were not previously aware of the specific concerns you raised about the Egyptian pancake house (which is usually a guest favourite), we will certainly take on board your comments for the future. Cats are a part of the local scene in the historic backstreets of Old Cairo, and although we have no authority over them, we understand that not all guests may be comfortable with this and we take it into account for future guests. We’re pleased to hear that you enjoyed Loay’s knowledge and professionalism during the tour. Though our small team are saddened by this low star ranking, we do appreciate your kind words about him. Ensuring that our guests feel safe and well taken care of is very important to us. We have received generally great feedback from many guests who have enjoyed trying authentic Egyptian street food, but we completely understand that it may not be to everyone’s taste, especially if you were expecting a more upscale dining experience. Despite this, we truly hope you had a fantastic time in the country overall, and we appreciate you choosing to explore Cairo’s food scene with us. Best, A Chef's Tour: Cairo Food Tours

    Fantastic

    Samuel_G, Jan 2025
Fantastic experience. We tried such a wide range of interesting, delicious, and curious, foods, treats and drinks. It was nice to go around an area of the city we had yet to visit. The guide was so friendly, spoke great english, and was very knowledgable. We would recommend to anyone. 10/10

    Food tour, local experience.

    Daniel_D, Jan 2025
Loay is a great tour guide, knowledgeable about his heritage and the city food culture. It was great navigating through the small back alleys, meat, fish and local grocery markets. Didn’t see any other tourists, so very off beat. A great way to eat what locals eat. Everything from koshary, to pancakes, lamb, different rice puddings, assortment of pickles etc… local coffee houses are a must to visit. Just watching them brew it would make any Starbucks barista blush. Great way to spend an evening in Cairo. Great tour company and tour guide Loay! Fun times!

Nada was a very informative tour guide. She also took the time to give attention to two children that were included in my tour group, as well. I enjoyed the walking a little more than the food though. Not much of the food stood out.

    Response from Host, Mar 2025

Hi Amber, we're happy to hear that you found Nada to be a very informative tour guide and that you appreciated her attentiveness to the children in your group. It's great to know that you enjoyed the walking aspect of the tour as well. Egyptian food can be a bit of an enigma for many, and our tour aims to challenge traditional tastes you might have compared to this region of the world. Some dishes are rather interesting, such as molokhiyya made from the jute plant, and Egypt's national dish of koshari, made from pasta and lentils. Our tour also includes a visit to a historic pickle factory, a market for crispy fried shrimps (gambari maklee), and pickled stuffed eggplants (makdous), and goat meat (lahm ma'az) with Egyptian salad whiskey (salata whiskey) (which is non-alcoholic!). Our personal favourite is the delicious grilled lamb and beef kofta, with fresh bread and tahini sauce! We strive to provide a memorable and delicious culinary experience on our tours. We hope you had a great rest of your vacation in Egypt! Best, A Chef's Tour: Cairo Food Tours

    Yummy explorations

    william_d, Sep 2024
A great way to explore the city. We always find a good tour is the best way to get a feel for a city. Nada was great and informative. A wild city well worth the trip.

Our favorite tour of the entire trip

    Cristina_P, Jul 2024
Our tour started off with meeting Nada at the Alazhar Mosque in the afternoon. From the very start, she was absolutely wonderful - we felt comfortable and safe in her capable hands, while she walked us through the busy streets, gave us fascinating information about the mosque and the surrounding area, and introduced us to the local food. Word of advice: go hungry! The food was both delicious and interesting. I don't want to divulge all the dishes to allow for flexibility in their tour to change dishes and restaurants. Just know that every dish was tasty (okay..I will talk about one: I knew of falafel but fell in love with felefel in Cairo, made with fava instead of chickpea and so delicious). We started off here and the rest of the tour was layer upon layer of history, food anthropology, and cultural expose. Nada has an elegant and regal way about her and is so knowledgeable - honestly, I wish we had booked every one of our tours with her. She travels the entirety of Egypt to provide tours and was able to answer our 101 questions, both candidly, with humor, and full of interesting insight. Next time, she is our go-to for every tour. I can't speak highly enough of this tour!

Great Tour Guide (knowledgeable and helpful)

    Mong_Y, Jun 2024
Nada was a fantastic tour guide. I traveled to Egypt with my wife and 2 daughters. Nada, being female, immediately made them feel very comfortable. Nada was knowledgeable with only only the food culture but also historical sites and history in Egypt. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience with her. Out of all the tour guides that we had in Egypt, Nada was the best.

    Best food tour in Cairo

Absolutely incredible tour! The guide was amazing and the food was very delicious! I recommend this tour to everyone!

An Amazing Cairo Experience Not to be Missed

    THOMAS_C, Mar 2023
Everything about this experience was exceptional. The write up was intriguing and so we signed up hoping for the best and it definitely exceeded expectations. From the moment we met Seham it was a magical tour - experiencing Cairo on Friday when locals were shopping in the “souk” was a plus. Not only did we learn about all the tasty treats we ate - which were many! - Sedham shared with us local history, what was going on around us all while guiding us through the street mazes of Cairo. And finally to top off our spectacular evening she shared with us the cultural importance of Ramadan and how Egyptian families prepared with their shopping and food. It was not a tour rather a cultural food experience that my family will cherish for a lifetime - shukran (شكرا) Sedham!!
