Itinerary
Start your private tour with hotel pickup in Cairo or Giza, and travel north to Egypt’s Mediterranean coast, hearing snippets about Alexandria’s illustrious history from your Egyptologist guide on route.
After roughly 2.5 hours, arrive in Alexandria and savor the sea air at your first stop; the harborfront Fort Qaitbey. Take in the pretty, 15th-century fort, and learn how it was built over the ruins of Alexandria’s ancient lighthouse, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
Next, pay a visit to the Serapeum: the remnants of an Egyptian-Greco temple to the god Serapis, before strolling to the neighboring Pompey's Pillar, a 3rd-century Roman triumphal column. Gaze up at the still-standing column and hear how it was carved to commemorate a victory by the Emperor Diocletian.
Break for lunch at a local restaurant, and travel to the Roman Kom al-Dikka amphitheater, built in the 4th century and capable of seating more than 600 spectators.
After viewing the horseshoe-shaped theater, make your way to the Kom ash-Shuqqafa catacombs, Egypt’s largest known Roman necropolis. Descend by the stairs and explore the eerie tunnels, lined with empty tombs and statues, as you hear about Roman funerary rituals.
Lastly, view the new Alexandria Library (Alexandrina Bibliotheca), built to commemorate Alexandria’s ancient library. Admire the outside of this stunning building — shaped like a sundial — and hear how it can hold a staggering eight million books.
Your tour then finishes with a Cairo or Giza hotel drop-off.

Excellent clean van and wonderful guide. Lunch was an incredible fish dinner on the Mediterranean! The sites were very interesting.

We had a full day tour of Alexandria. It took us about 2 and 1/2 hours to get there from Giza but well worth it. Our guide was very knowledgeable about all of Ancient Egyptian History. Visiting the catacombs was amazing and the whole day was great. Had lunch overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Highly recommend visiting Alexandria.

Our tour with Narmeen was wonderful! She was very friendly and helpful, and totally open to adjusting the tour to what we were hoping to do in Alexandria. It was overall an enjoyable, stress-free experience of the city and its history!

I highly recommend Egypt Best Day Tours! Nermin was professional and very accommodating. She helped us with a lot more than just the Alexandria tour. We were not sure of what other things we should do in Egypt and she helped us decide and arranged it for us as well!

Had a wonderful day with Nermin from Egypt best day tours. She was a very passionate Egyptologist who took us in and around several sites. Nermin was passionate and very knowledgable not just about the sites we visited but with regards to many other sites we were planning on visiting during our stay in Egypt. Entry into the Citadel as well as an explaination was provided and we were set up with a tour guide for the library as we chose to add this on to our tour. Our driver was a great guy, very clean car and the A/C was welcome. If you are at all interested in the Hellinistic period of Egypt I would highly recommend this day tour.

the drive to Alexandria from Cairo was very enjoyable. And the city has a different vibe and is very different to any other city in Egypt and resembles a European city. The sites covered were also interesting, special call out to catacombs! Our guide Nimrin was friendly and knowledgable.

This Alexandria day tour is a complete waste of a day when staying in Cairo. We were assigned the company Egypt Best Day Tours. There is a 3 hour drive each way and a guide that is not very personable makes for a long day. The catacombs were the highlight of this day trip where anything else that would have been interesting was not included. This tour did not include a tour of going inside the citadel or even the Library. Just a brief stop by to stand outside them and be told about them for 5 minutes. We unfortunately ended up with a tour guide who seemed uncaring and rushed it. Make sure to do research on the tour to Alexandria to make sure you receive a tour guide who will make it worth while as ours did not

Our final tour in Egypt was in Alexandria. Again, Viator delivered a top shelf guide, Yussef. The tour was fabulous. From Pompey's Pillar to the Catacombs, to the lunch overlooking the Mediterranean. Spectacular tour, spectacular guide!
