Overview

We wanted to do the Summer Palace and Great Wall but then head directly to the airport afterwards, and it was really flexible to get that added to our schedule. Our driver, Jim, had all the tickets ready, got us tickets for the chair lift / toboggan as well, and everything was really smooth. WeChat was easily used to coordinate everything.

Amazing but exhausting

So lucky we booked this private trip as unbeknown to us, this day happened to be a public holiday and this means CHAOS in China. We are not early risers so we originally booked for 10am departure but the tour company got in touch and strongly recommended to leave at 6am rather. We reluctantly accepted but thank science we did as the masses at the Great Wall would have otherwise been a killer. So early we managed to avoid the worst and even got some great photos with hardly any people around. We paid extra for the ski lift ride to the top and the toboggan chute back down and were glad we did as the wall itself is exhausting as hell. Much steeper than you'd expect from pictures but well worth doing as it's just amazing to stand up there and looking at the seemingly never-ending wall. The second part of our trip was the Summer Palace and on a crazily busy day like this one, we wouldn't do it again in hindsight. Not the drivers fault at all but by the afternoon when we arrived here, it was an absolute mess. People everywhere, cold drinks sold out at almost all the vending stalls and walking once around that entire lake takes aaaages, especially when there are people taking phots of each other in your way at every possible spot. Yes, it's a beautiful park and might be great on a less busy day but it's very exhausting and tiring to do together with the wall. One word about our driver: This tour is including and English speaking driver and that's precisely what you get- not a tour guide, a driver, they tend to be quite literal about these things in China. We were quite happy not happing to engage too much this early in the morning or totally exhausted in the end of the day but while courteous and friendly, the driver indeed was more of an introvert. So if you want someone to tell you about the history of the wall or even just to do some chit chat on your way, then a different tour would probably a better choice.

Très bien organisé par l’agence et fiable, cela vaut vraiment le coup de mettre le prix pour cette expérience - c’est confortable quand on sait que ça ne peut pas être évident de prendre d’autres itinéraires (métro + bus…) pour faire ces deux excursions. Super chauffeur qui vous accompagne même au guichet pour vous aider à avoir vos tickets, très accueillant nous avons adoré notre journée merci beaucoup !

Superbes endroits qui peuvent se conjuguer en une journée. J’aurais souhaité de meilleurs conseils pour mieux optimiser la journée, ex possibilité de partir plus tôt le matin de l’hôtel, conscientiser en suggérant de prendre le toboggan pour descendre, qu’implique une interminable file en haut (avoir su je serais redescendue en chaise), au Palais d’été suggérer un sens pour débuter la marche pour assurer de voir les principaux sites. Avons bcp apprécié par ailleurs la flexibilité du chauffeur qui a accepté de prolonger l’excursion d’une heure afin d’avoir 2h au Palais d’été!
