Checkpoint after checkpoint. Hours queuing to get in . Hot as hell.
Nice big square with architectural buildings of historical and cultural value. Too much trouble searched 10 times in one day a bit ott!
Cameras and barriers everywhere.
Response from Host, Feb 2026
Dear Paul,
Thank you for taking the time to share your honest experience of visiting Tiananmen Square. We fully understand your inconvenience caused by the entry procedures, queuing time and frequent security checks during your visit, and we sincerely apologize for the unpleasant feelings this has brought to you.
Tiananmen Square, as a place with important historical and cultural significance, has strict security check measures to ensure the safety of every visitor and the normal order of the scenic spot, which may have led to your cumbersome experience in the process of entering and visiting. We will also forward your valuable feedback to the relevant management department, hoping to optimize the visiting process as much as possible on the premise of ensuring safety and bring a more comfortable visiting experience for tourists.
We are glad that you recognized the historical and cultural value of the architectural buildings in the square. Again, sorry for the trouble caused to your trip, and we look forward to your understanding and hope to welcome you again with a better experience.
Best Regards

Tiananmen Sq entry is actually free of charge. However, one must have reservations to enter, and unless one lives there and is Chinese literate, use Viator. Their booking fee is reasonable, reliable, user-friendly and quick.
Response from Host, Jan 2026
Dear Guest,
"Tiananmen Square is indeed free to enter, but advance reservations are required. For most visitors—those who are not local residents or Chinese-speaking—it’s highly recommended to use Viator for booking. Their service is reliable, user-friendly, and offers reasonable fees with quick processing."

Be prepared for the crowds.
We arrived before 10am, and there were already many visitors clearing the security checks to enter the square. As we were concerned about the waiting time before we could reach the square, we decided to turn back and proceed to the Forbidden City instead, not wanting to risk our booking for the morning session.
It is advisable to plan to visit Tiananmen Square early in the morning, if you are also visiting the Forbidden City.
Response from Host, Nov 2025
Dear Lim,
Firstly, arriving at Tiananmen Square at 10 o'clock during peak season is not the best time because most tourists arrive at this time and the security checkpoint is extremely long. The off-season will be much better. Generally, I suggest that during peak season, you must enter the square before 8am or after 4pm. In this way, the waiting time in the queue will be much shorter.
Also, it is important to remind tourists to make an appointment in advance, otherwise you will have to wait in line for a long time and find out that you have not reserved a ticket, and still cannot enter. That would definitely be very bad.

Tickets provided with no issues but long queue to pass through security and associated checks made us wonder if it was worth it.
Response from Host, Oct 2025
Dear Neil,
Thank you for sharing your experience.
Yes, the security line always takes long time during the holidays. That's why we strongly suggest visiting the Square in the slow season or very early in the morning or evening. It will be much better. To be honest, it's something that we can't control. The thing we can do for you is make the reservation in advance while you have the permit to get in there.

yongmengwah, Sep 2025
The tickets worked. The only disappointment is that we waited in line for 2.5 hrs for the security check. Thought that the checks are excessive esp when most only walk the open areas. Will never go again. Not worth the wait. Can just take photos from far.
Response from Host, Sep 2025
Dear Yong,
Thank you for the feedback.
I've heard that the queue time was particularly long today, and I think it's because we held a world-renowned military parade on September 3rd. Resulting in a significant increase in tourists. The waiting time for security check is too long. I feel very sorry, but there's nothing we can do about it. What we can do is help you book admission tickets in advance. The strickly security check , the long queue is beyond our control.

Not sure why but the Main Square was shut so we were blocked to one side towards the Forgotten City, huge queue to get there too. Not worth it. However the next day on the way to the train station in a taxi, on passing the Square it was full of people and limited queues at the entrance. We went on a Friday, not sure if there was an event or Froday they close the square.
Response from Host, Jun 2025
Dear Guy,
Yes, I agree. After successfully entering the square, you will indeed feel that waiting in such a long queue is not worth it. But if you come to Beijing without entering the square, you will leave a huge regret. We cannot reduce the waiting time of the security check queue. We will try our best to provide you with convenient appointment services. Only through our appointment can you have the opportunity to queue up for security check and enter the square.
I strongly recommend avoiding the peak tourist season and Chinese statutory holidays.

Karolina_S, Jun 2025
Entrance to the Square is free but you need to register online with a Chinese number. So this service is a good solution for tourists. I had to change the date and there was no problem. The registration was checked by the police on site. Be prepared for long queue (mine was 1 hour) and very thorough bag search.
Response from Host, Jun 2025
Dear Karolina
Thank you very much for your feedback. Tiananmen Square is the largest city center square in the world and also the political center of China. It is inspected and reserved by the police, and under normal circumstances, there are five entrances open here. If you encounter Chinese holidays, you need to patiently queue up to enter. If there is a local application, it is free. We offer Tiananmen Square booking services at a very low service fee. I hope this can help tourists in need.

Everything went according to plan. We entered the square several times that day and there was no problem. But they checked the reservation every time, so it is rather difficult to enter without it

It worked well but the weren’t many indications about how to proceed, where exaxtly to go. If you can speak Chinese, you can get this ticket for free on WeChat
Response from Host, May 2025
Dear Antoine,
Thank you for the feedback.
Tiananmen Square is the biggest city center square in the world and it's the political center of China. There are 5 entrances opens during the normal days. But it may temporarily closed of some entrances or all the entrances without any notification when some important person coming to visit China. That's why it's hard for us to provide more indications how to proceed during the day.
It's free of charge if you have local App. We offer the Tiananmen Square reservation services at a very low service fee. I hope it can help tourists in need.

Response from Host, May 2025

Due to the rain, there were fewer people queuing up.
Lose at sunrise and gain at sunset.
Thanks for the support.

Anna_R, Nov 2024
I booked a ticket for Tiananmen Square through Viator, only to find out later that entrance to the square is actually free. I felt misled, as I paid for something that didn’t require a ticket at all. If you’re visiting China, I recommend verifying entry fees or checking directly with your hotel before booking through a third-party platform. While I appreciate that Viator’s customer service quickly refunded me, I’d suggest looking into other booking options to avoid similar issues.
Response from Host, Nov 2024
Dear Anna,
Your feedback can really mislead many tourists. If we hadn't made an reservation for you in advance, how could you have entered the square. Without the reservation in advance, nobody would allowed to visit the Tiananmen Square now. The square is indeed free of charge if you make a reservation yourself. The current problem is that most foreign tourists cannot make reservations because you do not have a China small program reservation system. We offer extremely low reservation service fees to help you smoothly enter the square. This job requires manual labor, which requires wages. So, I hope that you could understand that the reservation service is not free.
After successfully entering the square, you didn't feel how to appreciate it. You not only threatened a refund with a negative review, but also gave us a one star negative review after the refund was successful. It's really hard to understand.
The Best
Lily

Excellent service. We didn't have to worry about trying to do it on our own through the government site. Wish they would have told us there would be a marathon there the day we went as we would fact changed dates, but we wouldn't have known on our own. We weren't able to go in because it was fully closed. Just got to see it from across the street.
Response from Host, Nov 2024
Dear Daniel,
You could able too see the Tiananmen Square accross the street, that means it's not fully closed at all. Because the street is a part of the Square. Without the reservation, you even can't get to the street where could able to see the center of the Square.

alexgrigorescu, Nov 2024
One needs to register (for free) to see Tiananmen Square. The square itself is apparently the largest in the world, but also among the ugliest. It takes a long time to get in and there is very little to see. Only worth going to say that you were there. Of course, it is not the tour operator's fault ... but this is more about the overall experience than about them.
Response from Host, Nov 2024
Dear Alex,
The Tiananmen Square is free of Charge to visit. But without reservation, you can't visit the Tiananmen Square at all. But the problem is most of foreigners cann't reserve it. We charge very little money to help you make the resevation. And we need to hire and pay employee to make this reservation in the system.
Tiananmen Square is the center of city and which is also the political center of China. It plays huge roles in our history till to nowadays. You need to learn more about it, you will know it’s special.
