What a beautiful day on the water. Very little wind, sunny, and the water was deep blue perfection. The guide was fantastic and super knowledgeable. The crew was kind and attentive but also left us alone so we could fully experience the peace and tranquility of the open water. We saw three different pods of Harbor Dolphins and many birds. Thank you for this amazing day at sea.

This was a wonderful morning journey exploring the bay. Although we did not see any whales while on the morning safari we however did see a few dolphins pods feeding and also saw a few babies. We also saw the fin of a hammerhead shark and plenty of blue penguins. The team onboard, Kelly, George, Laurie and Emily were really knowledgeable. Definitely would highly recommend.

Meeting and Pickup

Meeting point

  • Eastern Viaduct, Auckland CBD, Auckland 1010, New Zealand

Our boat is at Berth 9, Eastern Viaduct Marina, accessed from the end of Quay Street heading West. This is opposite the Maritime Museum. On arrival look for our crew at the top of our boarding ramp to check in 30 minutes before departure (check-in closes 15 minutes prior to trip time).

End point

This activity ends back at the meeting point.

What To Expect

Meet the boat crew at the top of the ramp near Berth 9, in the Eastern Viaduct Marina, opposite the Maritime Museum, and depart aboard a custom-built 65-foot (20-meter) catamaran, comfortably appointed so you can best view up to six types of whales as well as dolphins and other marine life.

Throughout your 4.5-hour cruise, the captain and guides entertain you with fascinating facts about the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park, home to five marine preserves and sprinkled with islands — it's considered one of the world’s most biologically diverse marine parks and home to some 23 different species.

Hear about research conducted in partnerships with local marine scientists and discover which whales the crew tracks. They’ll point out sea mammals such as frequently spotted pods of bottlenose dolphins and Bryde’s whales, native to New Zealand.

Be ready to snap photos of adorable blue penguins. Set your binoculars upon seabirds such as Australasian gannets, petrels, shearwaters and white-fronted terns soaring above or plunging into the sea.

Afterward, the boat returns to Auckland’s Viaduct Harbour, where your tour ends.

Please note: While wildlife viewings cannot be guaranteed, dolphins and whales are often swimming around these waters. In the event that you do not see any marine mammals during your trip, you can go again another day at no extra charge.

Dolhpins by the dozen

Bradley_C, Mar 2026
A perfect day on a very good boat for watching sea life. The guides were all degreed in dolphins etc and used the tour to gather scientific data on what we saw. Following bird signs in the huge bay, we found two huge pods of dolphins who played for us in the bow pressure wave in clear waters. They estimated one pod at 80 including a baby and we had easily a dozen playing right under our feet in the twin bows of the catamaran. In between sightings were video lectures on what we were seeing and the scientific studies in the bay. For those who wanted a snack, the galley had a variety of foods. Viewing indoors and out had the weather not been so beautiful.

Great dolphins watch.

Sampath_C, Mar 2026
I loved this tour, watched around 25 dolphins for such a long time as they were swimming so close to our catamaran. I also loved to see dozens of the birds diving into the ocean and observed a whale.

Best crew ever

Carolyn_P, Mar 2026
I gotta give a solid shoutout to our crew for the day my husband and I went with! Let’s hear it for George, Laurie, Hannah, Toni and Graeme! I was so impressed with their knowledge and love of the marine life. It was quite impressive! Their excitement and love was palpable. It was a very safe ride and we were always reminded to hold on and when we’d possibly get wet (I loved staying right in the front!). We were able to spot penguins, gannets, dolphins and a Bryde’s whale! They were determined to give us a good look at him without overstepping boundaries and keeping him safe. My only disappointment was not seeing any orcas but I knew that was a longshot! I highly recommend this tour when visiting Auckland.

Dolphin & Whale trip

John_P, Mar 2026
It was a well worth visit with plenty of interactions with dolphin pods and a Whale . Well worth the cost. The crew were friendly and informative throughout

Wonderful Day of Safari!

Lauren_M, Mar 2026
We had a truly lovely time spotting all kinds of different animals including native blue penguins, hammerhead sharks, dolphins, and plenty of seabirds. The crew of Kayla, Emily, Hannah, and Benji were delightful and informative. I learned about phytoplankton, gannets, and of course- about cetaceans. Our initial trip was booked for the morning, but unfortunately we weren't able to see any mammals. The team immediately gave us vouchers, and we were able to get on that afternoon's safari which is when we saw everything I listed above. The boat was super comfortable, and the scenery was beautiful. I highly recommend this safari!

Response from Host, Mar 2026

Kia Ora, Thank you for your kind words! What an amazing array of marine mammal sightings you experienced! We’re so glad our crew left such a positive impression as well. Wishing you safe travels ahead! Many Thanks, Madeline and the AWADS Team

Very Informative

Rico_D, Mar 2026
We didn’t see any whales on this trip but we saw several common dolphins. Some came close to the boat. Fascinating animals. These trips main function is to collect data to understand the beautiful creatures they encounter. We are glad our fair contributes towards this cause.

Response from Host, Mar 2026

Kia Ora Rico_D, Thank you for taking the time to leave a review! We’re sorry the whales were a bit shy during your trip, but glad you still got to see some dolphins. We really appreciate you choosing to join us onboard! Many Thanks, Madeline and the AWADS Team

Heart stopping dolphin viewing

Gladys_S, Mar 2026
I debated on giving four stars or five. Decided you guys deserve the 5 because my discomfort was not within your realm of control. The team was outstanding providing detailed instructions for the group’s safety and making every effort to see to our enjoyment. Seeing the dolphins up close and personal was an amazing experience. No whale sightings but the dolphins and birds provided a spectacular show. Photos provided for purchase but wish the link were emailed in addition to QR code onsite.

Excellent experience would highly recommend but wouldn't take small children. Crew were very attentive if you felt unwell.

Awesome day out

Sandra_S, Feb 2026
This trip was amazing! There's no guarantee what you might see & unfortunately we didnt see any whales but we were so lucky to see a whole pod of dolphins feeding. It was amazing to see how they chased the fish Into a tight group to feed on & also to watch the birds torpedoing Into the ocean. There were also 5 baby dolphins in the pod & one was seen drinking milk from it's mother. We were also lucky to have great weather conditions with a glassy ocean at one point. We also got to see little 'blue' penguins. The crew were friendly & informative & clearly care about the ocean & everything in it. Altogether a great experience.

Great day!

Lisa_F, Feb 2026

Wonderful Tour!

Valerie_V, Feb 2026
We thoroughly enjoyed our safari! The day was perfect weather, moderate waves and we saw over 100 (according to our crew) dolphins! No whales but that’s okay! All in all a great day on the water.

Unfortunately no dolphins...

Leo_S, Feb 2026
Unfortunately no dolphins or whales were sighted. They gave us a voucher but it’s effectively useless since we are tourists. I don’t know what their success rate. Otherwise the boat was nice and clean, there were snacks available to buy. The crew was very friendly and excited whenever we came across a’workup’ of fish and birds hoping there would be mammals too.

Response from Host, Mar 2026

Kia Ora Leo_S, Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We understand that you may not be able to use your voucher on this trip, which is why our Complimentary Vouchers never expire. You’re welcome to use it anytime, whether soon or further in the future, and we’d love to welcome you back on board. We’re fortunate to enjoy one of the highest marine-mammal viewing rates in New Zealand, and only a small percentage of guests (less than 5%) are unlucky not to see dolphins or whales with us. Wishing you safe travels ahead! Many Thanks, Madeline and the AWADS Team

Very informative outing, ofcourse sighting of Dolphins and whales is your luck. We could see only number of dolphns.i

ANIL_K, Feb 2026

Beautiful day on the...

Diane_B, Feb 2026
Beautiful day on the ocean. We saw a pod of dolphins but no whales. It took a bit to find them which is reason for not getting 5 stars.

Too many dolphins to count!

Dan_S, Feb 2026
Great experience! We didn’t see the whales but did see hundreds of dolphins! Crew was excellent in making sure everyone was doing OK as we navigated the ocean. Never stopped searching for the dolphins and whales.

Orca breaches the water

Brian_B, Feb 2026
Though we saw no whales, nor dolphins or sharks… we did enjoy a rare visit from a pod or Orcas and it was spectacular! Hope to able to try again soon. Cheers!

Whale and Dolphin tour

Janet_B, Feb 2026
We saw one half hour of dolphins and no whales. However, they worked diligently to find them. Not sure if it worth the money.

Response from Host, Feb 2026

Kia Ora Janet_B, Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We’re sorry to hear that, although you were able to see some dolphins, the marine life was relatively shy on your day of travel. We’re very fortunate to enjoy one of the highest marine-mammal viewing rates in New Zealand, and our expert crew are always working tirelessly to help you spot whales and dolphins. However, as we’re working with wild animals in their vast natural environment, sometimes they simply choose not to be seen. We hope you’ll join us again in the future and have better luck with sightings. Wishing you safe travels ahead! Many Thanks, Madeline and the AWADS Team

Fantastic trip bay of islands

SHAUN_J, Feb 2026
Staff on the boat were honestly brilliant great vibe very well organised gave out so much information on all islands fantastic trip Skipper & mate were great travelled on the 2/2/26

Great experience especially in good weather

Michelle_K, Feb 2026
Had a great time on this trip especially as we had a dolphins, including a calf, swim with the boat for about 15-20 minutes. Sadly we didn’t see any whales. All the staff were helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. The PA system was great and very clear. The only negative was there’s very little seating except indoors and some at the back of the boat but the front, where most people want to be for the best experience, was seriously uncomfortable. Maybe they could have some cushions available ?

Monster Bait Ball

William_C, Jan 2026
The seas on that day were rough, my friend. Away from the George Costanza quote, the sea off Auckland was pretty rough on the day we’d scheduled our dolphin and whale outing with the Eco Safari crew but we were forewarned and offered alternatives. In spite of the seas, the cruise was very well attended. The first few hours of the cruise were looking unsuccessfully in likely places for dolphins and/or whales. We particularly looked at where the gannets and gulls were congregating to feast from huge transient schools of small fish. The crew’s knowledge, experience and patience paid off toward the end of the cruise when dozens of dolphins started streaking through a giant bait ball adjacent to our position, identified by the sea birds. We had a front row seat to the fascinating show and the captain kept us front-and-center to the frenzied action for over 30 minutes. We were on the upper deck where the wave action was more pronounced but we did fine and were no issues with us with seasickness. The entire crew were friendly and very knowledgeable about our environment and prey species. Even if we hadn’t seen these marine mammals, it was a nice, enjoyable cool day on the water.

Amazing experience.

Steven_P, Jan 2026
Had an absolutely amazing time! Managed to get some amazing video of the Dolphins playing at the front of the boat which was so impressive. Sadly no Whales on the day, maybe next time. Crew were very friendly, helpful and knowlegable makung the experience very rewarding. We would highly recommend this activity to anybody visiting Auckland, you wont be disapointed.

Excellent Water Tour!

David_B, Jan 2026
