Trent, our tour guide, was so wonderful!! This was an all day tour and he made sure to point out all of the sites along the way to Roturua and answered any questions we had. He provided snacks and drinks and made sure we were comfortable during our tour. Seeing the Glow Worms was amazing!!!! And so were the geysers at Te Puia! We highly recommend taking this tour!

The tour was a full day but well worth it. We had enough rest stops and good food stops. The glow worms and Maui cultural area tours were both excellent. Our guide, Dave, was excellent. He addressed everyone’s needs and provided all with information relative to our excursions.

It was an amazing day. We were blessed Liam our driver and tour guide and his associate John. The two were great with stories and historical facts. The countryside was awesome. Liam is a decendant of the Mauri people and entertained us with wonderful tales a facts and legends. A long but well worth the 13 hour trip. We now have a new family!

The prospect of a 13-hour tour, most of it on the road, was daunting at first, but we were able to stop regularly for bathroom breaks and to stretch our legs, and Pearl was a knowledgeable and fun guide. More than adequate time was spent at each attraction, and the tour did not feel hectic. Very much enjoyed the entire experience.

we thank Matt for the local experience. thanks for having a WhatsApp group i was scared of missing up and did not have local number. Matt took care of us and made clear explanation and drove us.
we stopped at a cafe for breakfast, time to get your own lunch at te puia. Some chips along the way and water.
it’s a little cold inside the cave. And steps inside, no photos allowed. Loved the boatride.
recommended for adults or people who can control themselves when visiting the kiwi

The tours were great. The pickup was early but seeing the length of time needed to get to the different attractions is understandable.
Enjoyed the Glow worms, and the boat tour.
The volcanic activity was exciting and the information regarding the Kiwi, and Maori culture was appreciated.
A small problem as the short time that was given for Breakfast and lunch but can be explained due to the time constraints.

Great to hear you enjoyed the full experience, from the glowworm caves through to the geothermal sights and cultural insights. You’ve summed it up well, it’s an early start and a full day, but it’s all about fitting in those key highlights.
We appreciate your note on the timing around meals too, it’s a bit of a balancing act with the distances involved, but helpful feedback all the same.
We’d love to welcome you back for more adventures in the future. Until then, safe travels and thanks again for choosing Cheeky Kiwi!

“A new family” is a pretty special way to describe a day on tour, thank you for that. It sounds like a long journey that was filled with the right mix of stories, history, and those big New Zealand landscapes that make the hours roll by a bit faster. Liam has a real gift for sharing Māori history and legends in a way that feels personal and engaging, and it’s great to hear John added to that with extra knowledge and stories along the way.
Thirteen hours is no small day, so we’re really glad it felt worthwhile and memorable from start to finish. Comments like yours remind us how much the people on the bus shape the experience just as much as the places we visit.

Waitomo Caves & Te Puia w/ tour guide Ben
Jonathan_E, Dec 2025
Our tour guide Ben gave us an incredible and packed experience, he kept the tone light and was super accommodating for all our needs! With the tour itself, the Glowworm cave was a unique experience, especially the boat tour segment where we saw hundreds of glowworms above us. Te Puia was also great, being able to see live kiwis up close, watching the geyser erupt, and learning about Māori culture. 10/10 tour, my family and I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Response from Host, Dec 2025
Kia ora Jonathan,
That really does sound like a full and memorable day. It’s great to hear Ben struck the right balance between keeping things light and making sure everyone was well looked after. That glowworm boat ride has a way of quietly blowing people away, and pairing it with Te Puia’s geysers, kiwi encounter, and Māori culture makes for a pretty special mix.
I’m especially glad your whole family enjoyed it together. That’s exactly what we aim for with these longer days out.
Thanks for choosing to travel with us and for sharing such thoughtful feedback. We’d love to have you back for another adventure down the track.

Great to be in small group, added to the fun of the day getting to know a bit about the others. Terrific sites we visited highly recommend them. Timing was great, enough time for lunch and shopping. Simon our guide was very helpful and gave us lots of info about the sites and New Zealand.

Loved reading this. Small groups really do make it easy to chat and share the day with new faces, so it’s great to hear that added to the fun for you. The glow worms, geysers and Māori culture at Te Puia are pretty special sights and it sounds like you made the most of every stop. Awesome that the timing worked well too with space for lunch and a browse.
Really glad Simon helped make the day smooth and informative. He takes a lot of pride in sharing Aotearoa with visitors and it means a lot to hear that it landed well.

This was a great way to see two of the main attractions from Auckland. Even though it is a long day, our guide Ben was fantastic and made it fun the whole way. Thank you Cheeky Matt!!! The day was phenomenal. The drive is filled with beautiful scenery, got to try some delicious meat pies, saw some glow worms (definitely a must see). Went to the Te Puia Center that was filled with so much to see and learn about. The guide that took us in Te Puia was very knowledgable and truly made the whole experience. Hearing him speak in his native tongue teaching us of the land was very much informative. If you have the time you should definitely do this tour. Our driver Matt was a delight and was very knowledgeable about NZ as well as other things to do while here. Thanks for letting me be Co Captain for the day! It was truly a lovely experience, I cannot wait to come back to NZ. Oh and you get to see a baby kiwi :0 Lastly, bring a some snacks it is a long day!

Long day of driving but we enjoyed the day
Lucy_S, Nov 2025
Matt was a great driver and he drove and kept us entertained for over 12 hours. It’s a long day of driving. It didn’t bother us so much but maybe that was because the bus was nice. The two main stops are both worthwhile but really the whole area outside of Auckland is the most amazing part. I did learn a lot from all of the guides. It was nice to see so many young people do proud of their heritage.

Daniel_S, Oct 2025
Simon with CheekyKiwi was such a cheerful, passionate and knowledgeable guide! Our favorite part was the kiwis and we also loved learning about the craftsmanship of the Māori people, so much so we almost forgot about the way-cool glowworms and cave at the start of the day! Beautiful drive but it is a lot of time sitting in a car (6+ hours). That’s the only caveat I’d place for my fellow travelers.
Response from Host, Nov 2025

Great day trip before the travel home
Richard_D, Oct 2025
This was a perfect day trip out of Auckland. I only had one day where I wasn’t working and wanted to see some things I couldn’t see elsewhere. Between the caves and the geothermal fields, it was a good day. What took it over the top was the driver for the tour, Jeoff. His friendliness and knowledge of the area as a fifth generation Kiwi was unmatched. Very friendly and also a good driver. Although there is a great deal of time in the bus for this tour, it went by quickly while we learned about the Maori culture and the country of New Zealand. I would recommend this trip to anyone with limited time and wanting to see some things outside of Auckland.
