Our Tour starts at 6:30am heading south with everyone already picked up across the Auckland CBD and on board. The pickups, depending on location in the CBD of where you are staying, occur in the preceding 20-25minutes. We pick up from all centrally Located Auckland Hotels, BNBs, Backpacker Hotels in the Central Business District. Any of the following or others(not mentioned) in the Central Business District. We do not pick up from the suburbs of Auckland We also have only 1 pick up location in South Auckland/Auckland Airport area which is the Sebel Manukau Hotel, 16 Lakewood Court, Manukau (approx 10 minutes from the airport)t. Begin the day with pickup at your hotel in central Auckland and head south over the Bombay Hills and across the Hauraki Plains to a sheep farm in Matamata, better known to J.R.R. Tolkien fans as the Shire.
On a guided tour of the Hobbiton™ Movie Set, see recognizable scenes created for "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" films and learn the secrets and stories behind the creation of Middle-earth. Take in stellar views of the Kaimai Ranges as you visit meticulously crafted sets including Hobbit Holes, the Mill, and the Green Dragon Inn, where you can even enjoy a specially brewed drink fit for a Baggins.
After the tour, trade Hobbit trivia with your fellow travelers over a Kiwi-style lunch at a café.
Next, embark on an underground adventure at the Waitomo Glowworm Caves, where thousands of tiny worms illuminate the caverns. Watch the mesmerizing natural light show while gliding through the cave on a boat, and learn about the area’s natural and cultural history from a guide—likely a descendant of the Māori chief who originally discovered the caves. You also explore on foot Cathedral Cave, known for its impressive acoustics.

This tour was even better than I expected. Rachel, our tour guide, was lovely and friendly, which was especially nice since I suffer from motion sickness, so I sat up front.
I already can’t wait to go back to Hobbiton, and the Waitomo caves nearly brought me to tears.
My only note would be that, while the cafe offers gluten free options, it is very much not safe for Celiac, and folks should prepare for that. I brought food, just in case, but if I hadn’t, it would have been a long day without eating.

Great day.
Our tour guide, Rachel, was very sweet and informative. She made the long drive better with her balance of educational commentary and quiet time. She played themed music when we neared Hobbiton. She explained what we were to expect before each part of our trip. Well rounded excursion. We got lunch (part of the tour, which was a nice surprise) and she had great recommendations. We stopped for ice cream (we paid) on the way back and had plenty of bathroom opportunities through the whole day. Our tour group got along and ended up meeting up after for quiz night in downtown and Rachel joined us! Got to see the sunrise and the sunset on the excursion. Promptly picked up from my hotel. And dropped off there too. Perfect tour to see and experience so much. Would definitely recommend and do this excursion again if I make it back to Auckland.

The Hobbiton and Waitomo Caves experience was the highlight of our time in Auckland. It was a perfectly organised day thanks to our talented, knowledgeable, and friendly guide Rachel. It was incredible to not need to worry about logistics and be looked after and entertained all day. The additional history and stories that Rachel shared on our journey to Hobbiton and the Waitomo Caves heightened the excitement and made our visits even more magical. Rachel also did a fantastic job of introducing and caring for our tour group, which created a jolly sense of camaraderie all day.
The journey was well paced, and the provided lunch stop was filling for me. I also appreciated the mini break we took in the morning for coffee, and the home stretch break for ice cream. Thanks again Rachel for a top-notch day.

We leave as there is only 1 road south out of Auckland and we must beat the early morning peak hour traffic going south out of Auckland as what should take only 30 minutes to leave greater Auckland can otherwise take 2-3 times that and then the risk is missing our tour times. Tracy (GT!) was absolutely amazing. I was not just entertained but thoroughly educated about so many interesting and relevant things. Kiwi music and traditions. Crazy ice cream flavors. And if course about Hobbiton and countless things along the way. She went out of her way to make our group’s trip delightful. I also appreciated the information she prepared on cards for touring NZ. I even quite liked her cow trivia lol. I’ve had many tour guides in 2 weeks from Australia to New Zealand and Tracy was my very favorite!

This was an amazing experience if you like the Lord of the Rings/Hobbit movies and if you enjoy a quiet, beautiful experience which the glow worm caves delivered in spades. My driver was Mike and he was an extremely nice and out going guy. The drive to and from was a LOT longer than I thought and made me glad I booked a tour over saving a small bit of money by renting a car. Make sure you book ahead as this tour can fill up fast.

You cannot avoid the travel as you experienced as the attractions are 2 hours south of Auckland, but we mitigate that but the specially and exclusively designed route that we travel which we see as a 3rd attraction. My family with an age range of 8 years to 80 years had fun with this tour. The Hobbiton was an immersive experience especially being in one of the houses where you can touch and feel everything. The Glowworm cave is beautiful and out of this world experience as well. The combined tour is perfect for a whole day activity. It wasn't rush and the pace is just right.

This was a great experience! Our guide, Danny was very knowledgeable and gave our tour group a lot of information about New Zealand. He even made a bonus stop for a couple of younger kids in the van a chance to feed an ostrich. For the rest of us, we stopped for ice cream on the way back to Auckland, definitely go with his recommendation of hokey pokey or boysenberry flavors. The Hobbiton tour was excellent and a lot of fun as was the Waitomo cave tour, although we enjoyed the Hobbiton tour more. The Waitomo cave tour seemed to be a little light on staff members as we were split into 2 different boats and at the end of the tour, for our boat, there was no staff around to let us know how and where to exit. The included lunch was very tasty as there were a variety of options available.

Our tour guide, Mike, was very friendly and professional. He made sure everyone in the group felt welcome and really made the atmosphere in the bus great. I mainly went for the Hobbiton experience and found it exceeded expectations. The glow worm cave was also really impressive. The day has been such a highlight of my whole holiday I am really glad I went.

This was one of the best tours I have ever done. Our tour guide Rachel was such a good guide and such a lovely, friendly and intelligent woman. Hobbiton was out of this world and the caves were so magical. I’d do it again tomorrow if I could. The stop for an early coffee as the sun came up and then another stop for Hokey Pokey ice-cream at sunrise was the cherry on top. The peaceful music playing on the bus was fab as were all the facts we got along the way! It was my first day in NZ and I was blown away by how sound and kind and genuine Kiwis are. Liam was an amazing and knowledgeable tour guide who was very personable and fun! Not only did he give us a mini tour and history lesson of the city but he made an excel sheet that was color coded by district of the city with his favorite near by restaurants and experiences! Any questions we had he answered and his conversation was very easy going and he was able to get everyone on our trip talking and connected with each other even though we were from all over the world. We had the most amazing time during this tour! Our driver, Mike, kept us in laughter with his trivia of New Zealand and captivating personality during our travels. The Hobbiton experience was exceptional and exciting to see/learn all aspects of the Shire. Our tour guide was so knowledgeable and gave insights on how certain scenes from the movie were made. The glow worm caves were equally intriguing. Our tour guide gave many stories about the caves and seeing the glow worms in total darkness was awe inspiring!
