Great Meteora Day Trip from Athens

Long day but what a great experience! Our guide Vasilis (I beleive that is correct) was excellent - very informative, funny, and always willing to help people get pictures with the monasteries as a backdrop. We had more than enough time inside each monastery. We would have liked the option to see Holy Trinity Monastery with the stairs, but I understand it takes extra time and isn't realistic for a group tour. For the tour operator: we had a lot of time at the last monastery (run by the nuns) but the 2nd one had more to see inside and better views. Swapping the allotted times would help. Logistics: Brunch stop ∼2 hours after leaving Athens, lunch ∼90 mins later just outside Meteora, then a few hours at the monasteries. Dinner stop on the way back at the same place as brunch. Back in Athens around 10:30pm. Would definitely recommend it!

Our guide Viktor was fantastic. He was very informative, engaging and really fun! Strongly strongly recommend booking the earliest timeslot for this tour; it gets VERY BUSY. Finding the check-in place is a bit hard but the instructions provided was pretty accurate. Being able to tour the site is a dream come true and I was so glad to have a guide like Viktor who elevated that experience! Sturdy shoes and being sure footed is important; there are a lot of areas where you can easily trip, and when it is crowded, it can get a bit overwhelming. The museum itself is also fascinating on top of what you can see in the National Archaeological Museum.

The guide explained all the important info. She was kind, and knowledgeable. Even in the rain and wind she made it interesting. Ask for Maria as she is the best. We have toured the acropolis before but this was by far the best. Make sure you include the acropolis museum. It’s a must even if you don’t enjoy museums

If you’re going on the...

If you’re going on the tour in the afternoon to try and get sunset photos, just know that will be very weather dependent. We had done the same but it was blustery and we had nice atmospheric pictures of the temple but none with a nice sunset. It was still a wonderful experience, we enjoyed sitting along the cliff and the view of the Aegean.

Quite Possibly the Best Tour I’ve Ever Taken

We had an absolutely incredible experience on this tour, and our driver, Sunday, was a huge reason why. Calling him a driver really doesn’t do him justice. As a former teacher, he was an exceptional guide throughout the day. He gave us exactly the amount of history and context we were hoping for, explaining what we were seeing in a way that was interesting, accessible, and never overwhelming. The logistics were also basically perfect. We were picked up right at the cruise terminal, were able to leave all of our luggage safely in the car for the entire day, and then were dropped off near our hotel at the end. Sunday was incredibly easy to communicate with before and during the tour and always responded promptly. One of the things we appreciated most was being able to experience Athens privately instead of being part of one of the enormous group tours at crowded sites like the Acropolis. Sunday would drop us off in the most convenient location, explain exactly where to go and what to look for, and tell us precisely where to meet him when we were ready. It gave us the freedom to explore at our own pace while still feeling completely taken care of. He also stopped all over the city to take photos of us, adjusted seamlessly to the pace of the day, and helped us see an unbelievable amount of Athens without ever making the experience feel rushed or stressful. He even gave us a fantastic lunch recommendation that led to one of the best meals of our trip. Beyond all of that, Sunday was friendly, funny, charming, patient, and genuinely wonderful to spend the day with. By the end, it felt like we had experienced Athens with someone who truly wanted us to understand and enjoy the city. We travel quite a bit and have done many tours around the world, and this was quite possibly the best tour experience I’ve ever had. I honestly can’t imagine how it could have been any better. If you book this tour and are lucky enough to get Sunday, you are in exceptional hands.

We had Tonia as a tour guide, and she was very friendly and informative. She made it fun, and there was not a dull moment. We had a significant amount of food, enough that all 5 of us were turning away seconds. If you are a big eater you'll be happy for sure. If you are NOT a big eater, I highly suggest you have half portions of each item. The tour mention trying 12 food items, and we probably had even more than that. We all left with leftovers! A lot of sweets and carbs are involved so definitely skip food first!!!

Our guide, Michael G. (Now Dr. Michael G!) was outstanding! His knowledge of this “mythtory” of Greece, the gods, the historic events, the architecture, and the art were so informative. Yes, he had a few corny jokes, but he kept the whole tour group engaged throughout the visit to the Acropolis and to the museum. We learned so much and at a pace that made for a really pleasant tour. We highly recommend it!

Worth it

My wife and I booked this trip after comparing other similar trips and chose this one based on the previous reviews. Previous travelers did not disappoint. The boat was excellent and in great condition. The food was some of the best in Athens so far. The crew was enjoyable and had very clear communication. The islands were very nice and the swimming spots were also excellent. Totally worth taking a day trip. Would do this again.

Our guide Magda was amazing. She took the time to tell us stories which explained the history of Acropolis and the Parthenon so that we could understand what it is we were looking at. The site is incredible and the views from the top were breath taking. She also managed to stay away from the crowds and maneuvered her way to the best viewing areas. Vicki (Vasiliki) was our tour guide and she was amazing! She staged our walk up to the top of the Acropolis to keep us in the shade as much as possible, and went slowly enough so that no one was having difficulty keeping up with the group. Her audio equipment worked efficiently and she had an incredible knowledge of everything!
