Beautiful Meteora
The bus ride of 4 hours each way is a little daunting, but Meteora itself is awe inspiring. There was no commentary at all during the 8 hrs there and back. When we arrived in Kalambaka, we picked up our guide Clement who was lovely and informative. We walked up at least 700 steps, definitely got the cardio today! I don’t remember it being quite as difficult 30+ years ago. Food was cafeteria style, got us in and out. Bathroom stops were clean and ok.

So glad we skipped the group tour and went with Nicholas. Was a great way to experience Holy Meteora. His local perspective gave us a unique insight and found a great restaurant. Really enjoyed the day

Perfect Day
Meteora was my favorite part of my trip to Athens! It’s a really long day but well worth it! Make sure to order your food for brunch & dinner using the QR Code in the bus. We didn’t and there was a bit of a wait to get our food. Be smarter than me and have it waiting for you when you arrive!

Meteora byzantine monasteries perched on top of steep rocks, Greece
  • Wear comfortable shoes, bring sunscreen and water, and prepare to walk---all but one of the monasteries is reached by steep steps.

  • Visitors to the monasteries must have their shoulders and knees covered, and wraps are provided at the entrance.

  • The best options for restaurants and cafés are in Kalampaka, so bring a packed lunch if you plan to spend the day.

  • Be sure to check the opening days and times of the monasteries in advance, as they vary.

  • Plan to visit two or three monasteries on a day tour---to visit all six, you will need a 2-day tour.

  • St. Stephen's Monastery (Agios Stephanos) is the only wheelchair-accessible monastery.
