Itinerary
Start your tour with pickup from your central Vienna hotel by private vehicle. Set out through the Austrian countryside and admire the views as you cross the border into Slovakia and head to Bratislava, Slovakia’s capital and biggest city, perched on the banks of the Danube River.
Meet your local guide and embark on a walking tour of Bratislava’s main attractions, starting with a visit to the medieval Bratislava Castle. After taking in the views from the hilltop castle, stroll around the cobbled lanes of the Old Town, where the pastel-painted houses and pretty medieval squares offer plenty of photo opportunities. Stop to take a peek inside St. Martins Cathedral, renowned for its exquisite stained glass windows; marvel at the modern National Theatre; and pose for photos with the ‘Cumil’ statue, then climb St. Michal’s Tower for another great view over the Old Town.
After the tour, enjoy a few hours of free time to continue sightseeing independently, browse the shops for souvenirs or stop for lunch (own expense) at one of the many cafés and restaurants.
If you’ve chosen the one-way option, your tour ends in Bratislava and you can make your own way to your hotel. Alternatively, depending on the option chosen, return to Vienna by private vehicle or ride back to Austria on the train or ferry.

The worst tour we have ever had through Viator or otherwise. We were traveling as a family with our two children (12, 9). In advance of the tour, I reached out to the tour operator and asked to ensure that the guide knew we were traveling with kids so she could be prepared with the highlights and narrative to suit them. The tour operator got back to me with a curt “you can tell her yourself when you meet her”. That was a sign of more “wonderful” things to come.
As the tour begin we were asked by the driver if we spoke Spanish. He was visibly surprised to hear that we only spoke English (same language in which we booked our tour was). That was the only exchange we had with the driver. The entire drive he didn’t ask a single question (whether the AC was OK, or the music/volume appropriate) or offer any commentary throughout the drive.
Upon arrival in Bratislava we met our guide and she immediately told us that she typically does these tours in Spanish. While I’m very empathetic to anyone struggling with a language, in this case we we had a confirmed English-speaking tour and this guide had a very, very difficult time speaking English. As a result of course, we could barely understand anything she said. Upon meeting our guide, she of course saw our kids, and we asked her to please tailor the story-telling to something our kids could understand, but she couldn’t really understand what we were asking and considering her struggles with the English language, there was no story-telling or tailoring of anything to anyone.
This was a walking tour, so we expected to walk and see the city. The guide was an elderly lady, who also seemed to battling some sort of an injury as she had a very significant limp. This resulted in her walking at an incredibly slow pace. So slow in fact, that we could not to stay behind her without just stopping or walking in place.
Mercifully, the tour ended much earlier that expected, as our tour guide ran of out of things to say or couldn’t walk anywhere anymore.
Our driver returned to pick us up and the entire drive back proceeded to play some local music at such a high volume that we couldn’t ourselves think, not to mention carry a conversation.
Finally, as I reached out to the tour operator and provided a detailed re-telling of the facts and our experience, they not only got defensive, but also started creating narratives that never took place. That they “observed our kids singing in the car” and “appreciated my wife’s apology”. These were complete lies and fabrications as none of these things happened and as opposed to being empathetic and understanding and trying to at the very least be apologetic they either mixed up our tour with another or decided to create their own reality, or are just plainly dishonest.
Stay away from this tour company. HORRENDOUS experience all the way around.

Dear Michael,
Thank you for sharing your feedback. We're genuinely sorry to hear that the tour did not meet your expectations, though we feel it's important to clarify a few points for fairness and transparency.
First, we were quite surprised by the tone of this review, especially considering the private message and apology our driver received from your wife after the tour, which acknowledged that some aspects may have been misunderstood. We had hoped that spirit of understanding would be reflected here as well.
Regarding the language issue: your tour was indeed booked in English, and both the guide and driver were informed of that. The driver, however, greeted your children after they enthusiastically approached him and said “Hola,” which led him to believe your family spoke Spanish. That’s why he asked the language question—not as a sign of unpreparedness, but simply to be polite and clear.
Your guide is an experienced and passionate professional who regularly receives praise for her knowledge and efforts, even when working in her non-native language.
As for the transport, our driver was courteous and followed normal procedure drove you in a new Mercedes Vclass, If music volume or comfort settings were not to your liking, a simple request would have resolved the matter on the spot. No complaints were made at the time.
Finally, we feel it necessary to mention that your follow-up message strongly implied a negative review would follow unless compensation was given. While we always welcome honest, constructive feedback and are more than willing to resolve genuine concerns, we cannot condone or respond to what felt like pressure or blackmail.
We always aim to provide enjoyable, memorable experiences for our guests, and we’re sorry this one didn’t meet your expectations. We wish you and your family the best in your future travels.

Our driver, Tim, was fabulous. A very knowledgeable and courteous driver. We really enjoy the points of interest he shared along the way to Bratislava. The tour guide in town was good. Would have enjoyed more time to explore town, but our legs gave out!

Our trip though short was very nice & great value for our time. The old town & the eateries by the Danube stood out as very attractive. Our driver Peter drove safely & was a support all through. Bratislava guide Veronica, a gem, with her patient smile & great insights in the culture/history of Slovakia.
However expected much more from the palace which was very impressive from outside but had little to offer inside.

Our guide was very friendly and knowledgeable, and Bratislava was an enchanting city. We loved the castle and the old city.

we were collected from our accommodation and driven by car to Bratislava. We were met by our guide, who provided an interesting 3 hour tour of the old town. We then had free time and had a good lunch before returning by car to Vienna. Bratislave was relatively quiet. We learnt about the history of Slovakia. Worth doing when in Vienna as a different day trip.

The weather was windy and bitter cold that day. I was miserably cold, but my tour guide was very supportive and engaging throughout the entire walk. I was so impressed that she didn't let the weather stop her at all. The driver who took me there and back was professional, and I was so thankful that he was amenable to taking me back as soon as the walking tour was done, because I was just too cold to explore anymore. I'm just sad I unknowingly picked such a bad day to see Bratislava! I will have to return in the spring or the fall to thoroughly enjoy it for a full day.

The guide was very informative about the city. IHowever, the driver was very quite the whole trip. Would have been perfect if the driver explain what we were seeing in the countryside.

This is a great introduction to Bratislava! Our guide, 'Susan', was fantastic - providing an overview of the city, its history, its people, and sharing her own personal experiences growing up in Slovakia. She walked us from the palace to the old town, pointing out key historical landmarks and then we had 2 hours on our own. We were picked up in Vienna at 8:30am and returned about 3pm. Note: the hired car/driver is just that - transport and not part of the experience. And Austrian passport control checking for seatbelts on the return is legit.

We had a great time on this tour. Our driver was very nice and punctual. It is only an hour from Vienna to Bratislava so it was a very quick and scenic drive.
Our tour guide Luba was lovely. She is extremely knowledgeable, kind and patient. She made sure to tell us so much history about Slovakia and Bratislava which was amazing. She was kind enough to recommend which food and cafes to try as well which was helpful. We also had an amazing time exploring the Christmas market. I highly recommend this tour.
James_M, Dec 2023
Bratislava is a beautiful city and we can’t wait to return! Rasti was our driver on the way and Peter on the return. Both were excellent drivers. Luba was our local guide and her knowledge of the history was profound! We would recommend this tour!
Thaddeus_P, Dec 2023
What a fantastic time! So worth the money, driver was super nice and interesting, the tour guide was incredible. She kept things moving and was so informative and interesting. We also had about 2.5 hrs on our own to have lunch , shop x MAs markets etc. Could not ask for a better trip.
james_m, Dec 2023
Both our driver and local guide were wonderful. Peter drove us efficiently and professionally. Simon was extremely knowledgeable without being pedantic and took the extra time to show us little interesting sidelights during his thoughtful thorough presentation. We all left promising to return - in no small part due to the presentations of our hosts. Beautiful city; wonderful presentation equal exceptional experience.
James_M, Dec 2023
The tour guide was fantastic!! Very knowledgeable and very considerate of our time. The driver on the transfers was however the opposite experience. He was very unfriendly and not very polite. But the most disturbing fact is that I believe that we were ripped off. On the way over in the morning we did not go through a single check point. On the way back, at night, we stop at a checkpoint and we were charged a total of 100 Euros for not having our seat belts on. The "officer" said that the normal amount was 200 Euros but he was going to except half that amount. Before the "officer " talked with us he talked to the driver in their language which we did not understand and then talked with us in English. I am convinced that this was without a scam. Viator should make sure that they are dealing with honest contractors that do not ripoff foreign tourist.
Response from Host, Dec 2023
Dear James, we are very sorry about your experience, but do you really think its our fault that you got a fine from police for not having seatbelts on? In nearly every country in the world its mandatory to have seatsbels while in car, so all our drivers always tell clients to put seatbelts on and also to have passports ready as you cross borders on this tour, but its always up to clients to respect it. There are usually not any border checks on the way to Slovakia, but there sometimes are on the way back to Austria due to increased immigrants.
We hope you had a great time in Slovakia and liked our tour in general and maybe put your seatbelts on in the future if you are in a foreign country.

My daughter and I had a wonderful day trip to Bratislava. Everything went smoothly and guides were prompt and friendly. We chose hotel pick up and drop off which ended up being the perfect choice for us. The bus and train stations are not directly in old town so this eliminated the stress of trying to navigate. Bratislava old town area is absolutely worth the visit. The architecture is beautiful and the cobblestone streets have many restaurants, coffee shops and stores. Our guide in town did a good job of getting us acclimated before leaving us for our free time. Our driver, Tim, was excellent and very knowledgeable about the sights along the way, history, and the landscape. I highly recommended this trip to anyone.

I had a wonderful time! It was just what I was looking for....beautiful Old Town and a great tour guide! My driver and my private guide were both awesome!
Thanks to both of them!

My driver and guide were punctual and nice. Learned a lot about Bratislava's history from my guide. Had enough time to get a glance of the place and walk around without worrying about transportation arrangement or getting lost. I enjoyed the trip.

Our driver Peter picked us up right on time in front of our hotel. He was very friendly and polite and drove us safely to Bratislava. We met our tour guide Simon who was very knowledgeable and personable. He gave us a great tour! We had a great day in the old town area of Bratislava.

A lovely day in Bratislava. Our driver Peter drove us to the city and offered many insights. Our tour guide Simon was a proud local who shared many interesting historical stories and took time to show us many beautiful places throughout this gem of a city. Would recommend this private tour for anyone seeking a perfect experience.

The entire trip was absolutely wonderful! The pickup in Vienna was prompt, and the car ride was nice. The tour itself was completely top notch….our guide was so knowledgeable and also very friendly. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone for a nice day trip to Bratislava!
dougbastos, Dec 2021
Beautiful city, really worth visiting, our tour guide did a good job explaining the history of Bratislava and showing us the main touristic places. Just a couple of remarks, first we realised that Slovakia was under lockdown when arriving at the country meaning all restaurants including toilets were closed (luckily we found only 1 available). A quick note from the tour operator warning us would be very helpful. Second, I believe it's a matter of wording, in the details of the day tour says "Entry/Admission - Cumil" and "Entry/Admission - Bratislava Old Town", in my view it implies that tickets are required to visit both places, but in the end it turns out that both places are open to the public. I believe it should be replaced by just "Visit to Cumil and Old Town". In general, this visit would be much better without lockdown and good weather, in the day of the tour was raining cats and dogs and temperature under 0 degree, what made things more challenging I would say.
Response from Host, Jan 2022
Thank you for your review, but all Europe is under a certain lockdown, but we operate all our tours, with luxury transfers and local guides, all shops and some restaurants are open for vaccinated people, so our guide took you to them. Cumil is just a statue in the old town and no need of any entry tickets. We hope that all this pandemic will soon end and all our lives will get back to normal.
richard_N, Nov 2021
Our driver was wonderful, the tour director in Bratislava was terrific. A great visit to this historic city.
Karen_N, Oct 2021
The driver picked us up at our ship promptly at 0900. He did not speak English. He was just a driver, so no commentary on the way to Bratislava.
When we arrived we met our guide Linda who took us on a 2 hour walking tour. She was extremely knowledgeable about the city and it’s history. Then we had about 2 1/4 hours of free time to have lunch and shop. Met up with our driver and returned to our ship at 1600.
Response from Host, Oct 2021
Dear Karen,
we are very happy that you liked our tour and the guide in Bratislava, but we are sorry about this driver. On this day we had 5similar tours and we have to admit that after covid it is hard to get back the people that worked in this industry and we are very thankfull for such reviews so we can improve and get new people for busy times.
MarieClaire_R, Feb 2020
Norbert was the best! From the moment we got into the car in Vienna, he was a blast. And pointed out some interesting facts about the history of the Austria and its relationship with Slovakia.
I wish he was our tour guide in Bratislava. The guide we met, Suzanna, was nice and knew a lot about the old town area. She suggested we take an old trolley tour to the castle. This was not included in the tour and made the walking tour with local guide 2 hours only. My mother does have limited mobility so I was happy that she was mindful of the pace of the walking tour.
On the drive back, Norbert took us to a great local restaurant to try Slovakian food. He also drove past the countryside in the way back so we got to see other sites in the way back to Vienna.
Response from Host, Mar 2020
Thank you for such a great review. we try to deliver the best tours in Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, Czech republic and other countries in Europe.
COLMAN_C, Nov 2018
A huge thank you to Ms Lubica Tomastikova and Mr Norbert for the sincere and warm hospitality... it was not merely a tour, it was a friendship experience.

The coldest day of our life! But what a wow experience! Lovely guide, lovely town! We had an amazing tour!
Sylvia W, Jul 2017
I enjoyed the tour very much. My guide I think her name is Vivian was very friendly and flexible . There was a confusion about the pick-up time at the hotel so I arrived in Bratislava about 45 minutes late and she was very accommodating. At my request, she included some Jewish sights. She is very knowledgeable about the history 0f Bratislava and also of its Jewish population. I highly recommend her.
Iris B, Jan 2017
Our driver was great, as was our guide. It snowed quite hard, so our guide just did the tour, by asking the driver to drive around old town before we cut out to walk. But while the local provider was excellent, Viator was not. They did not ever answer my email inquiry, the voucher was wrong it said we still needed to select, and pay for, the return journey, which was not true it said we needed to phone the provider to specify the pick-up point, although I had done that on the phone when making the reservation and when I reached them by phone they insisted, incorrectly, that we would need to pay the driver for the return trip. I felt bullied into agreeing, but happily, the local provider corrected that by email.
