- Chanko nabe, also known as “sumo stew”, is a Japanese stew (hot pot) that contains chicken stock as the soup base with various vegetables. Chanko originated from the Ryokoku area and sumo wrestlers are known to eat a lot of it because a large amount of chanko can be cooked at once and many people can eat at the same time, perfect for sumo wrestlers who are hungry from training.
- If dinner option is selected at checkout, the chanko hot pot dinner without drinks will be the default meal (please let us know if you would prefer vegetarian, or if you have any other special dietary requirements on the “Special Requirements” field at checkout. Please note that traditional chanko nabe broth is typically made with pork or chicken, but the restaurant may substitute the broth for those who prefer vegetarian option. Please understand that once we have accepted your dinner request, changes cannot be made one week before the tour date.
- There is no age requirement. Children must be accompanied by adult (18 or older). Adult pricing applies to all guests of any age, except infants and toddlers between age 1 and 3, which are free of charge, as long as they do not occupy a seat (infants must sit on parents’ laps).
- Before the tour, please notify us if you or someone in your group will be in a wheelchair. Please note that there is a wheelchair storage area on the first floor of the stadium; however, your seats will be on the second floor. Guests must be able to climb up the stairs on their own (or with the help from a family member) as staff from Ryogoku Kokugikan will not be able to assist guests.
- No outside food or drinks are allowed in the arena, but food is available for purchase from vendors within the arena.
- For Standard Tour (Join-in group option), the seats will be on the second floor B chair seats (from rows 7 to 11) or C chair seats. The tour will have a maximum of 20 people sitting in the same location with the English-speaking tour guide.
- The Grand Sumo Tournaments in Japan are held on fixed dates throughout the year. For 2026, the schedule is as follows:
- Tokyo Tournament 2026: Jan 11 - Jan 25 | May 10 – May 24 | Sep 13 – Sep 27
- Osaka Tournament 2026: March 8 – March 22
- Nagoya Tournament 2026: July 12 – July 26
- Fukuoka Tournament 2026: Nov 8 – Nov 22
- Please note that there may be a wait prior to seating, as we must wait for all sumo matches to end before entering. There may also be congestion at the Sumo Museum, in which the tour guide may ask guests to visit on their own since it would be difficult to walk around with a large group in a congested area.
- When do the sumo tournaments take place in Japan? The official basho (tournaments) take place six times a year at various locations with each tournament lasting 15 days (start date and end date both land on Sundays). The exact dates vary, but takes place on the same months each year: January Tournament (Tokyo), March Tournament (Osaka), May Tournament (Tokyo), July Tournament (Nagoya), September Tournament (Tokyo), and November Tournament (Fukuoka).
- How far in advance should I book? Preparing an event requires some time, especially if reservations for restaurants or other venues are required. We recommend making a reservation as early as possible. Ideally, it should be 3 months before your travel date, or 1 month before the travel date at the very least. We may not be able to arrange your event in time so your booking request may be cancelled and you will receive a full refund.
- Please also note that group tickets are released by the Sumo Association about 4 – 7 weeks before the tour date; if we are unable to obtain the tickets, we will notify guests within 4 weeks before the tour and will offer an alternative tour date or full refund.
- Using audio headsets, you’ll clearly be able to hear the expert guide explain the history and culture of sumo wrestling, as well as learn about some of the most famous sumo wrestlers throughout history and today in Japan. Enjoy the intense matches with explanations from your expert guide and cheer on your favorite sumo wrestlers along with dedicated local fans.
- The meeting point will be included in the tour details sent to your email at least one week before the tour date.
- Japan Awaits is a licensed tour operator in Japan, with hundreds of registered and vetted tour guides nationwide. We offer tours in any location in Japan and manage all details, including transportation and tickets. Visit Japan Awaits to learn more about our tours or inquire about a custom experience today.
- For Sumo Stable experience (during off-season of Sumo Tournament): Join the Sumo Stable Morning Practice Tour (during off-season of Sumo Tournament) at a sumo stable near Warabi Station (30 min. from Tokyo), in a join-in group (8 - 16 people). Watch sumo wrestlers train at an authentic stable while an expert guide shares insights via audio headsets and enjoy the chanko lunch after the session. Location is at the Sumo Stable near Warabi Station (30 min from Tokyo Station) from 8 AM - 12:00 PM. Please note that with this option, you will only visit a sumo training stable (with guide and headset) but you will not have a seat ticket for a sumo tournament, because this date is off-season and no tournaments are taking place on this date.

It’s a okay tour but essentially you’re just paying for the sumo ticket and a translator. The price of a regular sumo tickets is way cheaper than the cost of the tour. If you can’t get tickets direct from the tournament the this would be the next best option if you love sumo and willing to pay this price.

Shuji made us feel more than welcome coming to the arena and in the dinner. He was very informative and made sure that we knew the lore behind the wrestlers and the importance of their matches that day.

Our sumo tournament experience with Junko was fantastic!. She was delightful and incredibly knowledgeable, not just about sumo culture and traditions, but about many of the wrestlers themselves. Clearly a devoted sumo fan, she explained the rituals and techniques behind what we were watching, which made the entire experience so much richer.
The hot pot dinner afterwards was the perfect way to end the day. Highly recommend Junko for anyone wanting an authentic and informative sumo experience!

My husband and I tried to buy tickets for the final day of the Grand Sumo Tournament on our own, but they sold out within minutes. We ended up booking this experience for January 2026 with Japan Awaits, and we’re so glad we did.
Maya was our local guide, and she was fantastic. We met just before 2:00 pm and were able to watch all of the bouts in the top division, plus most of the division before it. Maya is clearly a knowledgeable sumo fan, and she brought helpful materials that made it easy to understand the rules, the rituals, and the wrestlers we were watching. Our seats were in one of the upper levels, but the view was still incredible. There were about 12 total people in our group.
A highlight was the earpiece audio, which allowed Maya to explain what was happening in real time, making the tournament much more meaningful for us as native English speakers. She also seamlessly spoke Japanese and English, and even chatted in Spanish with another couple in our group. Her knowledge of sumo culture and history, and her willingness to answer questions throughout, really enriched the experience.
After the tournament, we enjoyed a traditional chanko-nabe dinner with other guests, where Maya shared more context about sumo and Japan. I would absolutely book another tour with her, and I highly recommend this experience for anyone interested in attending a traditional sumo tournament.

Very fun experience. All the logistics worked out great, we rcvd an email with the meeting point info, met the guide there. He then gave us a short tour of the arena, and described all the action when we got to our seats to see the event.

Great! Very helpful and friendly staff, highly recommend for getting tickets as well, since you most likely won’t be able to buy it yourself as a tourist, because it sold out within 5 minutes on the official sumo website.

Miyko was a great Sumo guide - she shared so much history and explained the key techniques so as none of our family knew much about the sport it made it more fun.

This was so much fun and so informative. One of the best experiences I've had. I am so glad I did it. The tour guide was fantastic and so knowledgeable. The food was delicious!

"To be honest, the moment I finished making that non-refundable booking, I thought to myself: 'What a mistake, and at such a price!' What do I even know about sumo? And to waste a whole day on this during such a short trip to Tokyo... but oh, how wrong I was. It was wonderful!
Everything was perfect, from the precise directions on how to get there to the sumo meal at the restaurant afterwards. But the highlight was definitely the half-day spent with our guide, Hiro, watching the tournament. Who would have believed it could be so interesting and moving?
Hiro’s guidance played a central role—he provided deep insights directly into my ear throughout the matches, covering everything from history to rituals. The fascinating information about each competitor, along with eye-opening charts about the bouts, was incredible. This is no surprise, of course, when you have a guide who is so passionate about the field and clearly finds joy in sharing it with others. It really made me want to keep following the rest of the tournament. It was a truly Japanese experience that, while not cheap, was absolutely worth the investment.

Amazing experience. I think tickets are pretty difficult to get on your own because they sell out so fast, it’s more convenient to use an agent. Easy to our tour operator, entrance to the event was quick and easy, our guide Junka who is a huge sumo fan, explained everything that was going on to us over an earpiece. The event itself is unmissable; the sumo tournament was absolutely amazing. We got the seats on the upper level (they are more western style stadium seats); the ones on the lower level are a little cramped because you would be sitting on the floor on a pad in a small square area that holds 4 people per square. The view from up top is better anyway and there really isn’t a bad seat in the house. 10/10 experience, look forward to doing it again one day.

It was a great experience all round- good seats, interesting commentary, smooth organisation & a cultural experience at the Grand Sumo Tournament
David_M, Jan 2026
Great option for experiencing a sumo tournament- knowledgeable and friendly guide, tickets for tournaments otherwise very difficult to get for foreigners. We had a great time. You get to see all of the top division bouts (Makuuchi) and about half of the second division bouts (Juryo).

An unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Watching sumo wrestlers train up close was honestly one of the most fascinating things I did in Tokyo. No gimmicks, no performances, just raw power, discipline, and tradition unfolding right in front of you. The atmosphere inside the stable was intense but respectful, and you really feel how deeply rooted sumo is in Japanese culture.
Our guide, Shun, was excellent. He was extremely knowledgeable, respectful of the wrestlers and the space, and great at explaining what we were seeing without interrupting the training. Learning about the rituals, hierarchy, and daily life of the wrestlers added so much depth to the experience.
It’s early, it’s quiet, and it’s incredibly humbling. If you’re even remotely interested in Japanese culture, this is a must-do. I walked away with a whole new appreciation for sumo and the dedication behind it. Worth every cent and then some.
Highly recommend!

The guide was very professional and even provided receivers to use so we could hear here over the noise. She had a lot of material about sumo that was shared and spoke during the tournament describing certain features. I loved it! Good value!

Super experience attending and getting to know important part of Japanese culture. The guide talked us through the history of Suma and rules
AlanJoseph_C, Nov 2025
Our tour guide was very knowledgeable about Sumo and gave great insight into the various things happening during the match. He gave great information about the history of sumo and the tradition as it is today. He was very informative and was able to answer everyone's questions. It was a very enjoyable experience.

Great way to watch the sumo tournament, especially if you are not able to buy tickets on your own or if you want additional commentary. Our tour guide was Duke who was very informative. The first 30 minutes or so Duke gave us background on the stadium and sumo wrestling. After that we had plenty of free time to shop and buy drinks and food. Before each match Duke would provide additional commentary on the wrestlers’ style. We were given ear pieces to listen to commentary from our tour guide. The volume on the ear piece is very loud, even on the lowest volume. I suggest bringing an ear plug or loop so you can dampen the volume.
We went to the arena in Tokyo, which runs warm so dress lightly. The ice cream soft serve on the second floor was delicious!

Yumi was a fantastic guide. She knew so much about sumo and was able to answer all of our many questions and provide a helpful play-by-play of the bouts. She really went above and beyond - we are so grateful!

Well run tour introducing the unique experience of a sumo tournament.Tour guide Hiroshi was enthusiastic knowledgeanle and a likeable host
Pauline_M, Sep 2025
Izumi is a great guid, very knowledgeable and he has great knowledge and love for the Sumo wrestling. He explained about the history of Sumo wrestling and all the symbolic rituals. We had a wonderful time. Great atmosphere.
Julie_C, Sep 2025
We loved our experience. Our host ‘Hiro’ was an absolute gem - his commentary via ear-phone radio to everyone in the group was 100% positive and the knowledge made our experience so amazing. He is a sumo expert and clearly loved keeping us up to speed on every bout - it’s so quick you need someone telling you who has form, how old they are, where they are in the rankings… Hiro was a gentle voice of commentary we didn’t know we needed! In fact we saw other groups leave the stadium early as their guide was no where to be seen or heard! We also added the meal after to our experience and it was perfect…. HIRO joined us and made sure all various vegan/fish/meat options were sorted for the whole party… again he was fabulous.

We had a fantastic day watching the sumo wrestling match. Taku, our guide, had exceptional knowledge of the sport & was really passionate which made it so much more enjoyable for those of us that was in his group. We had great seating & to have a guide to explain sumo made a world of difference to our experience. Would thoroughly recommend.
Philippa_M, Sep 2025
This was a fabulous experience and Taka was a professional and informative guide. Made all the difference. Would really recommend

We were thankful to get tickets to the tournament. However, we had hoped to learn more about the sport, the tournament traditions and all the aspects of the competition. Our tour guide showed us to our seats and gave us some basic information. However, he did not explain most of what we were seeing and hearing in the ring and in the arena. Disappointing.
Response from Host, Dec 2025
Dear Lisa-san,
Thank you very much for joining our Sumo Tournament Experience in Tokyo and for taking the time to share your thoughts. We appreciate hearing your perspective, and we are glad to know you enjoyed the tournament itself.
Regarding your comment about the guiding and explanations, we would like to offer some clarity. The tour is structured to enrich the cultural experience through live commentary from a knowledgeable guide, use of a Banzuke ranking chart, and audio headsets to ensure clear information inside the busy stadium. These elements are designed to help guests understand the history, rituals, and structure of the matches while still being able to enjoy the event at their own pace.
Seizo-san is one of our most experienced guides and is committed to providing the best possible experience to each and every guest. We understand that the style of explanation may not have fully matched what you were hoping for on this occasion, and your feedback has been shared internally as part of our continued review of tour content and delivery.
Thank you again for taking the time to share your impressions of the tour. We take all guest feedback seriously, and your comments support our ongoing effort to refine and enhance the experience for future visitors. Our team remains dedicated to providing the highest quality experience for all guests who join us.
Warm regards,
Regina | Japan Awaits

Amazing experience! Watching the sumo matches up close was unforgettable, and our guide Seizo made it even better with clear, knowledgeable explanations about the history and traditions. Highly recommend this tour!

The tour guide, Izumi, gave clear instructions on where to meet outside the stadium. He gave insightful information about the different wrestlers and Sumo culture. He answered all of our questions and made the experience really enjoyable.
tara_m, Jul 2025
My mum and I were lucky enough to have witnessed the final day of the May sumo tournaments. Our guide Shunsuke, was an incredible guide who provided us with an extensive and rich history of the sumo sport and its cultural and spiritual significance. He was a very friendly, sweet and knowledgable guide who clearly has an a real love for the sport. We were provided with many opportunities (skipping lines, fantastic seats, meet and greets!) during the activity. After the tournament we were privileged enough to eat at a sumo restaurant eating dishes they consume (even the quantity!). This was easily my favourite activity I done in Japan, and recommend it highly to others. Thank you Shunsuke Moriyama - San for a wonderful day!!!
David_C, Jun 2025
Complete rip off!!! Photo’s are a complete lie and are completely different than the actual experience. On top of all that they switch locations on you and it has nothing to do with the actual stadium. I’m disgusted I lost over 500 usd for an experience that was completely false. The sickening part of all this are all the bad reviews somehow don’t get published.
Bernard_L, Jun 2025
Tak-san was very passionate and informative about the details of the sport of sumo. The tournament was lively and very exciting!
