Would highly recommend this tour. We were a bit worried about the ethics of favela tours, and several of the providers we found didn't put us at ease: it looked as if you would show up in a huge bus and be shuttled around to gape at various sights.
We wanted something more laid back and in touch with the locals, and this is exactly what Gilson provides. It was just me and my partner on the tour, and we essentially went on a walk through the town. Gilson knows pretty much everyone, and you really feel like you're getting an insider's perspective.
The tour is more about getting a feel for the place and less about the "sights", but such as they are they include: the funicular railway, UPP station, football pitch, Gilson's house and clock collection (!), town square and church.
Gilson is super knowledgeable, having lived in Santa Marta his whole life. Instead of giving a prepared spiel, at each point he gives a brief explanation and then lets you ask questions, which he's always able to answer. We preferred this approach.
If you want a chill experience that really lets you feel like you're participating in the life of the favela, then highly recommend this tour.

Top! The Guide made us feel the life of the favela, the organisation and the culture! The food was delicious and very friendly!

We felt safe with our guide. The view was spectacular from the top. Expect to look down as you’re going down the stairs as there is poops from the cats and the dogs here and there.

I'm glad you felt safe! We always work to break this paradigm that exists in relation to the favelas of Rio! I was born and raised in the Santa Marta favela and we always seek to work towards improving the quality of life of the favela's residents and also of our visitors. Thank you for your visit! We have several mobilization and awareness-raising projects about regular garbage disposal, collecting coconuts on the hill, so much so that we have several plastic bottles with bags spread around the hill with the aim of keeping the favela organized and clean! If you thought it was dirty, believe me, it was much worse. Thanks to our community work, we are gradually reaping positive results from our cleaning campaign through our social and community tourism.

Gilson is an amazing guy, very emphatic and genuine.
Walking through the favela with him, you get the impression that he knows everyone and that everyone loves him.
The biggest proof of his love for the community is that he directs all of his energy into sharing and caring about his people.
The terrace of his house has the best views of the favela and the city. No fancy place on Copacabana can beat the views you get here and I have to say that I felt safer than in some central parts of Rio.
Thank you Gilson for showing us everyday life in your community and helping us to understand it better. I would love to come back one day.
Just like MJ sings in his song:
"Don't worry what people say, we know the truth"
Love❤️

Got to see Gilson’s family’s awesome clock collection as well as meet some of his friends and family. Even got to celebrate his grandmother’s 88th birthday. The family really welcomed us and made us feel a part of their family, even though is was a brief encounter.

Gilson was a fantastic tour guide. He was honest about living in a favela highlighting the sense of community but also listing its challenges. He was proud to show us Favela Santa Marta and introduce us to his family. It was a bit confusing finding the correct tour guide when meeting in the park (as there were several). We would have felt more secure with a larger group (it was just the two of us women) and we witnessed weapons present by residents at times during the tour. The tour price could have been a bit less.

I learned alot about the culture and history of the place. The challenges that the people face everyday. I'm thankful for my guide

Very original experience, more than just a tour. Gilson took us around his own neighborhood introducing us to his family and even describing to us the short history of favela santa marta and other inner rio favelas.

The tour turned into unique experience - we took a ride on a funicular, I had a chance to enter an apartment in favela (it was amazing). I had a wonderful time, Gilson is a very nice guy who represents his favela with love and enthusiasm - it was touching to hear about English language school for children he is building and see the work being done.
Locals get the best view of Christ the Redeemer, it’s fascinating.
It’s a perfect tour for having a look at life in favela without feeling scared which is very important.

Our guide Ronny was a very friendly man who lives in the Favella. He showed us around and gave us a lot informations throughout our walk where we saw e.g. a statue of Michael Jackson
Ronny brought us to Gilson Fumaça, a very nice elderly lady who owns approximately 350 watches - all are presents from various tourists - in her house in which she gladly invited us to see her „treasures“. People who live there were greeting us friendly as we passed by.
It was a great experience which we do not want to miss.
Thanks Rob & Karin

Thank you for your visit! This way we can show our Favela as it really is, and manage to maintain our cultural and social projects for children and young people from where we live. gratitude.

Want to see the real authentic side of Rio? Do this tour. We felt safe and it was such an amazing experience. Our tour guide lived in the favala and we was a perfect guide. It was my favorite thing to see in RIO.

Personal experience, gilson knows everyone and loves him. you visit some homes, great fabela to visit.
anna_c, Mar 2023
500 steep stone steps, going down , no railings
Tour guy late 45 minutes, cable car not operating (from a long time)
No notice about the physical difficulties about this excursion
Knees in danger
Response from Host, Mar 2023
Well unfortunately or fortunately this is our way of life, the inclined plane (cable car) thank God a part that takes from the lower part to the middle of the hill is undergoing renovation, after 15 years of operation, I did what we managed to do that it was paying for a car and taking them to the top of the hill and then walking down, this was the only option for you to know a little about our reality, our MIchael Jackson space and the house of Dona Maria Helena who collects watches, unfortunately this and the day to day of all 6,000 people who live here, every day we go up and down all these steps just to be able to access the basic things in life, like going to work, going to school, supermarket, doctors and etc... WE'RE SORRY FROM THE HEART WE ARE WORKING SO THAT CASES LIKE THESE DO NOT REPEAT. AND KNOW THAT DESPITE THE EVENTS, YOUR VISIT CONTRIBUTES TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF OUR COMMUNITY AND OUR CULTURAL AND SOCIAL PROJECTS. THANK YOU SORRY.

This tour was amazing! My husband and I learned so much about the Santa Marta Favelas and the over 60,000 residents that occupy them. The 2 bedroom favelas are surprisingly spacious. The homes have a nice size living room, kitchen, bathroom and bedrooms. Our guide allowed us to tour is mom's favela. She owned over 350 clocks of all kinds from all over the world!!! It was an amazing site! The favelas are all equipped with electricity and running water! Santa Marta has tons of barbershops, hair and nail salons, bars, shops and restaurants. There are 3 police stations, 1 government facility and a couple churches. Overall, it was absolutely amazing experiencing life in the favelas. I would DEFINITELY recommend this tour to EVERYONE!

I went with a friend to visit Santa Marta and Gilson was our guide, we were only 3 people and he explained everything in detail. He gave us a wonderful and respectful tour around the favela. Gilson is 100% recommended

It was a very informative and fun experience experience. It was an eye opener. I enjoyed seeing art work on some of the buildings. The people there are very kind. They have the own community there with post office, stores, and a little restaurant.
Response from Host, Feb 2023
We really appreciate your visit because this way we can show our favela how we really live, your visit directly contributes to the development of our social projects, as part of the amount paid we invest directly in these activities. Thank you very much!

Unique experience in the favela with the guide who accompanied us safely in the heart of the Santa Marta district showing the various aspects and panoramic views of the City. We did all the climb on foot because there was no electricity and then the "inclined plane" nn worked. I can say that it was even better because it allowed us to fully live the experience. The children of the district improvised a folklore show taking up the typical feast of San Sebastiano which was a real joy to see. We were able to take some pictures discreetly and without creating disturbance to the inhabitants of the neighborhood. RECOMMENDED

Dommage...
Response from Host, Mar 2025

Unsere beiden Guides waren hervorragend..
